I legit finished RTK today (minutes ago infact). To see this video uploaded today is so appropriate! I'm so happy to have finally made it through the whole book!!!!

TheZalor How's RTK in general? Like, I feel somewhat hesitant to use it once I'm done with grammar because it doesn't teach you the readings (at least for book 1 from what I can see), and since I'm mostly studying to pass the EJU test (hopefully in 2/3 years), I really don't think that's going to help.

jpnmusic2 In my experience so far, RTK has honestly not been very useful for me (in fact, I think it was a bit of a waste). Personally I'm learning Japanese mostly just to read, so I couldn't give you any advice on tests. But in my experience, you memorize a lot more kanji a lot more efficiently simply by reading and looking words up. Overtime, words repeat themselves and eventually you remember them. Simply through exposure you will remember how the kanji look like, and you will learn how to recognize and distinguish them. However, RTK has been helpful for remembering how to write the kanji (not read, just write). So if you are taking a test with pen and paper, then it might be a bit more useful for you.

I see. Well, I just picked up some novels from local japanese center, and I was thinking that maybe I should just learn the main radicals, learn the joyo kanji and try read the novels. It really looks interesting, so I guess it's a good practice and all. As for grammar well I guess I could finish the Basic Grammar + Essential Grammar section of Kim Tae's guide to Japanese so I at least understand the stuff that's explained. I just wonder if I should learn Kanji on order of most popular to least popular, or nah..

jpnmusic2 I imagine reading paper novels would be quite difficult. I read visual novels (which you run on your computer) and I hook up the text with a dictionary program. That way I can look up words (especially unfamiliar kanji) really quickly by simply copy and pasting them to a dictionary. If I had to sit down and look up every unfamiliar kanji based on their stroke order, or by their radicals; I would want to shoot somebody (probably my self, lol). As for Tae Kim, I recommend doing the Special Expressions section as well. Advanced Topics you can save for a while later, but Special Expressions still has some basic and fundamental stuff you will need.

I see. I'll do that then. Didn't think of it, but I guess reading VNs is a good idea. I already played most of the Muv Luv VNs (up to ~Chronicles 02), so I guess I could either play them again or read Chronicles 03. As for Kanji, reckon learning 6 kanji with their principal onyomi/kunyomi is good if I want to learn the joyo kanji? Stroke order and radicals of course (although after a while I won't need to look up the stroke order). And in which order do I learn them? With the JLPT N5-N4-N3-N2-N1 order or what? I'm ultimately aiming for the Examination for Japanese University Admission test (maybe in 2½ years) so.

9:00 "it's because I cared that I entered, and it's because I cared that I left." Khatzumoto... this resonates with me to this day. I'm about to leave a company for this exact reason... Hope ya'll are safe and well. Cheers.

I remember I was arguing with this dude on the internet, and I said that basically Japan isn't full of racists and bigots and it isn't some horribly xenophobic culture that will shun you. This guy went on to tell me that "Mainland japan is super xenophobic, they are so bad that okinawa hates mainland japan, because all my friends told me that" and it was like that prisoner thing you said. He surrounded himself with some small minority of Okinawans who hate mainland japan and believed their point of view without even being to mainland japan.
