This is just an incredible performance. Can you imagine Al Green lip-synching? Auto-tune for Al Green? Of course not. He's one of the greatest of all time.
When he was invited on Soul Train after a few hits and appearances, he refused unless he could appear with a live band . He hated when he lip synced earlier because he believed singing live separated the talent from the overhyped auto tune crowd. He was right !
If Al Green would give this performance today it would bring the house down. Such heart and soul just sinks into your bones, the emotion and soul is crazy !
Actually the vast majority of broadcasts in music they all lip sync and played along with their record and mimed their instruments. Only one or two shows featured a real performance.
I'm a preacher and he still is my all time favorite singer. I've been listening to him through my mother and stepmother since I was 9 or 10 years old. I'm 57 now.
Happy 76th Birthday today April 13, 2022 to the great Al Green, born April 13, 1946. Al Green is one of the most enduring soul singers of the rock era, and is considered by many the most important male singer since Sam Cooke. He has also been referred to as "The Last of the Great Soul Singers." His early 70s work on Hi Records sounds as good today as it did then, and his legend has continued to grow over the past quarter century even as he generally turned his back on popular music. Green is the winner of 11 Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also received the BMI Icon award and is a Kennedy Center Honors recipient. He was included in the list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, ranking at No. 65, as well as Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Singers, at No. 14 as per their December 14, 2023 list.
@@frederickballentine6558 Rolling Stone's list of the 100 best singers of all-time includes some of the greatest vocalists in the history of recording. These top singers of all time range from rock to blues to soul and even pop music, and this list is a round-up of some of the greatest singers ever to approach a microphone. Their list, as of December 14, 2023, listed Al Green as #14 (There are different lists, such as Billboard's and so on)
all the classic artists sound better live in their prime than the studio versions. true talent. But i will say i like the Tired of Being Alone record better, but this is version refreshing. especially the "writing down things" where he self references Love and Happiness 👍
I wouldn't say he is underated. He is internationally known as one of the great legends of Soul music. He still sells out concerts all around the world after more than 40 years in the industry, so even if the kids today aren't bumping all his classics on their ipods, his musical legacy is secure.
The fact that people generally consider John Lennon as clearly superior to Al Green musically is evidence that he is still underrated. Your point is well received though, we’re talking about a multi-Grammy award winner widely recognized as probably in the top 100 singers of all time
As A 70's baby I didn't appreciate when my mom had her get togethers blasting this music while I was trying to watch T.V in my room! But now im in my late 40's blasting this on my patio like these albums just came out!
Sharp, smooth, and sexy as hell. Some people have a God given talent that raises the hair on the back of your neck and forms a lump in your throat.. this is it. God bless
No one can touch Mr Al Green when it comes to soul music...man is on fire and blessed with the holy spirit!! and I say that as an atheist..will and have always loved this man and his music!
Not one damn thing compares to this. I'm a white boy from the deep south and a conservative without a racist bone in my body. This man is unequaled in his soul, power, passion and delivery of a great song.
Al Green is a Minister of Music, Although he sung R&B he never lost his spiritual roots in his music as he sang about love. I love his music and will always listen to his songs in generations to come...
I will not get into today's secular music scene. They a hot flamin' electronic soul-less MESS. I jam Gospel. Al Green and some other soul groups from time to time.
Was such an experience to see this man in 1973, 13 yr. old white girl with her dad and I was absolutely spellbound! And had feelings I had never felt before.. amazing!
Old School Music, ONLY the pro's #KNOWS about mic techniques in studios & live performances. Al Green is a certified PRO! And, he's my "Dream Duet"!! I Love his music. ☆☆☆☆♡♡♡♡
This is the first song I heard from Al Green!! I have loved his music ever since. Simply Beautiful is one my favorites. I have an Album by Queen Latifah and they do that song together. It is Bad! I mean the good bad!!!
There's Only One Word to Describe AL GREEN...CHOSEN.And when You're Chosen There's nothing you can do about it but Do His Will.Spread the Word through Love Song as Guided by The Holy Spirit. My Favorite part of ALs' Live Performance is When The Holy Spirit take over He use every muscle in His Body to not Dance. My Favorite AL GREEN Song My Favorite Version..YOU'RE EVERYTHING TO ME..YOU'RE EVERYTHING...Love&Peace
I remember when Al was new.......and the excitement that a singer in the Otis tradition had arrived......the critics were over the top in singing his praises....and what do you know.....they were right. Cause he's still here doing it. Go Al Green!!!!
+Rok Fish My man that album in your picture is one of hell of a album, one of my favorites next to "what's the story? (morning glory)",well damn that shows you got good taste in music man! :P
What a man What a unique singer, expressions in his voice as well as his face. you don't get many to a pound nowadays. this guy is exceptional. Talk about getting into your heart this man is a music surgeon .
The people in the audience saw a performance for the ages. It's awesome just watching it here on RU-vid, but could you imagine what it must have been like to be sitting in that audience in 1973??? Amazing.
god this make me think of high school lol i got my frist kiss to this song because i sang it to her lol but i didn't sound as good as him lol thank god for al green

One of my favorite videos on RU-vid. The most bluesy & down home version of this classic. From the classic pbs show "SOUL", the jolly green giant channels his inner Bobby Bland at around 4:40. This lyrical letter to the great singer Laura Lee- serves as the begging man's anthem as much in 2018 as it was in 1971.
