Schertler...as in 'shirt - ler'. I did get their magnetic pickup for steel string that has a condenser mic attached that points into the guitar box, and also a Schertler amp w/extension spkr specifically for acoustic instruments. I recently got 2 handpans, so am searching for a good contact mic. Thanks for the great review and set up procedures.
Hey, amazing review and good advice. Went ahead and bought this mic, however like some other people here, and contact mics I've tried in general, I'm having a low frequency buzzing/humming noise. Been trying with Filters and EQ to fix it, but it eats away at some of the quality of the handpan sound. Any advice here? Also the microphone seems to pick up a lot of ambient sounds such as me snapping my fingers or clapping, which is a bit worrying since then in a loud environment such as a club, it would pick up massive feedback. Can you share some thoughts on this please?
I'm not sure what to do about the noise. For a fully acoustic setting maybe they aren't the best option. I used in a very noisy indoor setting, where traditional mics were impossible to use. So any noise would have gotten lost there anyway.
@@DavidUrbanHandpan so inside in the same zones, or on the bottom outside in the same zones all does just as well? Also, I guess you can buy more of the black putty stuff when you run out hey?
@@cosmicstuff44 I havent tested the bottoms yet. but inside, on the same place works perfectly and doesn't interfere with your hands. Also you don't really lose the black stuff, you can stick it back every time with no loss. If you lose it, you can always buy from from AKG
@@DavidUrbanHandpan thanks for the response. I also found these pickups designed for handpan online, will be ordering some, they're out of Germany. Not balanced XLR, using TRS or TS plugs, but it's like a guitar etc so should be fine. I'm thinking of putting two sets of three (they come on 1, 2, 3 configs) on my handpan for stereo and these also are magnetic, no putty required. There’s a few frequencies in the higher range that sound really harsh, was that the zoom clipping or is it the mics that are not ideal for some frequency ranges? I’m asking because I’m really interested in contact mics and would love to find some for a reasonable price
You can stick it on the dome (ding) but then they pick up much less. You can also stick it on the inside, but then you have to make sure you dont hit exactly where the pickups are, because it'll redline
@@DavidUrbanHandpan great, I will try marking their locations with a little 'X' using a white grease pen, and place the mics inside the instrument under the X's. Can find x's spot by tapping with finger.
To be honest, I think it may pick it up but it will be weak. Because in the case of the handpan, the entire metal resonates, while in a Rav or tonge drum, the majority of the vibration is done by the 'tongue' , the bit stat is disconnected from the rest of the instrument (except for 1 side out of 4).
David Urban thanks, I'm actually looking at getting some pickups for my rav now. Planning on doing something similar but I really need it to be as hi-fi and accurate sounding as possible.
I do, however I did have to get one the pickups serviced, because the wire came out of the part that you stick on the handpan. First time when they 'fixed' it, it didn't work at all. So I had to go back and make them re-fix it :) Soooo make sure you get it fixed at a proper place
I haven't tried it busking, but i'm sure it works just as well, as indoors. Since you don't get any wind noise or anything into it. its pretty much a closed system.Althoug you do lose some of the quality of the sound... and by quality I mean the magic of it. I mostly used it with reverb effect
