oh this era of disaster flicks was just classic. Airport 77 is a fun one, created a bunch of classic tropes. Weird aside, my aunt actually worked on The Towering Inferno as a prop master and continuity checker :-)

The combination of Christopher Lee and the underwater setting reminds of a genuine TV movie that thrilled and haunted my childhood, "Goliath Awaits," about a liner sunk in 1939 that's found to have survivors living on into the early 1980s.

I think this movie had an actual influence on a future movie: The famously reviled 21st-century disaster movie The Core. The premise of the plane's construction, design, and composition in this movie is as absurd as pretty much all of the science in The Core, but the general concept is essentially the same: A group of people who only slightly know each other are trapped in an enclosed metal container, everything outside will kill them instantly, and the walls won't hold forever. The difference, besides how they got there, was that The Core traded off having fewer interesting set pieces to look at for having a more reasonable number of characters to follow.

Thanks for reading my comment and expounding, Matt! Agree to disagree. I can understand the idea that there's a ton going on that can feel like too much. Riley may have been stretching himself too thin overall. Oddly, that's my criticism of "Us." Fantastic movie overall, but some real problems toward the end in my opinion (some discrepancies that make suspension of belief super difficult). My rebuttal on STBY would be that just about everything you see is connected to the main ideas. The "rap show" parody, for example, is related both to the racial stuff and the capitalism stuff. The expectations that some (generally music producers and some white folks) have of what rap is, what it says. The bizarre obsession with rap that says nothing and is full of expletives (something Boots Riley, a rapper with a message, would know a lot about). Nonsensical rap that one can bop to sells better than rap that tries to get you to think. The parodies of art galleries/shows and sign spinning add to the way capitalism will dress anything up to make it appealing, including slavery. It's a movie full of references in the way an Edgar Wright movie is, but they're social references instead of pop culture ones. Those are complex concepts, and it looks like for many folks this style of presenting them was just too much and too crazily done.

@Arosukir6

@@MrSandpaperCondom Thanks very much! 😁 It means something at least. It's okay to disagree too. Film is awesome because of the many ways it can be understood. As long as someone is able to explain why they feel the way they do, and as long as they're not inaccurate (like "I didn't like it because blah happened," when that wasn't even how it happened), their analysis is valid. I do love debating though.

Craig's joke about not starting with the beginning of the series made me think about dead horse franchises. You know, your Die Hards. Your Mission Impossibles. Your Fast and the Furiouses. Movies that keep getting made even though no one is really asking for them. Is there any movie that is the fourth in the series or later that you'd like to talk about? Otherwise, it would be a fun niche to cover on the show.

@@blamesocietyfilms panning is basically the spread of the vocals. how when one talks, the playback is mostly in one speaker. it's an audio tool used to make things sound more on the left or right side, maybe the mic is set up to have a wide stereo width, converting the file from stereo to mono might help, but make sure to turn down the volume a little first, or it will bounce too loud.
