It always drove me crazy that they implied this song was 1928 in the movie when it was actually recorded in 1934! If you know music well, jazz of 1928 had a much different style.

In 1956 I was 10 years old and found a copy of the then brand new book "The Fabulous Phonograph" at our public library. A few weeks later I begged my father to take me to our local Salvation Army Store to see if we could find an old wind up phonograph. Did we find one!! You bet! It was a Victor Orthophonic, model 8-12 as is playing in this video. It was in mint condition and full of late 1920's Victor dance records. The price?? Eat your heart out! $7.00!! I still have it in my collection. But now I have 30'000 78 RPM records - quality stuff - in my collection - here at the mental institution! (Kidding)

This song was featured in “The Shining”. I checked Discogs that there were none available. And on eBay, they sold it for $510. This is going to be very expensive. Either that, or I have to get a vinyl LP that contains this song.

Tyler hi, I clean my 78's with a small drop of Palmolive anti bacterial dish liquid, I have a soft brush. I fill a tub with warm water, and take the soft brunch and move in a circular motion with the soapy warm water, then rinse, and dry with a soft cotton cloth. The brush gets in the grooves well and gets rid of all the old grim, cig smoke and junk, mKe a huge difference. Just be careful of the labels My lp's i do the same thing only I uses my finger tips to clean those no brush, and rinse and dry. I been doing this 26 years and I have cleaned thousands of records :)

You know, all the modern CD releases of this recording feature the version processed for Kubrick's film--there's this mysterious sounding hollow echo added to the vocals. I really wanted to hear the original record to know if it was recorded that way--I was sure it was not! but wanted to be certain. Yep, it wasn't. This sounds so much better!

The 24700 Victor now tops $300. to purchase when you can find one. After downloading the song I had it copied onto a 78 to play on my Wurlitzer. Cost was $115 for both sides - did the Andrew's Sisters Bugle Boy on the reverse. Not cheap but a clean copy for less than an original.

Your player is going a bit fast for this song, assuming Kubrick had it on the money for the movie. It should be roughly a semitone lower. This does almost perfectly match how the song sounds when The Shining is played in Europe on TV due to the speedup to match the frame rate, though.
