I grew up in the same city as Akon. I looked up to him as a teenager. I am now a high school teacher in New York City. I am appalled by the glamorization and normalization of these crimes. Imagine taking a vehicle away from a mother who has a child with an emergency. The real man is the man who works hard and wakes up everyday to provide for his family. We need to condemn this shit. The way I remember this story is.... He was 15 or 16 years old and him and his friend stole one car and got caught in Georgia. The judge initially gave him 5 years in jail but the judge didn't want to keep him locked up for 5 years away from his family in New Jersey so after one year he let him go free thinking that he would return to New Jersey and his family but he didn't want to go back. Akon stayed in Georgia with his friends family and started committing bigger crimes.... He was the youngest kid to be placed in an adult jail for Grand theft auto in Georgia, hence the nickname "convict" was bestowed by other inmates...

Akon is a true business man and hustla!
