Welcome back Akira Bike Project fans! In this video I fix more steering issues, upgrade the foot controls and foot rails and build a new metal rack for my shop.
Follow along while I'm designing and building a fully functional high performance recumbent / feet forward motorcycle inspired by Kaneda's ride in "Akira" in this ambitious motorcycle project.

I just discovered your work. It's great! i'm dreaming of this happening since I first saw Akira in theater , 30 years ago... thank you so much

I'm impressed, this is a well thought out and involved build. I bet the original animator never thought his idea would come a real bike

Thanks! Definitely trying to take advantage of what the recumbent platform has to offer, to do this right, and also do justice to Katsuhiro Otomo's vision.

I'm here because I recognized the engine from the thumbnail. My first motorcycle was a $50 cx500 parts bike

Nice! Get alot of good rides in on it? Such a unique looking engine. Check it out after the rebuild in episode 13

I’m dying to see a REAL Akira bike hit the streets. The one in Japan only went 10-15mph or something, but it looked pretty cool. Full steam ahead!

Japan has some seriously restrictive laws around custom motorcycles. If a bike is powered by a motor with a displacement greater than 250cc, it requires a a detailed legal inspection and documentation proving road worthiness (like frame strength calculations, certified inspections, etc) and motorcycles under 250cc need to be less than 2.5 meters in length. Hence all their builds are basically undersized underpowered scooters. Such a shame as there are so many great builders in Japan, but they are all seemingly crippled by these laws!

@@matus1976 Wow, I was unaware of the restrictions in Japan. I swear, I can't wait to see you finish this project, very inspiring to say the least.

Unless the primary goal of this bike is to look exactly like the Akira bike, there are tons of design and engineering flaws/inefficiencies. The best feet forward bikes to date are Dan Gurney's Alligator and Robert Horn's protoype racer. If I were doing a FFM I'd make it Gurney's layout and size, with Robert's front suspension design and the Duke 890 motor. If I had the resources to make my own engine, I'd basically make the Duke 890 engine but with the cylinders laid down near horizontally in an effort to get the output sprocket more rearward for better reach and to not have to have a chain whipping around under my thigh.

One of my favorite RU-vid updates to look forwards to, I'm caught up now, and look forwards to the next progress vid!! Beautiful work. How recent is the material in this video?

Thanks mate!! I'm glad you're enjoying it! Most of this is from 2017. We're catching up to the current day pretty quickly now.

Thanks!! I'll probably be looking at investors when my proof of concept is done, which is looking like this winter. Currently welcoming new patrons though!

Now all we need you to do is build an attack cycle from Tiberian Sun from Comand and Conquer once your Akira's bike design dominates the market.

ah that one's cool I wasn't familiar with it! enclosed recumbent with missiles, lol.

Have you considered center-hub steering for this project? Like the Malcom Newell's Voyager recombinant motorcycle, and (I think) the Lochead Quasar recombinant motorcycle.
@matus1976
@matus1976 6 месяцев назад
I have, they are interesting designs, but personally I don't think the benefit outweighs the additional complexity over a properly designed leading link front end, and you don't need to contend with bump steer.

At around 7:30, what are the whitish marks near the welds? Is that TIG welded aluminum?
@matus1976
@matus1976 2 года назад
Ah, I'm using flux core mig welding, which I use for many of my quick / tack welds. The flux core is hollow with a powdered form of shielding gas inside it, so when you weld the shielding gas powder melts then vaporizes shielding the weld from oxygen, but some of it falls and splatters around the weld. It comes off quickly and easily, but I usually leave it on as it protects the weld a little from rusting (I think it does anyway) I think the angle / lighting makes it look much more shiny than it usually is.

I'm telling you now, you're going to really regret not having any rear suspension. It's a fundamental error that will give you a lot of pain, both physical and mental, unless you're planning to ride exclusively on roads as smooth as a pool table...Your custom steering looks bloody heavy to me - and you're still steering the suspension, which is not ideal. A Hossack system would be much better if you want to stick with a fork look. Hub centre steering would be better still IMO.

Hi, thanks for your comment! If you're new to the project you probably aren't aware, this build is progressing is phases with each phase adding increased complexity to the platform. The first phase is hard-tail chain drive and is the simplest implementation to test out the general geometry and behavior. Later phases I'll add rear suspension, a new drive system, powered egress, powered foot boards, powered automatic low speed stabilization, etc. etc. I even have a 100 HP CX 650 turbo ready to go in the platform, but I'm starting out with a 45 HP CX500. I have a short video on the build phases in the channel but will be doing a more in depth one in the near future. As a prototype, it's also not going to be weight and performance optimized (hence bulky cast parts and square tubing) but once the platform is demonstrated and tested well through all the phases, I'll be redesigning and rebuilding it from the ground up integrating everything I learned and using all new high-end weight and performance optimized parts.
