Aki Kaurismäki - Ariel - Very Black, Dark Comedy Moment - kaurismaki 

This must be the best suicide scene I have ever seen in a film. It's dark, sarcastic and the music in the background and the 60's cafeteria make this perfectly symbolize the death or traditional countryside life in Finland and downsides of urbanization. And the monologue of the old man is great!

They're father and son in real life. Both long gone now, sadly.

Didn't even realize that the old man is the actual father of Turo Pajala, the guy playing Taisto.

One of my favourite films of all time! Discovered it when I was deep into my obsession with all things Finnish when I was about 16-17 and watched it many times since. The deader-than-deadpan performances, the locations, the music, the sparse but comic dialogue - all brought together by the master of black comedy! I've seen a good few of Aki Kaurismäki's films (none of Mika's yet, though!) and this is still my favourite. His adaptation of Crime and Punishment (Rikos ja rangaistus) is also a delight. Well, maybe not a delight exactly, but it sucks you in just like Ariel does.

watched this whole film again yesterday. brilliant 10/10 must-see masterpiece

The music in the background and lack of emotion just makes it fucking hilarious.

"The ship's called Ariel. Tonight at 10:00 off Hernesaari Point." What a masterpiece.

great how we never even see the corpse but just deduce it is there. "brevity is the soul of wit"

Kimi Räikkönen could be a character in a Kaurismäki movie... 😀
