Alabama seniors arrested for feeding local stray cats 

A state with some of the worst public education, lowest literacy rates, and high rates of poverty is, of course, going to have frivolous issues such as this.

Well, she was obviously a danger to the trooper arresting her. I mean, don't the police have the right to get home safely?

Happy pets, at any age if you take a swing at a police officer there is no excuse for it.

A heartless one. They need to begin psych testing anyone wanting to be in law enforcement.It’s doubtful they’ll do it (nation wide) but they should.

Come on. They were given warnings for trespassing and made the choice to remain on the property. Illegal Choices = potential legal Consequences.

I agree and uncalled for, A TNR program in that area is a good solution and does work. Any kittens found are easy to place in rescues to rehab and rehome and it cost the city nothing but a few minutes of time talking to the cat rescues, Humane society and any other animal welfare groups working to fix this to just set up specific areas to feed and set live traps and let people from those groups have some of their members there on site to watch the traps. To spay and neut.(all animals that go through this program also get a full set of shots as well) also doesn't cost the city any money since these groups use donations to pay for them and the vet's involved do it pro bono as a service to the community.. That's how we have been dealing with this issue in MI for years now, we talk to local officials first though to explain how TNR program works etc.. haven't had one say no to the program yet. Make your voices heard and contact the office of Alabama AG and AL Republican Governor Kay Ivey (who is also a senior citizen) about this case and how a TNR program is a good solution and to work with the rescue groups and allow them access to any problem areas with stray/feral dog and cats.

Now with this one leaves me with a ? Mark cause this is a confusing law especially in America oh wait nevermind cause a female was arrested for feeding the homeless people only in America lol

Unfortunately they were trespassing private property, I feed stray cats and do TNR, but I have been lucky to be warned first not to feed on certain areas, what I do is transfer the cats to other areas by training them to follow the food. That is sad, we do so much to minimize the feral cat population and look what happens.

@@scottmonty1828 Wow, you are correct, they probably have charged them with a provision ; I understand is some type of trespass ordinance of "distraction of public property", maybe a park, every state, city's rules are different.

I don’t feed them.

I used to live in Montgomery, which sits next to Wetumpka, and I fed neighborhood strays for years, took in several, and got them all spayed and neutered. There was a colony living behind a nearby shopping center, and a cadre of good people were feeding them. I was going to TNR them, but then I moved out of state. It's happened here too. I seem to become the cat person wherever I go.

Yeah, it's political. What they say is the law is the law, and the questionable constitutionality of it doesn't matter to the judge. And a lot of people who invoke religion in politics aren't to be trusted. They use religion to shield fascism.

The city won't change. It's Wetumpka. I finally left Alabama, Montgomery in particular, in 2018, and haven't looked back.

No that’s very cruel. Think about the world she releases that animal to. Its full of dangerous hazards for cats cars being the main one. Also consider that these animals have no opportunity for upward mobility they aren’t going to get their act together one day and be a normal cat. Feral cats are better off dead than living that miserable existence.

Police will always defend their actions no matter how evil. To do otherwise could bring liability to the department and they know it. So they don't side with the public they couldn't care less about the public, they only care about protecting their jobs.

The crime level there is actually pretty high. I’d say majority of it is drug related. They are known for their amount of arrests. Everyone around here jokes that if you are going to get arrested its in that county. So sad how these ladies were treated & I’m glad it is gaining media attention.

I can’t get over this. I live in Orange County, CA where I know of many feral populations are fed on city property. It’s shocking to see an 85 year old arrested for feeding cats.

The women got $86,000 in a Gofundme money. That should be able to pay for an expensive lawyer who would be able to get all those charges off their record. They have to fight this. It's unacceptable.
