All of México is crying right now. DBZ was arguably bigger in México than Japan. Even non anime fans hold it in high regard. Grown adults ranging from doctors and lawyers to rappers and adult film stars many 90s and 2000s kids had DBZ in their homes.

YOU BLEW MY MIND AWAY when you told me about him doing the art work in Dragon Quest, over here in America it's known as "Dragon Warrior", that's up until the "music band" named "Dragon Quest" fizzled out, and then it was ALL called Dragon Quest!!!!! Those are some of my older brother's, and my FAVORITE GAMES of ALL TIME 😊😉!!!!!!!!! Then you bring up "Chrono Trigger", then I REALLY LOST MY $H!T 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!!!!!!!!!! I had NO IDEA, he done all those GREAT THINGS!!!!!!! Thanks Dash 😊!!!!!!!!!!!

Japanese morning anime shows can sometimes be accused of having no real messages for children. Pokemon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh, were all shaped around continuous consumerism for the product. If there was one positive message I took away from DB is a pretty common trope that they popularised by turning every opponent into an ally. He does this throughout the series with the exception of The Red Ribbon Army and Toa Pei Pei until he faces Frieza. That's why Frieza is such an important villain because he represents that some people can not be convinced, converted, humbled. Some people must be defeated. But I always found that feature of the series to be it's strongest aspect. Seeing all the Z warriors in that intro all lined up knowing that almost all the Z fighters fought Goku, lost, and became his ally, is one of the coolest things about the show.

Dude! So many fans out there saying a quick memory of growing up and sadness but moving on quickly or a long video that sounds like they are just using his passing for content. You on the other hand made such a heartfelt video in a few minutes. You're the most true fan non-fan ever. You have my undying respect. I actually got into his work by seeing Chrono Trigger artwork in Nintendo Power. That game looked so amazing and I begged for it so much, my family bought me 2 copies by mistake just in case they forgot. It's still my favorite game of all time these many years later. Just a year or two after I saw someone with a figure of a kid with a tail and I said, tell me more. I was hooked and became one of the biggest fans. I literally have a personalized plate on my car that is DBZ related and love getting those occasional thumbs up or nods from strangers in the know. He will continue to inspire for many decades to come and not many get to say that after their gone. RIP Toriyama

I am from Germany. 2 years ago I have started watching Dragon Ball. Prior to that I have only heard about it from friends. Suddendly I decided for myself just to start watching it, since I felt like I was missing out on something. And I was correct. I was hooked instantly. Since then I have seen all the shows (including DBZ Abridged by TeamFourStar) and the movies. It became one of my favourite things in my life. It's truly amazing and beautiful, how somebody following their passion can impact the lives around them.

I'm from Germany and remember back in the early 2000s all of my classmates were into Dragonball. We drew the characters in art class (even if it didn't fit the subject) and at home. I think I got about 600 pages of drawings from that time. I never really became a manga fan but Dragonball and therefore Mr. Toriyama created so many memories I will cherish forever. I have great memories of coming home from school and watching DBZ on Toonami (which was part of Cartoon Network) back in the day. Who else remembers being disappointed so many times when after Goku landed on Namek and defeated Recoome, and was about to fight Burter and Jeice, then the next day they played the first episode with Raditz landing on Earth! 😩 But then finally they dubbed the rest of the Namek/Freeza saga! And we got to at last see those great episodes, including Goku transforming into a Super Saiyan! EPIC!!!

I also never watched even a second of Dragon Ball till 2 years before when I was in my 30s so it's not my nostalgia speaking. I liked it very much the original, Z Kai (the original Z drags a lot sometimes) and even Super especially Zamasu arc. GT was crap to be honest but Z Kai from the beginning till the Cell arc is 10/10 anime for me.

I remember as a kid my dad and I had a really hard time finding things we had in common, he was my dad and I was his son of course, but most of the things I liked were children's shows and Barney is INCREDIBLY grating to anyone above 10. When DragonBall and DragonBall Z were on though, it was something that really bridged a gap and helped us share wonderful moments. Every new episode we'd sit down together (him with a beer, me with a chocolate milk) and just enjoy the fights and the story. Even today my dad and I still enjoy the Dragon Ball Z Abridged series. Those bonding moments are some of the most significant in my life and I doubt we'd be as close without Akira Toriyama.

It opened the door to anime in the west. It was that important franchise that made it mainstream. Even if Toriyama wasn't aware of it, he was the Stan Lee of manga/anime. Also, even if you don't like Dragon Ball, all shounen manga are very influenced by it. If you like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail, Black Cover or even One-Punch Man, they wouldn't exist without Dragon Ball. The most important thing for many of us it was a charismatic and cool story to follow every day about awesome action and adventure that teached us since we were kids to believe in justice, trying to be a better person and always improve, even if you lose. Now we have thousands of similar shows, but it is because DB is their role model.

Bleach Creator, Tite Kubo, Shares Tribute to Akira Toriyama - "It would be strange to write a diary without mentioning this, so I'll just talk about something serious". "Personally, I don't feel any loneliness or pain. I'm not saying there aren't any at all, but there aren't as many as I thought. It's the death of someone I've read since I was a child, someone who works in the same magazine as me, and someone I'm deeply influenced by, so it feels different than when I deal with death in general, but that's why I feel like it doesn't exist." "I've never really talked about this with anyone, but I've always believed that creating things means expanding your sensibilities and expanding your life. This is because I believe that as long as the work exists, the author is not dead. And I believe that being able to properly get used to this feeling is proof of the magnitude of the work's existence that remains in my heart."

Oda's thoughts on the sudden loss of Toriyama: [From Comic Book Resources, translated official One Piece Reddit] forum Oda's statement into English. It is too early. The hole is too big. Sadness washes over me when I think that I will never see him again. I have admired him so much since I was a child, so I remember the day he called me by name for the first time. On the way home from the day you used the word "friend" for me and Kishimoto, I remember being overjoyed with Kishimoto. I also remember the last conversation we had. I was one of those who took the baton from the days when reading manga made you a fool, and he also created an era when both adults and children could enjoy reading manga. He showed us the dream that manga can go worldwide. It was like watching a hero going forward. For not only mangakas but also creators in various industries, the excitement and emotion of the time of Dragon Ball serialization must have taken root in their childhood. His existence is like a big tree. For the manga artists of our generation who stood on the same stage, Toriyama's works became more and more important to me as I got closer to the same stage. I even felt being scary. But I am just happy to see the aloof man himself again. Because we love him on a blood level. With respect and gratitude for the creative world he has left behind. I pray for his soulful rest in peace. May heaven be the joyous world he envisioned.

Man, I've never been a big Dragonball fan, but I did watch occasionally. When Toriyama passed away, I felt everyone's pain. It was so easy to empathize. Then it started hitting me. Without Toriyama, I likely wouldn't have gotten a ton of stories that I love. Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece, Naruto, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and other anime wouldn't have broken through to US. And the US got influenced with things like Teen Titans and Avatar. Toriyama moved mountains. And yeah, everyone knows Kamehameha and Spirit Bomb (so much so that autocorrect capitalized them lol)

It was Dragon Ball Z on Cartoon Network in the early 2000's. A couple years after I first saw the show, I was in a Borders store and I saw the manga section for the first time. I saw kid Goku and Shenlong on the spine art and I thought, "that is so cool". I had no idea the cartoon was based on a comic book. I bought the first few volumes and devoured them. Then I found the entire DB anime online and started from Episode 1. I cracked open my Volume 3 last week after hearing about Toriyama's death, and re-read the first training arc. When Goku and Krillin put on their orange Gi's for the first time at the Budokai, I started to cry. So many treasured memories of this series.

Chrono Trigger was not only my introduction to Toriyama, but also is what got me into RPGs in the first place. I tried playing other RPGs like Final Fantasy 6 (or 3 as it was in the U.S.) but I couldn't understand what was going on. Chrono Trigger having the enemies on the map and not switching to a different screen for battles was easier to get into, plus the story was just a lot of fun. He also worked on Tobal No.1 and Tobal 2, which are my favorite 3D fighters. I just loved how the characters and monsters looked.

You were right on the money around the 1:00 mark. You could show damn near any single frame from an episode of Dragon Ball or DBZ/Kai and most casual anime viewers would instantly think "Dragon Ball", even if it was just a shot of the background with none of the main characters in view. The art style is so distinctive. Might as well leave my condolences on here too. Thank you very much, mr. Toriyama, for the world and characters you created

Speaking of Kai, if you've never watched DBZ and would like to dip in, IMO Kai is a great way to start watching. They trimmed off almost all (if not 100%) of anime filler from the original anime series, which condenses the series a lot. And for the better - it's closer to the original manga run. Although there was one good filler episode in DBZ, and I think most fans who watched the original show will know which episode I mean :DDD

My best childhood fan was already a huge DragonBall fan and by the time the anime series DragonBall Z were aired in Denmark were I’m from, he introduced me to the broader universe of DragonBall; so while I was watching DBZ and maybe not get all the context for the story right away, I got to catch up by reading the earlier volumes. I guess DragonBall was my main entrance to manga and anime along with Pokémon as that was coming out during my childhood as well as some early VHS releases of Silver Fang which I saw at an earlier age where I had NO business watching something so violent 😂 but with all that said, even though I might consider myself a casual fan, I too feel the great loss of Akira Toriyama, as he defined an entire generation of Westeners who were probably getting into anime partly because of him (I guess the other half was due to Sailor Moon, but I digress). RIP Akira Toriyama and thank you for everything ❤

My FIRST ever intro to his work was and will ALWAYS be CHRONO TRIGGER! DragonBallZ was 2nd & I used to be up @2am to watch it on some Canadian broadcast. Then moving to the US, Cartoon Networks TOONAMI, everyday @5pm!

I'm not sure what actually got me into DBZ. I know my brother watched it on TV but I didn't watch it with him. 10 or so years later I started buying all the episodes on DVD.

In 1994, my friends popped in a subtitled DBZ VHS movie and since then, it became a weekly watch as a group (we had a Japanese video rental shop in downtown Honolulu so we rented every series). Eventually, it started coming up on Cartoon Network dubbed…. But I couldn’t watch it as I was so used to the original voice acting…. And to this day, I can’t watch DB/DBZ/DBGT/DBZS dubbed …. Anyway, RIP Toriyama Akira 🙏

I got into Dragon Ball with the original Dragon Ball and of cause Dragon Ball Z. They were shown on the public service channel in my country, but they seemed very inconsistent and would repeat a lot. I remember recording the Frieza battle on VHS. Sadly I don't have a working VCR anymore... F. All of Dragon Ball has been a huge part of my life and I'm really sad to see such a legendary man leave. May he rest in peace.

I started with Dragon Ball Z, watching Saturday morning cartoons on channel 11 on the WB. I’ve seen most of the series still need finish Dragon Ball Super. The OG Dragon Ball series is my favorite though.

My first anime was Dragon Ball. I saw it on TV at 6 o’clock Saturday morning. I do not remember what channel but it was in LA. I want to say it was on UPN but I really cannot remember. It was in the 90s.

RIP Akira Toriyama. He was one year younger than myself. And I am so cool with watching and reading this type of incredible work. The amount of ole school CD's from Japan. or go to a ole school ComicCon. NYC in October 2024 will be hosting. How did I get into this? 1969 High School Debate conference at a hotel in NYC. 2day event. Holy Cow BATMAN. yep that is what I saw in one of the hall ways of the hotel. Comic characters from comics, movies and Sunday papers. Dude that blew my mind. I ended up hanging in the area of the ComicCon groups, and got invited to sit in the off the main floor Talks. It is so amazing on how the evolution of this event has grown from my first time being at one. ✌

I enjoy the original dragon ball alot more than Z , or any of the series that followed . I think without Akira Toriyama. The wests obsession with anime , manga and Japan as a whole would be nowhere near as pervasive as it is today. RIP
