if any of you have any doubts about this, i got to tell you it actually works this is how i learned english i just spent 60% of my time watching vlogs on youtube, playing games or other stuff and it was all in english i didn't do it because i wanted to learn english i did it cause i liked the content and well in about 2 years i ended up knowing quite a lot of english so my point is you guys should watch what you like and you shouldn't feel like you are doing this to learn japanese but to have fun

Language acquisition is a process in which its participants need not be aware. - I forget. But it's true! Native speakers learn to fluency with nearly a 100% success rate through the same way everytime. An environment in that language, doing things "in" the language and constant interaction with the language. Sit down, immerse, and pay attention, and you will learn. As long as your input is greater than zero you will suck slightly less. Learning 5 words in a day is better than none. Knowing 30% of the words in an episode is better than none. Listening to 15 minutes of audio is better than not doing it at all. Consistency and having trust in the process will get you to fluency. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go fail the N6.

Almost a year and a half into ajatt (with a couple of unfortunate months off due to life commitments). I watched these videos before I began ajatt and now I'm back once again to rekindle my motivation which has been waning over the last little while due to my level not being nearly as high as I wanted it to be. Thanks to these videos I feel that my motivation is returning to the level that got me through RTK all those months ago. Thanks Khatz.

Rated 5 stars and commenting to help the video in results as I think although its only 30 mins in total its probably one of the sources that will/has helped me the most in learning japanese. Katz speaks a lot of sense and points out the simple fact that being immersed will help you without you realising, ive gone to university in a different part of the country (in england), and coming back after 4 years everybody says my accent has changed, its just something that naturally happens Great vid!

Honestly this makes so much sense because my experience with English proves it. I've never benefited a thing from school other than alphabets and basic vocabulary and grammar. Grammar later on became a hindrance to me even. It got so complicated I couldn't keep up with it, and yet I was the best in my school when it came to English, and that wasn't because I "studied" it. The only studying I did was looking up words when I didn't know them. That's basically what SRS sentences encourage. The real meat of the language came from me using it every single day since I discovered the internet. Since I was 12. Everything I liked was in English so I started to pick it up. Even watching YT I wouldn't understand a lot but I had to learn what the guy was saying so that I can install that cheat mod into that game and shit talk my opponents, in English too xD. I wasn't methodical with it like AJATT is and that's probably why it took so long before I actually became fluent (in highschool I would've considered myself just a little bit away from fluency, when I started college I considered myself fluent). English at that point was as natural as breathing to me and I preferred it to my native even in my own thinking. So I really understand why this works from firsthand experience and I can't wait to apply it to my Japanese too, and later on to Korean... and Portuguese... and Spanish... and German lol. But better not get ahead of myself.

The part about like "90% percent of star trek is star trek words" makes alot of sense. I'm going to watch japanese Seinfeld and that whole show is basically like everyday conversation so it would probably work well. I'm starting to get kind of excited about trying this method :) the only thing that sucks is that i have to go to school and go to work and that takes up most of my time and not one person speaks japanese. It'll make it more difficult.

I think if you use this method of audio and visual input and combine it with learning the most used vocabulary words, that will be a recipe for success. As kids we learn individual words first, then learn how to combine other words with them until we can make sentences. That way when your watching something, you can pick out some words already and see how they use them and how they connect. Plus it would be more fun that way, which will keep people more motivated to stick with it.

This is some deep stuff. I'm more of an output from day 0 adherent, but I've always utilized passive learning (listening in one ear) as an additional strategy- it doesn't cost anything and it can be fun. I more on the Laoshu55000/ Benny Lewis tip than the Steve Kaufman/ Krashen side but hey we're all language learners and we all get along. I'm one of those (perhaps rare) learners who actually did learn Cantonese and Mandarin in school and did pretty well if I do say so myself, but I think that was because I was always taking my shit outside the school and practicing on "The Streets of San Francisco."

It really is common sense, it's just that we're so used to learning out of textbooks, hands on experience sounds irrelevant. But all of this is entirely true. I mean, I lived in Jordan for a year and a half and I learned fluent Arabic without even taking a class. Ironically I forgot it all after a few years in the US, but still. The same thing applies to anime. Ive been taking Japanese classes for about four months now, yet like 60% of the vocab I know I learned from Anime. It's Simple.

this is how i would explain how it works. if you say the word 'apple' you immediatly think of an apple, (a real one or a picture, ..or maybe new york or something obscure ;) thats the way you need to think about words in a new language. if you learn from a text book tho when you you see 'ringo' you first think of the word 'apple' THEN from the english think of the picture of an apple or whatever. thats going about things the long way. translation in text books slows you down. bad way to learn!

awesome! I have actually started really learning kanji because i found his site. But he does make it sound like as if a language class is useless.. which is totally, well, untrue. The point of a language class is structured input. What this does is order the stuff you get in such a way that new stuff is more easily understood. Whereas 'free input' like what he promotes is rather chaotic and therefore eventually demands more attention/repetition. But you will always need free input in the end.
