Welcome Akira Bike Project and Recumbent / Feet Forward Motorcycle fans and the curious!
In this video I make great progress on the engine reduction cage, making some new tools and learning some new skills along the way!
Follow along while I'm designing and building a fully functional high performance recumbent (aka feet forward) motorcycle ready for production that is aesthetically inspired by Kaneda's ride in "Akira" in this ambitious and unique motorcycle project.

I've been following this project for like 20 years. I was in college when I first found this. Wow. Good project!

Thanks for following along for so long! Yeah it was long time ago I started this in my basement lol. Sucks how long it's taken, but things are speeding up now and it will all be worth it.

@@matus1976 I'm sure it sucks for you, but honestly this project has become a companion that I have watched for almost half my life. It's the journey, not the destination that matters. Thank you for sharing this with everybody. If I ever see you at a bar I'm buying you a beer!

Wow I remember finding out about your build something like 20 years ago when I was obsessed about the akira bike lol. Good stuff man keep it up

Ha yeah that naïve kid thought he could make it out of angle iron in his basement in a few months, lol. I never abandoned the project but life slowed it down for various reasons, full steam ahead now though with alot more capacity and skills. Glad you found the project again! Welcome back!

I have absolutely zero knowledge about engineering at all but this is impressive.

Some great precision engineering here. Which makes it all the more perplexing that you seem to have designed this machine as a hardtail, without even a millimetre of rear suspension! That's going to make for an uncomfortable ride, no matter how smooth the transmission might be...

Rear suspension, along with many other improvements, will be coming in later phases. Check out the build phases video! Phase 1 is being kept as simple as possible to start basic testing of the geometry out.

I really love how it is all coming together, how long do you think it will take before you can ride it?

Thanks!! I'm hoping to get my first test rides in late this summer!

Nice work solving all the fabrication issues that have a surfaced. Could a multigrouve V belt reduction work in your application?
@matus1976
@matus1976 Год назад
Thanks! Yeah it might be better, more efficient, but they are also wider and there isn't a lot of room there. I'm going to explore improving this after this after I get some test rides in, I all ready see many places for improvements but I don't want to get stuck in refinement purgatory.

Are those bevel gears going to be greased? If they are what's going to stop it from being flung everywhere?
@matus1976
@matus1976 Год назад
Yup, they'll be sealed and lubricated. I'll likely either do a small housing around the bevel pair or enclose the whole engine cage by adding plastic 'walls' all the way around. Still debating exactly how I'm going to implement that.

Be honest 1-10 how hard is this to actually bring to life. Huge Akira fan here!

@matus1976 11 месяцев назад
Yeah more updates coming soon! I have a few videos that are almost done, waiting on a part or final shot, and others fully filmed but requiring editing. Coming soon, eng redux cage part 3, rear hub part 1, frame jig update, exhaust fab...
