Matt, is there adjustment instructions for bias filter. I know the manual says unless the core is moved intentionally, adjustment is not necessary. I was looking at the adjustement slots on my recent acquired Akai 635 and one of the L3 slot is broken, like chipped at the edge. I obtained this unit and seems as if someone previously tweeked around beacuse the heads were off and a lot of things were wrong. I managed to undo most of it and replaced all the 2sc458 transistors and got it working with play and recording both directions and it sound pretty good, but I'm still getting excessive noise when there is silence in between tracks when recording. Cleaned and de-mag the heads and the noise is still there. I notice this because this doesn't happen on my other R2R machines. Any ideas? Thanks and love your channel! P.S. reason I'm asking about Bias adj is because I think it was "messed with" because of the broken edge and it seems like both slots are way off pointing direction wise. Is there a way to measure, adjust this? Manual says less than -30bB with Mic, line volume at Max. How would I go about measuring this? Thanks again.

Someone doing a thorough job on caibrating reel to reels.... finally! May I ask what is that piece of machinery on top of the oscilloscope? A test meter of some kind?

Great video Matt. Shows how involved it is getting a tape machine to spec. How many transistors were changed?
@5thcomm

Thanks Mai. I've only done the preamp section so far, 16 transistors as I recall. Are you restoring one of these?
@mohsentabouna6401

I'm restoring one of these I lubed all the mecanics and changed transistors on pre amp with Toshiba 2240 units works good but I have a problem with speed, it works good then randomly wobbles and get's back to good Also on FF & FR when fast forward for long the speed goes down ( still fast but not as fast ) do you think it's the TR13 2SC2336 ? if so do you know any reliable equivalent ? Great video thanks

What kind of transistor did you use to replace the ones in the playback preamps? I had a blown xstor in a late 70s 3 motor 3 head Akai and used 2N5089s. I did another mod to increase the preamp's ability to play over-recorded tapes, too detailed an explanation for a short question. Thank you.

Hi MO, I used generic KSC1845 as replacements.

Hello Bigg Matt, I would like to ask you for help. I have a AKAI GX-747 and I have a oroblem with the sound. When I start it plays for just a little time and after that the sound start to get dusty and finally goes away. The thing is that I Live in Chile, and its been a problem to get in touch with someone who Fix Reel to Reel round here. I would really appreciate if you can help me with this, considering your fee for sure. Thanks and have a nice day

Hey Big Guy, Im working on an Akai GX-280d. Ive replaced a ton of caps, burnished relay contacts, replaced the LD3141 IC's on the playback boards, repaired a cracked connector, cleaned the heads, and did the playback head azimuth. I cant get the calibration procedures to work for calibrating the playback and record levels with a 0db calibration tape. If I dial the internal playback pots (With the volume turned all the way up like the manual says) to the 1.228 vrms the meters never get even to 0db let alone 4db like the manual calls for. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi TW, Take the reading at the output instead of the VU meters and see if you get the same levels.

Well I did something stupid. I was cleaning up and lubing a teac a-6300. Got the new belts in and lube. But I removed the idle tire solenoid without marking the position. So I put it all back together with new belts. Speed was running a tad slow. Realized I put to much weight on the idler and the tire. Moved it back but can't see to 100% match it up until the other teac I have. The service manual says I need a spring weight. But I don't have one of those. Any sugguestions on how else to check the speed? So the roller is not to tight or mostly loose?
@5thcomm
@5thcomm 3 года назад
You have a lot of leeway with that adjustment. 2 things: Make certain the plunger moves in and out of the solenoid freely (solenoid must be level. And make the solenoid is far enough back to allow the lever to travel the distance required for the pinch roller to make contact with the capstan. You may need to readjust. If the tape is not being fed through during playback, move the solenoid further back to increase pressure between the pinch roller and capstan. If the capstan is not spinning because of too much pressure from the pinch roller tobthe capstan, move thsilenoid in the other direction. A little time consuming, but not difficult. You Got This! Let me know how it goes.

@@5thcomm I don't know if it is my ears or just the difference between the 2 teac decks. But I can't tell if I still have a speed issue or just the difference between the two. I already figured out the solenoid needs to be level. I also know if I put it to close (Problem in the first place.) Runs slow. If I pull it to far back. The tape runs fast or mostly rolls of the wheel. But I think I found the sweet spot for it. Now if I can just convince myself the speed is correct. I just wish I would have marked it. Should have known better. But I don't do this all the time. My things is computer. Audio is a hobby.

@@idahofur Easiest way to tell, is play a song you're very familiar with from a pre-recorded tape. You should be able to tell right away if there is a difference.
