The step recorder is a Force feature that I overlooked for quite some time. But it’s actually a pretty nice way to enter and discover new pattern ideas. If you like working with the step sequencers, you’ll feel right at home with the step recorder once you get your bearings.
I love step, recorders and step sequencers, and have been using external gear to input step recording because so many of the shortcuts you listed aren’t visible on the MPC live, but actually do work. Thank you so much!
This totally opened up a door for me.. I thought that this was more for a 'tracker' purpose, I was half ready to scrap it... thanks for this shortcut.. BIG game changer
i don't have much patience for step editing these days. but this is super useful, surgical. Thanks for the video! I'm definitely going to use it to make custom chord progressions. the way i was doing it before was anxiety inducing
Hey Dylan - glad to hear this was helpful. Chord progressions definitely shouldn’t be anxiety inducing haha! I really like this as an alternate way of creating patterns. The results just somehow end up different for me than if I create them some other way. Not always better. But sometimes they are!
Thanks for showing us the List Edit Step Recorder! Lots of great tips. I need to use that more often too. Did you know that this is the only view where polyphonic aftertouch data is shown (and edited)?
Hey M! I think it’s become one of my favorites for melodic step sequencing. At least for the initial entry. No, I had no idea about the poly AT. I’m not sure I’ve ever tried to edit poly AT in the Force. Nice tip!!
Hey @zanoludgood3424 thanks for watching. Drums work pretty much the exact same way. But yeah, in hindsight it probably would have been good to show that too.
Ha - good question. Or at least elaborated a little more in the user guide. I feel like this thing is a lot more capable than you’d think at first glance.
@@joefilbrun I think the manual can only do but so much on some topics. Something like this really needs a video & Akai, which does have a YT channel should've been the ones to make it, not you after all these years the product was released. Thanks for doing what they didn't but should've!
Hey good buddy! That’s an interesting idea. I know you can edit the probability and ratcheting there in the list view. But you might be able to real time (step) record it if you’re using the advanced 16 levels mode. I’m gonna try it - hadn’t though to.
Hey Chris - you can’t record automation using the step recorder. But if you are using a synth patch that has legato glide set up on the patch, you should be able to use the list view editor to extend the note length of some of the notes so that they stay held down when a new one is pressed, causing that glide effect.
