I don't trust the "you just have to have faith" approach to figuring something out. That's too catholic. If the leaders of a religion are unwilling to be queried to satisfaction, them I'll assume they don't believe or understand the subject matter. As Ajahn Nissaro stated, Buddha said to investigate. But here's one thing: the Buddha had no Buddha. So if he didn't need an organized religion and found enlightenment on his own, who's to say someone else couldn't? Or, taken further: given Buddha found enlightenment without Buddhism, what is the point of it? Posessions are nothing but a burden, ime and imo. "Is It better with this or better without?" - that's a great tool, thanks! I will try to remember that.

Phoenix Chastaine A scientist said to investigate but the scientist had no scientist so if he didn't need science to discover the earth went around the sun when there was no science,whos to say someone else couldn't?or to take it further given the scientists discovered that the earth revolved around the sun without science,whats the point of it? I agree that faith in Buddhism should usually come from investigating our inner selves and that we shouldn't just read or hear something and believe it.Buddha actually said something very similar. Youre correct someone can go for a walk never knowing about Buddhism and become enlightened the same way someone can go for a walk and realise the earth revolves around the sun and not know about science.

Investigate to see if your experience matches the evidence, I guess. The point of buddhism is a guide, experiences and mileage may vary :) It's suggestions to give you stuff to explore, is how I see it. If you experience things differently, it's all good. The Buddha had no buddha to learn from directly, but he investigated the teachings available and took inspiration or warning from what he learned, based on what he experienced. It's possible to reach enlightenment without buddhism or other labels, I believe, but it can be helpful to have a teacher to promt you to ask certain questions to explore things a certain way to encourage progress. Ultimately it's down to our own mind and explorations to find what works for us.
