Airplanes clip wings at Chicago O'Hare Airport. REAL ATC

Be advised, position of the airplanes in the video may not be accurate
On January 15, 2024.
All Nippon Airways Boeing 777-300 performing flight ANA11 from O'Hare International Airport (KORD) to Narita International Airport (RJAA) was taxiing for departure around 6:30 p.m. when its left wing hit the stabilizer of Delta Air Lines Boeing 717 Flight DAL2122. Upon returning back to the ramp for aircraft inspection, indications of scrapes were visible on the wingtip,
and ANA is currently evaluating the details.

I was on the ANA flight. Can confirm that the pilot did not speak English well, but he definitely made sure we were safe. Passengers were all super nice, as well as staff. Even though our flight had been delayed over six hours, and then delayed another day, im glad everyone was safe. Getting to evacuate using the stairs was cool, and seeing the large Eevee jet in it’s glory in literal blood freezing cold is an experience I’ll never forget.

Kudos to the ATC controllers to speak slowly and clear to an foreign pilot. ORD is famous to speak fast and not always clear enough for non-English speaking pilots to understand.

Agreed, although in Japan they use English even within Japan, so the pilots are probably used to getting English instructions already.

A number of news outlets made a big deal that both planes were made by Boeing. Don't get me wrong, Boeing is having a bad year of design and manufacturing cost-cutting decisions coming home to roost, but I would be profoundly surprised to find the manufacturer at fault for a wing strike during taxi.

News outlets these days are interested purely on clicks and far less on balanced and fair reporting. Not surprising they pushed the fact that they were Boeing planes despite that being a nothingburger Me I was more interested in it being a 717 involved, haven’t seen one in a while

The 777 is one of the best planes you can get from Boeing. They took no shortcuts and everything was rigorously tested. PBS made an episodic documentary on them from start to finish.

Good catch by the controller that the readback was “november” not “hold short of november”, small thing but so important to get right especially when the pilots are doing their best with english

Position of DAL2122 is definitely not accurate. Terminal 1 Concourse C is United only. Delta now parks in Terminal 5, Gates M2-M11. DAL2122 pushed off Gate M6 on the day of the event.

I won't call it a hit and run as being a pilot in the cockpit especially of the size of the 777, it would be difficult to know if the aircraft wingtip hit an object such as another aircraft. This is an accident.

Me thinks Ground Control owns the collision as Ground not only revised taxi clearence multiple times but was responsible the taxiways were clear and safe for aircraft movement. Pilots cannot see the wings of their passenger jet aircraft from the cockpit. The rely on tracking runway and taxiway markings to assure wing tip clearance and Ground controllers for separation at intersecting taxiways.

Delta used to make fun of Valujet and their ancient DC-9 fleet. Valujet then became the first airline to place an order for the new 717 but became part of AirTran after their flight 592 disaster. AirTran was then acquired by Southwest who only flies the 737. Hence, the entire fleet of 717s was leased to ... Delta.

When I flew 777s we were not allowed to do single engine taxis because of excessive uneven tire wear.

That’s an incorrect location for the Delta B717. Those are United gates in the C Concourse. Delta parks at the M Gates at Terminal 5 (Int’l Concourse) east of the Bravo taxiway by taxiways A21 and A20.

Isn’t that the C concourse, where Delta was parked? By this animation, the DL 717 was parked at C27 or C25. I also thought it was odd for ANA to be up around the B concourse. I would think they would park at the INTL concourse (M gates) on the East side, North of taxiway V.

ANA parks at T5 international for arrivals. The airplane then gets towed over to the United gates at B for departures (Star Alliance). Delta parks at T5 at the NW corner (believe gates are M1-M5). The graphic is incorrect since C concourse is all United. The contact between the planes was over by T5 as ANA was taxiing on B close to those Delta gates. It’s tight for a WB acft to pass if an aircraft is pushing back in a certain way or waiting to pull in to the gates there.

The 777 models are the largest of passenger planes with very long wings with a 200 ft wingspan, the plane was on the center line and it still hit the smaller Boeing 717 Delta So that Delta was sticking way out there, why didn't the ground crew notice that ???? Like cruising a 18-wheeler in a truck stop, some idiots park on the corners sticking way out daring you to hit them.

It's not only the aircraft's weight but physical size and the vortex wake it leaves behind. Many reasons the controllers need to know its category

Can confirm that the cabin was themed playing Pokémon music, and there were pikachu mats on the headrests. Some kids next to me got a cool gift bag with some keychains and stuff. I’m pretty sure there was an Eevee plushie at the front when boarding, too

I speak English and am a GA pilot but I give kudos to foreign pilots who are able to learn English in order to fly globally . Saying that, there are many whose poor command of the English language makes them a liability in the cockpit ( or wherever PC term is used now )

If that's not entitlement, what is? In any case: 1) language appears to play no role in incident, and readback quality was good with exception of "hold short" 2) only practical solution is for ATC to work harder at meeting foreign pilots halfway and compensate for their lack of fluency

Chicago controllers.. Especially ground are notorious for being fast, curt and rude. FAA should look into it... But of course they'll do no such thing.. They transfered oversight to Chicago controllers😂
