Many people think that because an Airstream has a curved, riveted metal exterior that they don't leak. Well, they do. The one thing I learned is that I need to be much more diligent in regular resealing!

Love hearing your project. Would be super helpful to show how you wield your tools as you’re removing caulk. Various tricks or tough spots, how you approach it, the actual “how to” of removal. You two have great energy. Many thanks.

Thanks for watching! There's always room for a follow up video (I need to remove the caulk around a vent) so I'll keep your suggestions in mind.

What’s the difference between the sika 221 and the one that you are using? Thanks!

If you haven't already you might look into investing in an Olympic rivet shaver and some Olympic rivets for outside riveting. I personally would not put a pop rivet on my roof. I've replaced several rivets on the exterior with Olympic rivets and a shaver that fits into the end of my drill with no issues, super easy.

Thanks for watching and the suggestion. I'll consider it. BTW, I did cover the pop rivet in sealant...

Getting ready to order product for our 2005 16 Bambi roof reseal, curious how much product you needed for you project? After looking at many vid's and blogs I've settled on Sikaflex 221 for seams and Sikaflex 721 for the AC and Fantastic. Figuring if I bought as much as you used to reseal your roof, I'd end up with some extra but at least have enough when I get started. Big fans of your channel, thanks for the work you put in.

Thanks so much for watching! If I recall, I bought 2 tubes of the Sikaflex (from Defender Marine) and had some left over. For the seams around the windows and the non-roof seams we use ACRYL-R that we purchased from Woodland's Airstream. It's expensive and you have to buy the applicator as well. We recently had a leak in our front window and we seem to have fixed that. We may do a video on the ACRYL-R now that we know we are competent enough to fix it.

How often do owners have to have this done?
@LuvSubbin

Thanks for watching! It's different based on the environment that the trailer sees. Is it in the intense sun of Texas? Is it stored inside during the winter? A good check is to climb up and test how pliable the sealant is. I think a very general rule of thumb is that the sealant should be scraped and replaced every 5 - 7 years.

Still shopping for an Air stream but certainly enjoy your videos. You are so right about marine products in cost but usually great stuff. About leaks, owning a larger sailboat I can tell you that the ingress of leaks are never near the wet areas. On my boat it seams that the root of the leak is always feet or yards from where I think it is.
@LuvSubbin
@LuvSubbin Год назад
Thanks for watching and so very true on both counts. Whenever I work on the Sub I always try to upgrade to marine hardware and marine standards. For example, the ABYC does not allow wire nuts on boats, thus my use of the Wago connectors.

Yep...rivets pop and old caulk cracks/gets hard and must be replaced!! Glad you’re on top of things and addressing the leak before it gets out of hand. With the inner shell, it’s hard to tell where the leaks are. We’re restoring a 76 Airstream Excella and yes, it had many, many leaks. We enjoy your videos! Keep em coming.

I hope you caulked the hole in the pop rivet you used on the roof. That tiny hole is a leak source.

This is off topic but here’s a question and perhaps an idea for content...Do you use the bath/shower in your Airstream all the time or do you sometimes use the bath facilities at campgrounds and how will that change when we can camp again (🤞🏻 soon ) post covid? I’ve been thinking about the ways we might do things differently in the future.
@LuvSubbin
@LuvSubbin 4 года назад
Thanks for watching and the suggestion! Even though we have a wet bath (which many people dislike), we actually almost always use our Airstream's shower. I think one thing that will change is that we usually will use the restroom at rest areas/gas stations and that will probably change... Good idea to document!
@randallgodfrey3852
@randallgodfrey3852 4 года назад
We have always used the shower in our Airstream. I'll sometimes take a walk to use the restroom, but will probably not do that do for a while until the COVID threat is mostly gone.

I have always used a heat gun to soften caulk. Not sure if it works on that type but if so your life will be much easier removing caulk
@LuvSubbin

@@LuvSubbin Maybe an electric heat gun. You will get better control of the heat.

It's just embarrassing that such expensive caravans start to leak over time. If you wanted, you could process it better during production ...
@LuvSubbin
@LuvSubbin 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! Very true but I think the issue with sealant is that the constant UV and elements degrade it over time. Not sure what the solution to that is...
@creative3872
@creative3872 3 года назад
@@LuvSubbin The solution would be to weld the seams to the sheet metal with a laser. That should be possible with such an expensive product ... Remember, the airstream caravans cost at least three times as much as other products ...
@m.r.4798

@@creative3872 if you weld the aluminum sheets together you couldn’t replace individual sections in case of damage.
@DavidLaFerney
@DavidLaFerney 2 года назад
@@creative3872 except the aluminum panels on airstreams have a plastic clear coat that would be destroyed by heat welding. Everything is a compromise, and nothing lasts forever.
