Thank you for visiting Airstream_Wheeler. It is spring and getting warmer. Our 2006 Airstream AC unit was tired, loud and sounded like jingling metal when it was running. We did not want our dometic unit to fail in the heat of the summer when we needed it the most. We ordered one from RecPro and the Houghton brand is supposed to be more efficient and much quieter. This is how we installed it.

Nice video but it would’ve been much better without that loud music in the background. Not sure why people think they need background music. At one point I couldn’t hear what you said due to the music being so loud.

Hi, thanks for making the video. It was informative on the installation. For the airstream, did you need to buy the "thick roof kit" (greater than 2-3/4" thick) that Houghton offers? Or, did it fit without it? Also, did you buy the soft-start option? Thanks for your help.

Hello, Thanks very much for watching, glad you found it helpful! We did not buy the thick roof kit. The mistake we made was not having an Airstream drain kit ready to use. We thought we could reuse the original drain pan but it broke. The one downside to our install without the drain kit (no time to wait for shipping with an open hole in the roof!) is the condensation now runs down the body... We just bought the drain kit and we are going to reinstall the AC with it, time permitting.

Hi guys...Thinking about buying a Houghton for my 94' AS Soverign....just curious what you did about the drip tube? Thanks for your reply in advance!!

Hi, Thanks for watching! We were under the impression that we would be able to reuse/modify the old pan under the new AC that runs to the drain tube, but we cracked it while removing.... so ours drains on to the body now, rather than in to the tube. I believe there is a drain kit available and we should have had it standing by.

Hi there and thanks for the video! We also have a 2006 Airstream and are considering the Houghton a/c. What exactly did you do for the furnace wiring?

There are 2 thermostat wires that come off of our furnace which is located under my oven. I bought a simple analog thermostat and ran those two wires through the cabinets to my bedroom wall. The RecPro AC is run off of a remote that comes with it. Although, I do have 2 devices to control heating and cooling so it isn’t as streamlined as before. I like the furnace thermostat on the bedroom wall for those chilly mornings. I then sold my old thermostat on eBay. If you can salvage the old ac drain pan that ties into your condensate drain lines you might be able to hack that to work for the RecPro according to the internet. Mine was too brittle and broken so I do get a little condensation sometimes dribbling down the side of my Airstream.

@@airstream_wheeler I'm actually glad you included the unpacking and shipping damage that was found into the video as I was wondering about the shipping damage for such a large unit. I wouldn't trust UPS with handling that unit where I live as it would be destroyed upon arrival and UPS would fight that they didn't do it. I'm considering a Houghton unit as well, but am considering driving the five hours to pick it up instead just to insure I don't get what you got.

@toddtonis - Thanks again for watching, We thought that info would be helpful, the good news is that they sent replacement parts quickly and with no hesitation. Lesson learned from us- don't open it minutes before you want to install in case of damage! Over all, I would say have it shipped is worth it... Unless you want to make a camping trip out of picking it up!
