At the time this came out I was married to a TV News Producer so I was well immersed in the business. We both about pissed ourselves when the native gets the "this just in sticks" and turns to camera 2. GOLD!!
Every time I watch this movie I catch something else. The last time is the first time I noticed the sign on the newsstand that said "whacking material." I'm sure there are a few more that I've missed.
Good catch! A lot of the gags in this movie were comedy takes on commercials and TV shows of the time so may be lost on younger viewers, but there is still plenty to laugh at like "Get me Hamm on five and hold the Mayo".
Where's the one with the Soviet newscaster delivering the news with a gun pointed at his head? Or is that in the sequel? Edit: yep. It's in the sequel.
There's a Woody Woodpecker cartoon where Woody is mistaken for a Martian, it becomes global news, and there's a "newscaster montage" like this, including an African beating drums into a microphone.
Movies such Aeroplane part 1 and 2, and Top Secret were beyond far away from that time.. That was humor and funny . Not bullshit movies such as scary movie etc.
