Welcome back to part 2 of the Kimberly Dress Sew Along. I will be making two dresses during this series and today I am doing the v-neck bodice with the sleeve. I’m making a few adjustments to the pattern, like fully lining the bodice (instead of using facings). Let me know if you have any questions in the comments below!

Excellent filming! We could easily see all of the understitching when you repositioned the camera. Thanks Whitney

That tip on sewing the darts is priceless! I always would stop at the very tip and then tie off the threads, but invariably that causes a pucker. Great solution! Thanks Whitney :)

Love what you did on this. Great video. I learned how to pull lining through the shoulders in college in the 60’s, but I’ll bet a lot of your viewers have never seen this done. Alas, at my age I’m no longer wearing tops that are sleeveless but this is a great lesson

I can't wear sleeveless anymore, but still it's great to see how to pull a lining through the top of the sleeve! Great video. Liked the close up shots very much. Thank you.

I need to watch this twice because I have never turned a lined Bodice-great view of that practice. Whitney makes it less intimidating to me. I am planning a dress in Rayon Challis where I plan to try it. Thank you! Whitney! ~ L

Great video! I don’t stop 5/8 inch from the side seam. I match the side seams for the front back fabric layers and the side seams for the front back lining layers and sew the fabric side seam and the lining side seam all in one pass. I sew right over the under arm connection for the lining and fabric.
@TomKatStitchery

After thinking about this, you could totally do it that way and that honestly sounds easier 😂.

Excellent tutorial Whitney. Question..why did you choose not to line the skirt? Wouldn’t the silk lining be so luxurious in the inside of the skirt?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
I could have lined the skirt, but I only had enough for the bodice and since the skirt didn’t need a lining, I just left it off. For the record, silk skirt linings are extremely luxurious 😉.

On your white and grey dress, could you make a cut where your petite adjustment should be and add in a stripe of grey right there?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
I can definitely do that! The issue would be the sleeve, but I could also make it sleeveless!

Please explain why you do understitching instead of top stitching. I usually do top stitching because it is easier but I think understitching is considered more couture. Thanks!
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
You could definitely do topstitching if you want that feature and, in that case, you don’t need to understitch. Understitching keeps the lining from showing or rolling to the outside, but keeps the lines nice and clean if you don’t want the top stitching.

Usually we use interfacing with a facing. . . Why no interfacing with a lining?
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад
You really want to interface a facing because the amount of fabric is small (usually just a couple inches in width). The interfacing helps the facing keep its shape. We have basically sewn the neckline twice (once to attach the lining and one to understitch) so while you could stabilize that area with a small strip of interfacing, I find that the double stitching keeps everything in place and in shape.
@barbaramckenzie326
@barbaramckenzie326 4 года назад
If you are sewing the side seam in all one pass (Fashion fabric on through the lining) there is no reason to stop sewing the facing into the armhole at the seam allowance - you could sew it all the way and understitch all the way.
@TomKatStitchery
@TomKatStitchery 4 года назад

Where do you purchase your silk, where do you go for a good price?
@TomKatStitchery

This silk was some of the stash I inherited from my sewing mentor. However, Dharma Trading Company has some china silk, charmeuse, and crepe de chine in quite a few colors for a good price!
