once when I was 13 I was flying to New Mexico alone. They messed up my flight so I freaked out a bit, and started crying so they let me sit in 1st class free. Moral of the story.... cry.

tips I have heard is when you are going through security; you should do this 1. go to the left one - since most people are right handed we go to the right side 2. avoid queues with babies - their parent(s) most likely will be bringing formula and it will have to be checked. 3. queue where it seems to be more business people i.e wearing suits - they are more used to going through security and the line may move faster

travel hacks 1) check in inline 2) choose a seat close to the front of the plane 3) if you order a special meal to get food first. you will have to miss a certain food group 4) pack snacks 5) dont buy a black bag 6) take a picture of your bag 7) 4 wheeled suitcases are always better than 2 wheeled suitcases 8) bring an empty water bottle 9) dress in layers to take of or put on clothes if needed 10) dont get angry if something bad happens, get sad 11) get lounge access 12) sit outside of a lounge for free wifi 13) you never need to be at an airport 3 hrs early ( unless it is an huge ,busy and international airport ) 14) if you are late for a flight then tell somebody 15) ask your fellow travellers if you can go in front of them in the line 16) dont be scared to ask airline staff for anything you need

For me, I'd rather go to the airport 3 hours ahead (or 3.5 - 4 hours ahead if it's a busy airport) just to make allowances for if something happens when I'm traveling to the airport and other unexpected things that may not allow me to board quickly. (eg traffic jams/someone in front of the line being a jerk to the airline counter staff/security/etc) If nothing happens and if I still have time, I'd usually kill time by walking around after I've checked in and cleared customs and exploring the place-perhaps even getting a bite to eat or a souvenir. (and of course, visiting the toilets) I'd only start heading towards the boarding lounge about an hour to 45 mins (this may take about half an hour at most but I'd like to make an allowance for if I get lost or something) for my flight. I dunno man... I'm probably the kind of weirdo who believes that even the airport in itself is kind of a tourist attraction...

These were some great tips, and I work as a Gate agent for a major airline at the airport. Believe me, we see a LOT of crazy stuff through-out our day, so I'll share a few of my "hacks". 1. Repeating what she said, but being nice to the airport agents during a delay/cancellation will make a world of difference. During these irregular operations we prepare for yelling & lots of angry people. So imagine our surprise when a friendly face walks up & says "I know you guys hate it when the flights delay. It's not your fault the weather is bad/mechanial occured...etc." We LOVE this! And...we have a LOT of power regarding what we can & can not do. Now, with this being said, the majority of us are on your side, so we want to help you in every way we can. BUT, this does not mean we can/will bump you to first class, give you several hundereds of dollers in vouchers, etc because you shed some tears. We have limits, but we can do quite a bit, so instead of demanding first class or vouchers, be kind & patient & usually the agent will offer them. Also, when a delay/cancellation occurs, use the airline app to LOOK at alternate options, The app can rebook you, but it can't give you any compensation like an agent can, and sometimes, doesn't come up with the best/quickest option for you. Most gate agents will allow passengers to line up during a delay. If you have a good gate agent, they will likely make an announcement for you to stay seated & allow him/her to work through the connections. This givses the agent the ability to book a passenger that is going to (insert city) on a flight that is leaving shortly, where they would have most likely missed that opportunity if they were waiting in a long line. Also, have a few alternate airports for the agent to look at. This can come in handy if it is a small city with a limited number of flights per day. We will often give ground transportation to your destination depending on the number of milage.2. I usually recommend getting to the airport 2+ hours prior to your flight time. You can never predict traffic/long lines at TSA, problems with check-in, etc. The more time you allow yourself, the less stressed you will be. Also, getting to the airport sometimes gives you an opportunity to get on an earlier flight. I work in a small airport & often try to move folks who are there to get them to their connecting city a little earlier just in case something goes wrong. Even on good weather days, we can never predict a mechanical cancellation or oversell, so we like to help us by helping you on to the earlier flight (usually free of charge!).3. If you are a frequent traveler, get to know the agents that work for the airline you travel on most. I see some people every week when they are flying out. They stop by & chat (if I'm not too busy) and most I know by name. This can help on days during irregular opperations, I have called/emailed some of my frequent travellers to advise them of a delay & rebooking options even before they've gotten to the airport. Hope some of these help!

Actually I think the cutting in line, or telling airport staff you're late, is for connecting flights esp if you're going from a domestic flight to an international flight & you need extra time for customs, etc
@Dujenny

Or international to domestic. Our flight was delayed because the gate wasn’t ready and our two-three hour layover we were supposed to have quickly became we had to cut in security line, try to speed through customs, and run to catch our flight.

I'm loving Australia at the mo'! Sydney to Melbourne, busiest airline route on Earth. You need to be checked in 30 minutes before your flight, then walk through security to your gate. Personalising your suitcase is the best advice. Fluoro tag, spray paint- whatever. One courtesy I find lacking at airports is luggage collection. Don't stand and wait beside the conveyer belt. It makes it hard for people to quickly grab their bag and haul it off. If everyone is two steps back they all can step forward to get their things without needing others to step aside.

Don't try and sympathize with airline staff. Just be real, tell us what's going on and done. I don't want to hear/see you cry. Also ticket counter and gate agents can do the exact same thing. Also if you're late...TSA does not care if you're late. If you're in a big city...plan to be to the airport 3 hours ahead of time. Back to airline explanations...Bringing a manager out or lead will only be them explains what the agent just told you in dummy terms. Basically don't be annoying entitled or terrible. We will want to help you and possibly go the extra mile. DONT ACT ENTITLED

Great advice ! I have worked at several airports for over 10 years and this is all true . Please don't be afraid to ask airport employees for assistance as we know all the shortcuts and ( VERY IMPORTANT !! ) if we can't help you will most likely know someone who can. But if you find yourself in a trying situation ( delays, flight canceled, running late, airline fees ), do not take your frustration out on us as it will lead you nowhere.

Just a heads up - you said that spinner (4 wheel) suitcases were ALWAYS better than an upright (2 wheel) suitcase. That is not entirely true. Spinners are best for flat surfaces such as airports and hotels. But if you are traveling on cobblestones or rocks you want an upright. Why? because a spinner will get caught in the grooves of the rocks and cobblestones where the uprights will bounce across them. So choose your wheels based on how often you will deal with rough surfaces. Spinners will have to be carried over the rough surfaces and if you overpacked that could be a lot to lift.

If you book with an online company like Travelosity or Orbitz, ALWAYS go to the airline's website afterwards to reserve your seat because the online company sometimes fails to transmit that info to the airline.

Hey Nadine, Thanks for the tips and tricks. Like you, I always carry an empty water bottle through security. Here's a related tip: The night before I travel, I freeze a water bottle half full of water. This is allowable through security, since it is not a liquid or gel. Of course, if any of the ice has melted, I drink it before going through security. Once through security, I fill the bottle at the water fountain and then have ice cold water for several hours. I carry the empty water bottle also for three reasons: 1) in case my ice was ever confiscated (and I think it was confiscated once when returning to the U.S. from overseas, but never through domestic security, as they know ice is allowable), 2) to have some extra water on the flight, as some domestic carriers (e.g., Allegiant) don't provide any free drinks (not even water) on the flight, 3) to have some water when I arrive (as some of the countries I've traveled to don't have water fountains with safe drinking water at their airports).

I usually fly business class these days unless it's something like an hour and half flight. By going business on long haul flights one gets the benefit of lounge access, which also has showers, plenty snacks, meals, cakes and pastries laid out as well as premium alcoholic drinks and champagne! up to date magazines news papers and tv - usually they are tunes to the news channels. The reception staff also let you know when your flight is boarding. One also gets priority boarding, once seated your offered something to drink, like fruit juice or champagne before take off! One also gets a separate checkin desk and priority fast track through departures. For the past several years we (my husband ) have been flying long haul from Scotland to family in San Francisco and Melbourne sometimes doing it all as part of a round the world trip. When there are several refuelling stops or changing planes again there is the lounge access which really helps if your feeling in need of a shower to freshen up. The lounge access is for which ever airline we are travelling on, Emirates are the best lounges and staff. These lounges are different to the ones you can pay to have access to, these tend to be quite basic and only really let you spend around 2 hours in them! I also don't recall any having shower access either. Once you get to boarding your flight you can ask if there is any chance of an upgrade? This has worked for me in the past. As Nadine said always be polite with staff never loose your temper or take your frustration out on them. Just ask yourself if someone shouted at you - would you go out of your way to help ? the answer I'm sure is NO. One of the best travel tips I can give is invest in a pair of compression knee high socks as they will help not only to prevent a DVT but swelling ankles and lower legs. If you've ever been in hospital and had surgery you ay of been given a pair of anti-embolic stockings to wear for your surgery, if you were permitted to keep them use these during your flight. If you do find your on a long haul flight and don't have any of these sock types and your feet and ankles are swelling up, get up and walk about a bit, use the toilet, sit on the toilet lid and put your feet up on the door making sure your feet are above hip level, sit like this for a few minutes but only do this when there isn't a line of people waiting for the toilets. Certain countries will ask you to declare things your taking into their country. For example Australia will want to know about any food your taking into the country, tell the truth, you may be given the all clear to keep it. Don't lie as it can cause you a large financial find and or possibly denied access into the country.

I used to be a travel agent and one idea (or hack) that I have is instead of bringing your bag to the airport and struggling with it all the way. Get a Fed Ex account and 1 day prior to your trip call Fed Ex to pick up your luggage and have them deliver them to your final destination (the destination where you are going after arriving at the airport)(eg. hotel, your family's house, youth hostel,etc) and prepare a tote bag with gym attire like sweats etc and another bag with snacks so during the flight you can nibble on whatever you desire. When you arrive at the airport the next day after you sent your luggage-you will go through security like butter cause you don't have any luggage weighing you down and when you arrive at your destination all you have to do is if your airport and your hotel/family's home/youth hostel have a transit line taking you there, then take it and you won't be laden with luggage. By the time you arrive at your destination (hotel/family's home/youth hostel) your luggage should be waiting for you there and the only weight lifting you will do on this trip is bringing your waiting luggage to your room within the building so you don't need to bother with sidewalks and any outside problems (hills/etc). In a hotel, the staff could possibly have your luggage in your predetermined room ready and maybe if you're going to stay at a posh hotel with butlers-they could be instructed to unpack your luggage in your predetermined room. When you check in the front desk would give you your key card and tell you where your room is and low and behold after you open your door all your stuff will be hung up and folded in your drawers-with this HACK your vacation begins immediately as you wouldn't be spending the time unpacking. Now when you return home, you just do the opposite and again if you are in a posh hotel with butler service, have your butler launder all your used clothes and have them pack you luggage a day prior to your departure and call Fed Ex to pick up your luggage and instruct them where in your home they should leave them- again when you arrive at your home airport all you have to concern yourself is transportation getting home. When you arrive back home your luggage is waiting for you and you can open your luggage and all your clothes will be clean and neat and you wouldn't need to do any laundry. I got this idea when I worked at the California Mart in Downtown Los Angeles (the west coast fashion wholesale building). The wholesalers would Fed Ex their baggage a day prior to going to their different shows and they just bill Fed Ex using their accounts and this saves them the aggravation of luggage at the airport. With this idea you leave the airplane and airport fairly quickly since you don't have a huge luggage to deal with.

Whenever I travel, I have a cabin bag filled with all my stuff (mostly taken up by camera gear + laptop), but I make sure to pack an almost empty fabric bag for after I've gone through security. That way I can just pack all the stuff I've had to take off/out and carry on my shoulder, and don't have to stop and re-pack everything before heading to my gate. I also carry a small purse with passport and travel documents, but that usually ends up inside the fabric bag. The fabric one is also where I keep all the things I need access to on the actual flight. Any handbags/purses I need are either packed in checked in bags or in the cabin bag, as they aren't always ideal for packing for a hand-luggage.

I always go for the front row seats because sometimes it has more legroom! And I always pre-order meals online because it's cheaper & they always serve pre-booked meals first during the flight. Also, if you already have a black bag, use your creativity & decorate it a little! I use those coloured luggage tags (you can buy it at an airport or stationary store) & also sometimes I tie coloured shoe laces on the handle of the bag. :)

Never (!) buy a 4-wheeled suitcase! 4-wheeled suitcases are very comfortable as long as you're in an airport. As soon as you leave the airport and get on a road or side walk with bad surface (like London) or in a pretty medieval town with copplestone roads 4-wheeled suitcases with their tiny wheels are a nightmare! Buy 2-wheeled suitcases with inlineskate wheels - they have soft rubber wheels with bigger diameter (much biger that the 4-wheeled versions).
@svenlima
@svenlima 7 лет назад
You can pull any suitcase - even without wheels ... - but the bigger the wheels the better. 4-wheeled suitcases have tiny wheels. If +Eli Smith's friend had problems with a 2-wheeled suitcase it was certainly not because in had only 2 wheels but some other technical issue. It's my experience and I don't want to hold back anybody to do his/her own (bad or good) experiences ... :-)

I recently traveled internationally and learned a few tips while there, don’t know if these are common knowledge but thought I would share in case I’m wrong! 1) use the bathroom BEFORE meals are passed out. Even if you don’t need to go, you will most likely have to after your meal, and so will everyone else. Planes also typically announce when meals will be passed out, so people will be more reluctant to use the bathroom thirty minutes before a meal, which means you get the bathrooms to yourself! 2) it’s also important to use the bathroom before lights out if you’re flying over night, no one wants to have to wake up the stranger next to them to pee! 3) WARM SOCKS. If you bring ANYTHING on a plane to keep you warm bring the thickest socks you have, maybe even two. Planes get freezing, especially the floor and it is not easy to sleep with ice for feet! 4) Look for empty isles. I’ve tried this one out and it works, it’s always a good idea to ask a flight attendant before switching to a free isle, but most of the time they don’t mind if you just go ahead and sit there. A much more restful sleep awaits 5) the most important thing I’ve learned on my travels is to make friends with those around you, especially when traveling solo. I could not tell you how many times I got confused or needed help on my first flight solo. If I hadn’t communicated and made friends with strangers I wouldn’t have made one of my flights as they figured out that I was in the wrong customs line and helped me flag down an employee! This is especially helpful during international travel, as many travelers speak the native language of the country you are in and can ask questions for you if you don’t speak the language. Strangers can be surprisingly helpful on trips, as most are in the same position as you or are experienced travelers that are happy to help you on your way. Don’t be shy!
@amandahagen7433
@amandahagen7433 6 лет назад
I forgot that I also have a few tips for the airports as well! Here they are: 1) always find your gate as soon as possible. Even if your a few hours early, finding your gate right away will help put you at ease and will allow you to enjoy your time st the airport and explore more, knowing how far you can go and what time to start heading back to your gate. This is also super helpful if a flight gets in early, that way you won’t be surprised and panic when you can’t find your flight! 2) Coffee ships and restaurants in airports typically have much more comfortable seating than the seats by the gates, and typically employees don’t mind if you sit there for a while, no purchase necessary as long as you don’t go to a waited restaurant or take a spot when there is a paying customer waiting. These areas also tend to be much quieter than the rest of the airport and have the feel of a lounge without the extra money 3) Try to walk around as much as possible in airports if you are traveling for a long time (international and/or overnight). You may be tired but your legs will thank you and you will end up feeling much more energized once you get to your destination. Things in rest tend to stay in rest while things in motion tend to stay in motion. This is a great way to help minimize jet lag in my experience 4) Utilize airport bathrooms. I know they can be gross sometimes but if you have a few minutes before being picked up at your destination or are on your last layover before a short flight, brushing your teeth, washing your face, and changing (also applying makeup if that’s your thing!) will make you feel much more refreshed and awake for your destination, and will generally put you in a better mood Hope these tips help someone!! If anyone has any more questions I would be happy to help, I’ve traveled quite a bit so I have some knowledge on traveling (not as much as Nadine though!) and I would be happy to help :)

If you're late for a flight that's about to board/is boarding, airport staff isn't likely to help unless you have a connecting flight or other reasons that were faults of the airport. I've heard on numerous occasions airport staff tell people they should have gotten to the airport earlier. So unless you have legitimate proof chances are they won't help. Of course there are exceptions but it's not likely. So get to your flights early!

Yep, I always tape blue gaffers tape around the handle, super easy to identify the bag.

Don't forget about paying attention to the PA system 'cause you never know when they decided to change the departure gates for your flight. This happened to me once in Singapore. I wasn't in any hurry that time but if I hadn't paid attention I might not have known about it and would have had a higher chance of missing my flight. Also if the security at that other gate didn't know about the changes, you could tell them you heard it on the PA system and they would check it out. One other thing, once the announcement is made, make sure you get to that other gate in plenty of time, just in case security didn't know about it.

Erin nayler I have flown as a kid flying alone too. Don't worry, the airline staff is very friendly to children flying alone, and most likely your parents will be allowed to walk with you through the airport! 🙂

Don't worry, Erin. You will be fine. Most likely your parents or another adult can take you to your departure gate and meet you at the arrival gate. I'm sure your parents will have that all sorted for you. My one bit of advice would be, don't feel too shy to speak up if you need something, if you have questions, if another passenger is making you feel uncomfortable or for any other reason. Oh and bring some entertainment.

I was in line in Athens to go through customs and my connecting flight was already boarding. Everyone in line (20+ people) let me jump in front so I wouldn't miss my flight. I was so thankful that it brought me to tears!!!
