This shopping center opened in 1973 and after Hurricane Floyd in the 90's it's been struggling ever since.
Now it's mostly an empty shell with no one knowing any history of this shopping center in its hay day.
Located in Isle of Wight county Virginia outside of the small city of Franklin #Abandoned #Dead #dead mall

Thank you for posting this! My family recently relocated to IOW and live close to this place. It's very interesting to know some of its history. 😊❤

I’m glad you enjoyed. I have been finding most of my audience seems to be more into shopping centers than strip malls but it has an interesting history. You’re in the county and not Franklin? I grew up in Smithfield.

Hi Keith! Wondering how you're able to compile the history of these centers; guessing maybe Pilotonline? When I was working for a local beverage distributor 2001-2003, Franklin was on my Thursday route. I had no customers in that shopping center. I can tell you at that time Winn-Dixie had been at a stand alone location on Armory Drive and had been there several years. If I remember correctly, it was next to Food Lion, where Lowes is today.

Actually I used the library of Virginia. They have a site where you can search all newspapers archives so I was searching all mentions of this place in the Smithfield Times. Actually the Winn Dixie wasn’t in the Lowe’s shopping center but a stand alone store on the road that passed the college off Armory Drive. It was the 90’s I thought it closed there but I would have to check.

@@DyingRetail I'll have to check the Library of Virginia sometime. The W-D was on my Thursday route. I don't remember Lowes being there then and was thinking that W-D and FL were that close together. I remember taking a back street between the two stores. You're probably right about the location. W-D closed all the Virginia locations before 2010 if I remember correctly.

Stewart Dr runs behind Lowe’s. Goes to College Drive right next to where they moved to.

Can anyone remember if the People’s Drug Store in the Airway Center had a lunch counter ?

You must be a local :) I knew it was there but no other history of it.

This shopping center is MUCH better preserved, than I thought it was be. Save for one boarded up window by a former church there's not much vandalism(that is a big and pleasant surprise), vs. what has occurred at other ones after all stores move out. What year did the final store move out of there?

I’d have to go back and look but I think it was the mid 90’s. Was a hair salon.

+BoratWanksta I believe it was early 2000’s. It was a hair salon.

4k is fine but Chrome based browsers on the Mac don't seem to support these HDR videos and I have issue with my cursor bogging down when trying to play a video in HDR. It also takes you a long time to upload. Drop the HDR and you will have it.

Thanks for the input. I found the following thread online with people on macs with chrome having issues and wanted to share this thread with you to see if it helps with your issue or not: discussions.apple.com/thread/253384210?answerId=256332376022#256332376022

Misread thread where they were talking about Safari but wonder if what their discussion was for fix might help with chrome.
