I've recently seen quite a lot of comments from people who are finding it hard to get to grips with the complexity of the Akai Force, so I made this video to share some tips and a method of learning that I found to de-complicate the process. Hopefully it will help anyone struggling to learn the Force, and de-stress the process a little.

You're such a sage Max! I experienced what you described more with ableton over the course of 3 years before I accepted that the layout just wasn't in my brains' language (if that makes any sense). Took to the force like a duck to water with your help and I'm such a tech head. Have been since the 90s, but I've never enjoyed something as much as the force. It is complex but with a bit of patience and practice, It just gets more and more approachable and inviting. It goes really well with the arturia microfreak if you're in to synthwave. I've never had more fun. (Only issue is that I need to figure out where the hell my Tubesynth has gone. Its disappeared lol).

Yeah I'm gonna hunt it down tonight. Its not a serious problem. You are a sage man. You actually remind me of Saytek haha. Joseph is also an awesome guy and inspiring. Might be the accent. When it comes to the perfected vids, I realised ages ago that you're either looking at a bonafide artist who's naturallly going to want to protect their craft because that's their hard work and they're never gonna answer "how did you do xyz??..". But then there are 100s that are less-discreet but only give enough away to get you to buy audio packs. The proof for that is found just by looking at how many tutorials there are around building/understanding contempory song structures from different genres. All you'll find is 'how to make tech house in 5 mins" etc... you can't make anything to build knowledge, confidence and quality in 5 minutes haha. Loads on making *that sound*... they sell packs/midi libraries. You're saying stuff I know people will benefit from hearing that they aren't hearing anywhere else; that I could have done with hearing a couple of years ago. I hope everyone focused less on tutorials as a result, and more on having fun, while considering what you've said here. My own personal philosophy is - "dont try and make good music, just make your music for you." You can't fail at that. You're a good guy!

🙂👍What a great, concise teaching that gets to the root of the matter! That must be why when I change the volume on the mixer, things get all weird. I don't think I'm recording mixer volume data, but is it actually recording mixer volume data without telling me? Do you know why they want to make things so user unfriendly?
@MaxipokMusic
@MaxipokMusic 2 года назад
Select the clip then press shift + clear automation, if the volume swing stops you’ll know that was the problem! I don’t think it is user unfriendly necessarily, just that it can do a lot which means there is inherently quite a lot to learn, just takes a bit of time 🙂

Thanks Simon! Yeah that was really cool of Gabe, made my day. Glad you found this useful. I agree, was thinking about that the other day - it’s kind of like Android VS iOS. The Force lets you set it up exactly how you want, which in turn can be a bit confusing. Whereas something like Maschine is more of a controlled experience which is easier to learn, but less flexible.

Cristal clear explanations and a very beautiful way of thinking, speaking and seeing things especially in the last part ! however, I have a question regarding a personal dilemma as I can't seem to find an answer: Although the Force is a machine offering more possibilities (sampler, sequencer, synthesizer...), I hesitate a lot between the Force and the Polyend play. Could you, in a few words and if possible, explain the differences between these two machines in what they have in common? Many thanks to you and for your nice job!
@MaxipokMusic
@MaxipokMusic Год назад
Thanks for the kind words! Well, the Play and the Force are very different. The Play is a sampler / sequencer, it doesn’t make any sounds itself, it manipulates samples. The Force does that too, but it also has built in synthesisers and an arranger. So it’s a bit like comparing a Digitakt to Ableton Live. Both great devices, but Force is a full workstation.
@phitre
@phitre Год назад
@@MaxipokMusic I thanked you for what you do because you do it really well and when it's good, it has to be said. I sincerely mean it. Going back to my original question, I think Polyend play might be enough for me. It seems to me easier to learn (logical, less possibilities) on the other hand, what is important when i work on music is to be able to use samples whose length is not limited and I think that the Force does not have no such limit? I believe Polyend play has one. Basically, I'm looking for an easy-to-use creative tool. Live sampling, I will never do. I have a preference for the Force but I'm afraid of its complexity, especially since I'm on Cubase and not on Ableton live. Could this be a good way to start learning Live? Anyway, i think that i will have to choose between complexity but more possibilities and easy to use but less functionalities! Thank very much and have a nice day!
@MaxipokMusic
@MaxipokMusic Год назад
@@phitre Well Force has disk streaming so there aren’t really any limits on sample lengths, you can put full stems / songs in the audio tracks and they play fine. I wouldn’t be put off by complexity, it’s no more complicated than an MPC or Maschine. I think the reputation for it being difficult to learn comes from people who have learned the MPC workflow and expect the Force to be the same because it’s an Akai box. It’s a different workflow but it’s not more complicated. If you give it a bit of time and practice you will become fluent on Force in a couple of weeks 🙂
@phitre
@phitre Год назад
@@MaxipokMusic Thank you very much for your support and your fast answer. Your precisions are interesting. I've never used any MPC before. I've had a production studio with a lot of hardware synths and everything managed via Cubase. As a DJ (i am programing music... As a DJ, you know what i mean, i am not a musician), i've been tempted to switch to Ableton live because much of the DJ community favors Ableton Live but i use to use Cubase and to be honest, i am leazy to switch to Live because (at the begining) it's gonna takes time to do almost the same as Cubase... That's why i told you (above) that Force could be interesting for me, it would be a step ahead to switch to Ableton Live later... What is very good is that you've confirmed me that there is no limit with the sample size which is very important when you want to use (long) acapella for a DJ set. I still don't know which one i am gonna buy but it must be fast and intuitive. Anyway, to master a machine, you need to know it ! Maybe a precison which may help you if never you have another idea to make my choice, apart from my DJ equipment, i have also a Pioneer DJS 1000 (i guess that you know it). My goal (for live set) is to sync the Force (or the Polyend play) via the DJS 1000. Also and to finish (because i've wrote to much already, sorry) is to use this groovebox to make my music when i'm at home working on my cubase. Now, you know everything. thanks a lot for your patience and have a nice saturday :-)

I think lot of people like myself buy the Force and approach it as a musical instrument ie they buy it because they want to make music, even bad music will do but unless you already know how to do that the Force seems like it actively stops you doing that! I wanted to learn to make a basic melody, then add a drum kit, then a bass, maybe some pads and some twiddly bits on to lol. That doesn’t sound so difficult! But just getting the right synth on a track was a learning curve. Putting down notes of different lengths was painful without external keyboard. (Learn editing midi piano roll maybe time correction on step sequencer… all of that was hard work. Watching multiple video asking questions on forums etc. That’s just to put Down a melody and have simple drums (if you can find a basic drum kit - I still haven’t) As an experiment this week I decided to see if I could use step sequencer to play ‘twinkle twinkle little star’ with a basic drum beat using just step sequencer. Nope - no tied notes on the Force … would legato work. Nope only on Salina. I’d need to edit the piano roll use time corrections maybe. … so even the simplest tune unless youalready have an overview of the whole five instruments is really challenging! Hers my point. I think your RIGHT I have to learn each section- no matter how painful and uninspiring that maybe. Think I’m probably just overwhelmed and over thinking this. Iive watched a few videos on effects … sounds like ya need a degree in sound engineering just to understand those people. I know nothing about samplers, don’t get key groups which I read are a problem on the Force as far as assigning ranges (no idea how to do that) … etc … If I want to play music while I continue to learn I can go to my piano or guitar. Thank you as always for another insightful video.
@MaxipokMusic
@MaxipokMusic Год назад
I think it’s definitely harder for people coming from a ‘real’ instrument background as they are learning two things at once - electronic music techniques like sequencing and sound design, and the actual device workflow as well. I suppose in that case it’s natural to watch lots of Akai Force tutorials, when in actual fact videos about electronic music ‘first principles’ might be a better place to start. I have been thinking about a series on this subject for a while…

Coming from many years of linear recording from reel to reel /cassette 8trk/ GarageBand & onward it really hit home to hear you use that word , its so true .Its still linear, just hidden in multifunction buttons . I appreciate your advice & thank you .I wonder if Akai manual takes that in consideration? I think your process is a great way to learn Force. My problem is the language used in this format of recording ( a lot of it is new to me ) In your opinion ,does the manual explain the basic's enough to where to I can do a proper RU-vid search for specific advise ? There are many tutorials that assume you know more than you do.-
@MaxipokMusic
@MaxipokMusic Год назад
To be honest I think the manual is rubbish. It’s a technical document really, it says things like ‘press X button to make Y happen’ but it doesn’t explain what Y does in meaningful terms. I didn’t use it at all to learn the Force, and only refer to it now when I want to check something for a tutorial. If you are new to the Force, have a look back through my videos for the hour long beginners guide, if you follow that it should get you up to speed enough to start creating. Also the ‘modules’ I describe in this video are all the same in the MPC, so if you want to know how the sampler works, for example, you can watch an MPC Live tutorial and it will be the same. The MPC community is much bigger than the Force, and there are some great tutorials out there. Tubedigga is very good and has some great videos. I learned MPC from him and that meant I found Force quite easy to pick up. Once you have the basics, I’ve made a few more advanced tutorials about the Force-specific fun stuff that sets it apart!

@progwaver
@progwaver Год назад
Hello again In case you talk this I must say it was in different order for me also right to come into the Force , me start just with the grid and the plugin first. As I come from Ableton this was quite easy to do for me, its then like Ableton in the box. Mostly things are for me quite self explaining if I find them again. Now the Sampler isnt something I used also very often in Ableton, thats a whole story for itself wich i might will get on in the future. For me in the moment I am struggling bit is that I wanted import Ableton songs I already have into Force. Now while import as itself is not that difficult the problem is in the detail. As I had quite much tempochanges in Ableton , Force ignores that complete why the songs are not playable just from scratch.. Samples I already have in the Ableton arrangement and are there synchronised to the Tempo and changes just play their normal speed as recorded once. I also dont can find on Force neither in the Force nore in the manual the point wich tells about an automation of the tempo. Where is that parameter ? Does it exist or am I searching something never can be found ? I thought myself cause many things are in Force right there as they are also in Ableton or there where I think should be, for the Master Tempo Automation wich should for me be somewhere in the Master section in Arrangment is it not the case.. In Ableton there are 2 ways to get to it. you define in a Scene the tempo wich then change to it every time you launch a scene, that is also in arangemet recording then recorded, thats how i do my scenes in Ableton. Or you go Arangement Master lane you have the curve can even be draw. But in Force nothing from all like that. You have found something like that ? This might be not an important feature for electronic music wich is set to a tempo and played continously, but for rock I am doing it is. Even it were only for a slow down at the end of a song a quite common rock feature... And I think Force can handle this as i found in the Manual it can be tempo syncronised to an external gear clock and tempo as a slave, so it should my meaning and understanding also be possible that Force as master this also could send... Not ? A second point is that I am bit dissapointed on the Audio Interface Feature I wanted set up. I have it on its own again now, cause while i set it up it seems work quite well ( Presonus Audiobox 1818 ) , as I come back to it the week after nothing more worked, not even was it possible to start the Force.. not even more to shut down as well. As usual plug out the things to find whats the problem if I do the Interface, it started up. But shut down still not more work. I just then set the preferences back and now its work well again. But I think something is here not right perfect this feature.. cause the presonus is class complied should also work. I am also now on the latest Firmware 3.1.3 is available. Any experiances someone with this ? I dont know. I really like the Force, as I come more and more in it , I even programmed me like a template song with 40 tracks wich I always can start on for new things I compose and all stuff I need is ready for use. One point here is, while i loaded in samples for 7 Drumracks each with 16 or 24 Samples is no problem, if i load in finished song from Ableton only has 1 Drumrack and a few guitarlicks samples not long it runs out of RAM while loading the drums. Even songs has no guitar samples at all, it hangs itself on the Drumrack.. But I think its cause the Ableton Drumracks are with Multisamples and that is to much for the Force.. For me the whole song import from Ableton not works as feature, i cannot load in my songs without I adjust some things anyway not. I must now first edit the songs in Ableton and save seperately new with first only the MIDI Data of all tracks. Hope that will work then to bring my music into the force. I think I must then record the Audio new in Force direct and the Drum Set i take direct what i have now in Force.. but I dont want record anything new.. But its again much work, that was not how i imagined me this...

I’m sorry I can’t really help you with the Ableton import stuff. I never work like that so I haven’t learned how to do it. However, Force doesn’t have tempo automation at the moment, so that’s not possible right now. As for your ram issues, set those samples to stream from disk instead of ram and you should have no more problems. I use a Behringer UMC 404 interface and it works perfectly, not sure what the issue is with your focusrite. I would suggest plugging it into your computer and checking it’s control panel to make sure it is running at 44.1khz and 16bit.

@@MaxipokMusic Presonus... yes thats maybe a good idea to check that, cause I used it before for my Laptop for Ableton, and now you say I am not really more sure if I set it there on 44.1 , 16 bit .. defintivly a good idea. Yeah I thought so for the Tempo that I can not be so stupid I dont find hahaha. Well then we will wait that maybe once thats updated, finally its only a simple automation curve that should not be a problem hopefully. Yes thats with the Ram is a topic I not exactly found out yet, defintivly need more check if I find more about import in RU-vid, thanks

@@hobonickel840 The Hydrasynth is digital, it’s also quite complicated for a first synth I think, the mod matrix is very deep. I liked the sound but didn’t like sound designing on it much. For a first synth you can’t go wrong with a Microfreak. Or if you want an analogue polysynth, the Behringer Deepmind is very good value and it sounds awesome.

Nice one and thank you 🙏🏽 My Force is lightly loaded with barely anything and it’s crashing/freezing. During Lauching clips I loaded an instrument and it froze. Had to restart by doing a hard shutdown holding the power button. Maybe it may happen to others.

The most recent firmware is pretty stable, so I would say make sure you are up to date. And then go into settings and reset preferences, that can clear some of the little bugs.

Just experianced with launch the Force and audio interface set up, Presonus 1818. First looks good it worked, had all 18 Channels visible, was quite happy... The week after nothing more worked ... Force freezes at launch .. Hard shutdown was only thing helped more and launch was even after plug all stuff out not more possible.. Resetting the preferences give me a working Force back. But thats bit annoying worrying about now.. Just use it on its own now to learn it. I will later get my other stuff back on it, but I think the audio interface I not use more with the Force.

Great video! I’m using the force to sequence my synths. Kind of bummed though that I can’t add effects to the synths (like side chain) without recording the synth into the force as an audio file. Do you have any tips or ideas for this?
@MaxipokMusic
@MaxipokMusic 2 года назад
You can absolutely do that. Route the incoming audio from the synths to an audio track and just put insert effects on it like you would any other track, they work in real time. If Force doesn’t have enough inputs for each synth, you can connect a class compliant audio interface that will let you route each synth to its own track and effects.
@TheMachinesWon
@TheMachinesWon 2 года назад
@@MaxipokMusic right I do know about that aspect of doing it as an audio file. Is there another way around that? I have 6 hardware synths and just imagine six audio files and six midi files (I’m not sure if you can create groups like in ableton) but that’s a lot. What are your thoughts?
@MaxipokMusic
@MaxipokMusic 2 года назад
@@TheMachinesWon Sorry I’m not quite sure what you are asking! There isn’t a way to sequence 6 synths without 6 midi tracks. I suppose you could plug the synths into an external mixer and combine them into one audio track if it’s track count you are worried about. But then you wouldn’t be able to apply individual effects to each synth. The audio interface method works great, I’ve had 4 synths hooked up like that and routed to separate audio tracks and it worked perfectly.
@TheMachinesWon
@TheMachinesWon 2 года назад
@@MaxipokMusic sorry if I was getting wordy. Yeah I was asking if there’s a way to add effects without the audio tracks, keeping the midi. But I guess you answered that already. Yes I would want the option add individual effects vs all on one track. Is there a way to group audio midi tracks so that they share the same launch pad? So I can click one pad and it records the midi and the audio at the same time?
@MaxipokMusic
@MaxipokMusic 2 года назад
@@TheMachinesWon Ok I get you. If you press shift + long press record, a dialogue appears which gives you the option to record arm multiple tracks. With that setting you can arm all your midi and/or audio tracks, and then when you are ready to go just press the main record button and it’ll capture all the midi and audio simultaneously, so that sort of does what you want.

I like the concept of the force and the mpc's but being a daw user ( logic) I ask myself, why put myself through this much pain learning to do what i can already do in Logic ? I make my tracks, master the stems and stick them in a digital recorder for live use. What am I missing out on here by not having a Force ?

If you aren’t fussed about working away from a computer, there’s no benefit to be had from getting a Force. A DAW with access to VSTs etc will always be more flexible / powerful.
