Hi Michael. The original AX-73 has a multi pin connector on the back specificity for connection of AKAI samplers in order to run external sounds through it's filters. I modified this one so that a standard 1/4" audio jack could also be used, meaning any sound source can provide the external audio.
Hi. I added a 1/4 jack socket to this unit. Simply a case of drilling a hole and installed the jack. Then soldering the tip to the input points of the sampler input. There should be no need to add any series resistance as this is already in place in the circuit.
Hmmm.. this thing has lots of space to set stuff around the interface. Picture this: Right side - Microbrute, MFB Microzwerg and DSI MoPho behind interface, Kurzweil K2000r, and laptop stacked to the left of the interface. Must get this thing NOW!
Fred Payette $50??? :-O You lucky $#!%! They go for well over $500 on eBay, IF you can even find one. You got a (VERY) great deal, on an awesome vintage 80's synth. ;-)
Thanks for the info ! I swear it is absolutely LIKE NEW, still with the original box and manual/quick reference card and all. No scratch or dent, just the volume slider that has some noise when you move it. I guess I lucked out ;) I'm no synth head but I'm starting to find some nice sounds out of it !
Fred Payette I couldn't be more jealous. }:-\ hehehe I'm joking. It's awesome that you were able to get such a great vintage synth so cheaply & in such good condition. I'm sure you'll find &/or create many great sound on the AX73. Do you have an effects processor to run your AX73 through? Add a little delay &/or chorus & will sound even better. Personally I love analog modeling/virtual analog synths, & vintage synths from the mid-late 1970's to late 1980's. I have a lot of AM/VA synths & a few from the mid 80's, but none from the 70's &/or pure analog synths. I hope to pick up an Akai AX80 & AX73 someday. The Roland JX10p "Super JX" is another awesome mid-80's synth I badly want. It's a real beast.
Well I'm not really equipped hardware wise. For now I am running my AX73 thru a Tascam MIDI and audio interface, then into Ableton (Just started 2 days ago). With some delay it does sound great ! What I really want to find is a good MIDI arpeggiator. I did find some great sounds ! But all of that being quite new to me, I'm still in the exploring phase.
On the AX73, when sampler input is used, is it controllable with midi? On my AX-60, the only way to have the samples mixed in is to either hand play it or trigger the arp. It won't respond when played via midi, only the synth plays.
Lawrence No disrespect but this is an actual analog synth whereas your dss 1 is more expensive, shittier built quality and overall an actual shittier digital synth, which holds no candle to an actual analog 6 voices deep analog synth. But hey, you do you.
The AX73 has 1 oscillator per voice. It's a decent synth but not at all deep. It would make more sense to say this about the AX80. The DSS1 is a digital/analog hybrid sampler. Not all that comparable, but I found that I liked its analog filters more that the ones in the AX60 I played. Used as a synth, it's also much deeper, but the hardware is probably less reliable than that of the AX73. The DW8000 is similar but a synthesizer and not a sampler. Also much more reliable than the DSS1. If you're an analog purist you probably not gonna like either of these though
