While the calendar merely flipped to February, soon March Madness will be taking over with conference tournaments, NCAA Tournament brackets, upsets and Cinderella stories - the Akron Zips men’s basketball team hopes to be a part of all the fun.
On Sunday evening, Akron head coach John Groce and senior standout Enrique Freeman stopped by WKYC Studios, joining 3News Sports Anchor Nick Camino on ‘Sports Tonight.’
After a 77-70 victory over Toledo on Friday night in front of a nationally televised audience, the Zips shot to the top of the Mid-American Conference in first place with a record of 9-1. Overall the Zips are 17-5 on the season and have big goals once the regular season wraps up in a month.
Tuesday night, Akron finds themselves in another battle for first place in their conference when unheralded Central Michigan visits the JAR.
Groce, Freeman and Camino talked about everything from Freeman’s Cleveland roots, to the Zips’ season thus far, as well as the MAC Tournament at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse and the NCAA Tournament.
