Today we are taking a look at Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira! Akira was written and illustrated by Katsuhiro Otomo and publsihed by Young Magazine in Japan, Dark Horse Comics and Kodansha in North America.
Side Note: I had to delete and re-upload this review because it was blocked in all regions due to a copyright strike. So instead of having footage of the film I had to work with what I had on hand to get the review up again.
Thank you for watching!

Thank you very much! It's kind of a mystery why the Manga isn't as popular. I think that most people don't realize that it started as a manga.

@@nativereload Berserk is another series that is amazing as well. Too bad Kentaro Miura takes such long brakes between volumes. I tend to read a comic book/manga at least once a week. @John Frum You have a very valid point, but don't you remember seeing something for the first time and being completely blown away? That was my experience. I was born 6 years after Akira was initially released, so to me, Akira is something amazing. It seemed "out of place" to me because I had never seen anything like it up until that point. I have experienced all of the things you have listed since I had first watched Akira, but Akira will always hold a special place in my heart. As for "nothing is ahead of it's time" I disagree because, maybe this might be digging deep, but Leonardo da Vinci was drawing concepts for flying machines well before the Wright brothers ever took flight. I heard they're gonna make in into a series too which'll follow the manga. Super excited to hear more about that. Good vid, thanks

Thank you very much for watching! Akira has been my favorite series for a long time. Just trying to spread the word that everyone should experience the Manga. There have been talks of a series or a movie in the works for a long, long time. I am hopeful, but never too optimistic about the whole thing.

Read Akira recently and omg, it’s a masterpiece. I can now see why lots of series’ copy a lot of its tropes, such as average joe guy meeting badass rebel girl and fighting together, the idea of rivals who were once friends and have differing ideals, psychopaths who gain unlimited power and let it get to their heads, and just the whole cyberpunk, post apocalyptic genre as a whole. I loved the romance between both Kaneda and Kei along with Tetsuo and Kaori, even if the latter’s meeting wasn’t the best of circumstances. I’m a sucker for romance, so of course seeing all the cute moments between these two pairs made me so happy. Kaori’s death was so sad and seeing Tetsuo sad about it too was such a heart-felt moment. Tetsuo is like the perfect villain, having a mixture of irredeemable and sympathetic qualities. Akira being seen as a villain is missing the bigger picture. He is just a child who doesn’t know better, and the giant nukes he causes are because of the traumatic things he goes through. This is also why Kaneda sets up the Great Akira Empire at the end, to stop these army men and scientists studying psychic children and trying to make weapons out of them. They didn’t want history to repeat itself. At least, that’s how I interpreted it. And yeah, it was as you said, the art in this series is all very well done. Everything just looks so natural and realistic. The second Akira explosion really shocked me as you see all the destruction and death caused. It is very vivid in its detail. Yeah, this was the best manga I ever read. Very surprising that it came out in 1982, years before the likes of Dragon Ball, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Sailor Moon and One Piece. Akira was manga history and anyone who is even remotely interested owe it to themselves to read this. 10/10 for me.

I just finished all 6 volumes at the beginning of this week, and I think that the Akira manga is leagues ahead of anything the movie ever tried to be. The characters have better and clearer motivations, the story is less convoluted and actually makes sense, and there's less offputting/disturbing imagery. I was also surprised to meet new characters that didn't even show up in the film, or at the very least had inconsequential roles. I was able to get attached to the characters in the manga, where I couldn't at all in the film. Though there are 5 or 6 little groups of people you have to keep track of by the end of the story, I didn't have too hard of a time following what was going on. The themes were a lot more fleshed out as well. Definitely one of my favorite mangas now.
@ZombeeJohnny
@ZombeeJohnny 2 года назад
It's a great read! The film is more of an animated marvel in comparison to its writing and script. The Manga was able to flesh out the story more because there was a little more freedom on how much detail Otomo was allowed to put into it. The film is more or less a showcase of new and exciting animation techniques for Japanese animated film.

I finished reading Akira right now, it's one of my favourite mangas now. The only things I "criticize" are the characters (I think they're good, but they could have been waaaay better if the pacing slowed down a bit at times, and I would have preferred that the friendship-rivalry between Tetsuo and Kaneda was more fleshed out) and the beginning of the story, I never really liked how Kaneda got involved in all the anti-government stuff. I also think that Otomo could have explained better some things regarding the psychic power, but still, it's a masterpiece

@@neonthunder3261 You are exactly right. I feel like there was just a certain charm to early dub anime. Some of it was god awful, but most of the time they were superb. @bucket7081 Год назад

@bucket7081 Год назад
If i buy the DBZ and the DB box set it would cost 260 overall for both and then on top of that I would have to go out and get the singles for Dragon ball super. @ZombeeJohnny
@ZombeeJohnny Год назад
@@bucket7081 I agree as well. The Akira box set is something I can't see being reprinted multiple times so it will grow more collectible over time. DB and DBZ on the other hand will be printed until the end of time. Don't forget there is also the VIZBIG versions of DB and DBZ which are 3-in-1 volumes printed in a larger format and they run for a fairly reasonable price. They are also printed with a higher quality paper than regular manga.

can someone explain in book 2 the spy helps kaneda and kei to escape in the hospital in the van, but at the boom gate the guard looks at the back of the van and nothing is there so how did he sneak out kei and kaneda, becuase nexr you see then at keis aunts place, its bothering me
@ZombeeJohnny
@ZombeeJohnny 4 года назад
This is a fairly long winded explanation so bare with me. During this page Kaneda, Kei and the Spy are running through the hallways to escape, then the scene changes back to the children. It's seems that the scene changed so that Otomo didn't have to depict Kaneda and Kei's escape and where they hid in the van. This is used frequently in books, comic books and film and it's called a "scene transition" or "scene break". This is used to make the writing of the story easier. If you think about it, this scene could have potentially been 5 or 6 more pages and that means: more writing, more planning, more thumbnails, more penciling and more inking. So Otomo used these scene transitions to save on time and save on him illustrating them getting into the van and hiding. You kind of have to use your imagination in this part and dream up how they got themselves into the van and where the hid. *For reference this is Akira Book 2 page 138 to page148.

Yes in the film they kind of glossed over it and cut the scene as Tetsuo was killing Yamagata. I feel it was an easy way around the big epic clash between the biker gangs, Tetsuo and the Army. 4/10 Manga. The only reason that the score is that high is thanks to the finely crafted graphical elements. Everything else is disgracefully poor, only good enough to satisfy the bare minimum required of the medium. The characters are sub-one-dimensional and mostly unlikable, with some being so devoid of substance and meaningful agency that they are barely more than plot devices. A concerning portion of the dialogue is just characters yelling each other's names, the rest nothing more than a utilitarian means of moving the plot along. The plot itself is just a mess, meandering and unfocused from start to finish. Akria may be an influential manga and a visually impressive work in its own right, but it most certainly is not a well-made story. Essentially, its 2000~ pages of thinly justified chase-scenes, screaming, violence, and miscellaneous chaos.
@ZombeeJohnny
@ZombeeJohnny 2 года назад
You are definitely not wrong. Most of my score is based on the Manga as a piece of art and not a marvel of writing. The story is just a place holder for Otomo's artistic work. Even in his other works in the film industry he mainly focused on story stories and directing. His strongest suit is his imagination and his work as an artist and it seems it has always been that way. Thanks for watching!
