I think what the guy was feeling was not really a crush. I think his marriage needed work and the grass on the other side of the fence started looking really good. She said he was working late and coming to their house for drinks, that was not helping his marriage. I’m not going to bash anyone in this story. It really wasn’t her dad’s business, and she could have directed him to her sister for the answers he wanted. I had a male friend years ago. When his marriage hit a rough patch, he thought he was in love with me. The fact was, we would have had the same issues as him and his wife were having, because I understood why they were having issues to begin with.

Sis was having marriage problems long before her hubs showed up at your house, so she can quit trying to blame you. And Dad, butt out!!

Personally, Dad needed to know as it was affecting the families relationship, Tom had respectfully realised he had a problem and backed completely off and, unless things that weren't disclosed happened, everyone had been respectful. The only person who seems to be acting completely irrationally is Ellin, who just chose never to seek reconciliation at all costs even though nothing happened. Op really should've opened up sooner to her father particularly as she hadn't done anything wrong, and was probably the AH for keeping it a secret an *entire year*. The entire issue lay firmly between Tom and Ellin and her insistence on pinning any issues in their relationship on her sibling. Otherwise there isn't any issue on OP's end. Edited a name.

I think she knew her sister would be a brat about telling dad so she just wanted to avoid the drama. But i do agree the dad needed to know.

@@lifeandeverythinginbetwn Oh aye, and it understandable why she took that stance. Just, sometimes taking some action even if you don't want to is better then letting matters fester. There is a point that being exceedingly polite and avoiding any matter of conflict just because it is more comfortable can be harmful.

NTA, I believe it was better the dad found out the reason as it would have probably been met with understanding. Sure, it may not seem like so due to the reaction, but is understandable considering he didn't know why his daughters weren't on speaking terms.

Although Dad didn't have any reason to yell at OP's husband. WTF? For that matter, even Tom didn't deserve a yelling at that late date if that's what was really meant. Only Ellen deserved the yelling, but even then I can just dimly understand her reaction. But why is dad yelling at anyone? He's dad not mom. Just forget all this high school crap and watch TV or drink a beer alone.

OP, the only thing you did wrong was tell your dad the truth. It wasn't your secret to tell. You really should have tried to talk to Ellen, and if that didn't work, just leave her alone. When your dad demanded info, you should have simply told him you didn't start things, and it wasn't your fault. You say he wouldn't let up? Fine, just leave the room, the house, or hang up the phone. It was none of your dad's business, and he wasn't a part of it.
