Not everyone lives near fields. We've been pushing home ownership for so long, accompanied with white flight, that much of the working farmland around most major cities has been developed and destroyed. I built and ran a small vegetable farm outside of a small city during the noughts and 4 years in the land I was leasing was sold for development...that ultimately would not happen with the housing bubble burst. We should be encouraging new small, organic family farms, not crappy jobs on big industrial farms. But this takes some education; sustainable organic farming doesn't come with instructions on the label.

I work in West Texas , The Permian Basin , “Oil Field” . You will not see one white Rig hand working on the “Pulling Unit Rigs .” They dont like working in hot weather , freezing weather . Many workforces that are extremely tough like construction are also predominantly Mexican. I myself have had 2 seperate positions in life that I outworked all the whites within a few weeks of showing up. Its 2 completely different levels of work ethic and entitlement.

I worked along side some of the toughest hard working white boys I have ever met in my life while serving in the Army and time in Iraq. Some that even worked like a "Mexican" as we joked about, myself being of Mexican descent. The same goes for strawberries and blueberries. All types of nuts are easy to automate because they can be shaken from a tree or dug out of the ground. Again, Americans dont want to do these types of job unless its sitting in a nice comfortable truck that they can manually operate.

I was born and raised in lower southeatern Alabama, it don't get any more country than where I live. I've only left the state a handful of times on vacation, these folks are what I know and love. Mike Bird thats funny cause tainted food, product breakdown, recalled, etc. are usually caused by poor factory conditions or fault of the factory workers, where the workers are typically not immigrants. And crop disease is usually started by genetics and nature, not typically man

Check fda, and 150 years before Reagan imported cheap labor, only 2 cases ever, since then, over 300 food products a year are tainted and needs recalled, 98% from food processing plants, or farms hiring illegal immigrants...some cases, it is the fault of those hiring cheap labor, when they don't provide sanitary conditions,, ( lack of portable toilets, giving them bathroom breaks, supplying water, soap, and clean towels, ect) but sometimes it's because they don't clean-up, or just don't care.... check out the REAL FACTS, so you don't look so stupid, when you try to make people believe in your fairytales....
Mike Bird its actually not always vegetables or meat. In the past few years there was actually a salmonella outbreak stemming from a peanut butter factory, due to them ignoring their product testing positive by the lab for salmonella, just so they could sell more product. Their factory was worked by american citizens, but was filthy with rats, rodents etc. I believe at least 5 people died from that. It was the factory’s fault not the peanut farm’s fault. The peanuts and a large majority of produce is washed in the factories to insure these things don’t happen. Fresh produce may be contaminated at any point along the farm to table continuum. Yes there are farms where the contamination stems from illegal workers not washing hands but to solely blame them is ridiculous, Americans can be held just as responsible and the companies just don’t really care about consumer health if they could get away with it
I think they are the lazy career welfare folks. Nobody want's jobs that will keep them working in the 90+ degree heat, bent over all day knowing they will be hurting the next day, actual good old fashion work. These are the "I think I'm worth more than minimum wage" people. Face it America, immigrants are not taking our jobs, they are doing jobs people don't want. It's hard work and the pay sucks.

Even $10 an hour is too low for many Americans to consider back breaking labor. We would have to return to Great Depression era conditions for people to do that in large numbers.
Not every American is lazy. If I was still in my teenage years and someone offered me this employment I would have taken it without a second thought. I grew up in the city so we didn't have this, so I worked at Wendy's instead. But I will make one of my future children work like this for their money if I can't find them a job anywhere else. So they can learn discipline, responsibility and the value of hard work.
This is coming from a young man living in Alabama what he says is around 80-90% correct after the governor made a bill to stop hiring illegals the prices of vegetables and other goods skyrocketed due to the lack of workers and high demand not to mention that the farmers lost more than they won due to the high wage Americans asked for. The result is catastrophic for both Americans and farmers
Any person that enters the country illegally should be denied citizenship permanently. We don't have to stop eating. We have millions of people out of work. People that could be picking vegetables.

I used to manage a grocery store for a local chain. We had quite a few migrant farm workers coming in to cash their checks so they could buy food. The bigger checks were several hundred dollars and approaching $1000. I've looked at different check stubs since they handed everything to me for me to sign off that it is okay to cash the check. Some workers were paid hourly and they put in a lot of hours each week. The piece meal paid workers still earned at least a few hundred dollars. This is after all the deductions.
We need to bring back chain gangs and get prisoners to do the work for cheap. A couple months doing that kind of back breaking work will either set them straight so they don't ever want to go back to prison, give them valuable labor skills they can leverage into jobs when they get out and/or give them a sense of fulfillment so they choose to work the fields full time when they get out.
Valuable labor skills? What...? Can you do me a favor? Look around your house, find the heaviest object you can pick up without hurting yourself, then pick that item up and put it down for about 8 hours. Come back and tell me what valuable skill you were just trained in.

my grandfather and uncles crossed the border into Arizona, back in 1997. They were offered a job by a farmer to harvest vegetables, since no american was willing to work under the sun, getting their hands and clothes dirty. My grandfather and uncles took the offer regardless of the pay and working condition.
