In this short video, I will show you a super simple exercise to release your neck and shoulder tension in just 30 seconds. And this does not involve stretching or massage.
Here's a shorter version of this video (90 seconds): • AMAZING Neck & Shoulde...
After you try this exercise and feel a change, I explain why your shoulder and neck muscles keep getting tight and you are having to keep stretching and massaging all the time, then I explain why this simple exercise can release your shoulder and neck tension so quickly without stretching. This is very important to understand.
As for how many reps, sets, how many times/day, whether you should do just one side or both sides, here's my recommendation/suggestion:
- You can do this awareness exercise on whichever side you feel tension, but there is no harm in doing on both sides.
- Reps, sets are not very important. Your attention to your body and moving slowly are more important. You can do this exercise as many times as you would like as it can remind you and your nervous system of your habitual tension. I personally find it very helpful to do this exercise while driving and doing desk work as these daily activities are often associated with increased muscular tension in neck and shoulders.
When you start connecting with YOUR BODY and move slowly and pay attention to your body, you will start to understand YOUR BODY and optimal movement and posture for YOUR BODY from the inside out, in a way no one can understand. YOUR BODY only belongs to YOU. Only you can access your internal resources that is AWARENESS!
Timestamps:
0:37 Test before exercise
0:58 Exercise
2:04 Test after exercise
2:19 Explanation of why neck and shoulder tension released quickly without stretching
3:02 Explanation of why stretching effects don't last long
This exercise demonstrates how our body and brain communicate with each other, and how you bring your attention to your body can alter the state of the nervous system and body. You can see how small and slow and mindful movement can make a big difference. This is why I focus on retraining movement patterns and nervous system using mindful movement to improve our functions and quality of life!

Here's is something very important I want you to know. Our culture (modernized culture, mostly Western culture) trains us to be disconnected from our bodies. Our culture trains us to view our bodies as external objects as an outside observer. Our culture trains to look to outside experts to fix us, fix our body issues but doesn't train us to connect with our own body, own sensory experience, "listen" to our body, feel our body, and learn from our inner intelligence. This is cultural influence on our beliefs influences our behaviors. Many people believe that they need more information in order to overcome their limitations and challenges. Many believe that they just haven't found the "right" information yet so keep seeking outside for their answer. Reality is that we have too much information, and we are so disconnected from our own body and experience. It's easy to view my videos as another exercise video, and approach it from that mindset, that is to approach your body like fixing mechanical parts that lie external to you. Then, you are really missing the point. This is not a conventional way of thinking in Western culture, so it's easy to let my message pass through you. But, don't worry! I am persistent and will repeat over and over and over:) I'm not here to teach you exercises to correct your body structures. I am here to help you connect with YOUR BODY, YOUR SENSORY EXPERIENCE, learn from YOUR BODY, and create a new way of movng, using yourself, being in your body! This paradigm shift is necessary for transformation, changes in your nervous system, movement patterns, quality of life because your body and mind are one! I really encourage you to keep this message in your mind as you watch my videos and practice movement!

Such a beautiful distinction. We live in a society that is so obsessed with doing everything and doing it perfectly. We always have to doubt ourselves and our ability to do something. Being so obsessed with this makes listening to the soul, body, and even mind impossible. It's the same reason awareness and eastern traditions are making a boom in the western world. Our entire healthcare system is built on creating band-aids for issues as opposed to addressing _why there is even an issue to begin with._ Thanks for your help! I love these awareness based exercises. Super helpful in general but especially at the piano where you've unintentionally taught me to be more aware of when my technique fails me and to not ignore the pain that arises subsequently.

I have been praying for relief from a fainting spell that I banged my head and my neck suffered more damage than my lump on my head that was bleeding. Over 3 weeks ago this happened and just recently I heard God say, lower your shoulders, lower, relax, lower your shoulders. Now I bump into your video and I said, I know God sent me this video... I'm going to watch it. I know God just gave me this video on RU-vid and I'm going to watch you, and you are explaining a better way to lower my shoulder just like God was trying to tell me to lower it. Life changing!! Over the years I have been to an osteopath, physio, a massage therapist, yoga and anything else that I could think of with very minimal long term results. Been doing this a few weeks once a day or more if I am stressed and it’s so much better. Amazing, thank you. We carry so much stress and tension in our shoulders and it’s only now that I realise that my posture has not been normal for years due to stress and I had no idea of the physical impacts it was having on my body until I done this.

It's basically deprogramming your neurology to stand down, as habits are repeated from our unconscious minds, that's why we're not aware of them & reprogramming to create a healthier conscious habit, which in turn becomes second nature. It's a very clever self awareness, we really can heal ourselves. Thank you for pointing this out, people like you are true healers x

I'd like to add that I've noticed with myself and my clients that the areas that we feel chronic pain and tightness are the areas that are having to hold position in an elongated position. For a common holding pattern in those that carry a lot of stress in their shoulders and neck and/or those that sit at desks for long periods an example would be the muscles that have the action of pulling the scapula down and towards the spine (Rhomboids, mid/lower traps). The areas that are actually shortened and winning "the tug of war" are typically not the ones that hurt. An example that would be antagonist to the muscles just mentioned might be muscles that, when shortened, protect our anterior neck and chest such as pec major (and minor), anterior deltoids etc. This would also just as importantly include the corresponding fascia. This is a very technical and anatomical way of looking at it but it's helped me understand what type of work should be done where for each client. I love your videos Taro:)

I hold a lot of tension in my shoulders and I've had neck pain and a headache for the last 2 weeks. This was 100% perfect for me. I genuinely thank you!

I was wondering - how are you doing now? Do you experience less tension over this period of time? Asking for a friend ;)

Great reminder to the body, thank you! The concept ‘clicked’ when I realised it’s similar to relaxing the body (such as in meditation) by first tensing a body part and then releasing it. Much more effective then simply telling yourself to relax your body.

Very helpful, whilst doing this, it dawned on me that this is a mindful focussing of attention, and then you affirmed this awareness by explaining just that. Many thanks for these gently educational videos!

So you call a 6 min. video for a 30 sec. exercise getting "right to the point"?
@gipi23
@gipi23 Год назад
@@RackwitzG my thought exactly...it is like somebody calls you, offering sth, and they say 'can I borrow just 30s if your time?'. 6minutes ain't 30seconds. Mind you, he never claimed the video would last 30s ;-) But hell yea, beating about it doesn't help.
@RackwitzG
@RackwitzG Год назад
@@gipi23 Others would have made it 9 or more mins, so he was rather brief. He needs to explain what he is doing too.

Wow this helped so much! I did both shoulders. I will have to do it again later because the tension isn't completely gone, but for only 6 minutes, this method is definitely worth trying!
