About the explanation of the Philippine Languages by the professor, he was just saying in general that the Philippine languages must be called languages and not dialects because languages are spoken by a great number of people. He's setting an example like a Hilagaynon speaker cannot understand an Ilocano speaker when they talk to each because these two are separate languages and they don't share any mutual origin of the language. He also emphasized that a dialect is only spoken by a certain number of ethnic groups, even if the intonation or stress of the words are different but at least they can understand each other. This is the reason why the Philippines have a national language because Filipinos can't understand each other if they speak their own language, like a Tagalog speaker cannot understand an Ilocano speaker. For example: What are you doing? (English) Ano ang ginagawa mo? (Tagalog) Anya iti ub-ubraim? (Ilocano) Now, you see the difference. Tagalog and Ilocano are completely different from each other.

I am from Cagayan valley .. majority of us speak ILOCANO.. but within our province we use two other dialects the Itawes and Ibanag... These are the 3 major dialects we use... It’s like the word ‘KITA’. In tagalog it has 2 different meanings: Kita(seen/visible) , kita(salary). In hiligaynon the word ‘KITA’ has a lot of meaning combined with how Tagalog people call it like kita(we), kita(seen), kita(salary) and they are pronounced different.
The latter part says that these Filipino Language are languages in their own right and not a mere dialect. First, we don't have a single unified language, tagalog or Filipino is just one of the many languages we speak in these islands. So the professor explains that all of them should be considered a kind of language separate from tagalog or Filipino as they are not a sub-dialect or variant of it but rather their pwn specific language in their own right and is significantly different :)

I think i understand what you're trying to say with different use of words. Correct me if i'm wrong tho. Ex: In European Portuguese a dog is a called a "cão." The word cão exists in Spanish as "can." But it is rarely used except in a biology context. They say "perro." Also, in Brazil, cão is not super common. Well, maybe in certain parts. I dunno. They generally use "cachorro," which in Spanish means puppy. I'm not sure if or how it's used in Euro Portuguese. Maybe it's used for puppy? Chime in if you know. Another example: "Morar"-->"to live (in a dwelling)" in both languages but it is never used in Spanish, at least as far as I know. So these examples of particular words being vastly different among these languages might not be an accurate indicator of how different these languages are from each other because one language might technically have the word in their dictionary but it's hardly ever used or completely obsolete. But in another language they might use the term regularly. Also, sometimes Spanish and Portuguese have the same word but it means different things. Ex: Brincar in Spanish means "to jump." In Portuguese it means "to play." You can see that they possibly have a common root because jumping is an action that is often done when playing. But the word in each language evolved differently. It's the same for Philippine languages and languages in general. Sometimes we have the same word but it means different things Ex: Ant in Cebuano is Hulmigas. Ant in Tagalog is Langgam. But langgam in Cebuano is bird. However, "hulmigas" or "amigas" (not to be confused with "amiga" which is female friend in Cebuano) is from the Spanish word "hormigas." There is a word "mangmang" which is listed in the Cebuano dictionary as "ant." Mangmang (which is an insult swear in Tagalog meaning idiot), sounds vaguely like langgam. So possibly "langgam" in Tagalog and "mangmang" in Cebuano have the same root. But i've NEVER heard it used for ant in Cebuano. Ive only ever heard Cebuano speakers use it when they're mixing Tagalog and Bisaya (Cebuano). A funny one between Tagalog and Cebuano is "Libog." In Cebuano it means confused, but in Tagalog it means horny. LOL. Also, Hubog in Cebuano means drunk but in Tagalog it means shape.
An example of a confusing word. Karon in hiligaynon means Later but it means now in Bisaya. It's funny when our relatives from other regions gather. We always have to clarify Karon, now or later? We messed up a meeting time once, lesson learned.
I speak both Hiligaynon, Bisaya and Tagalog. So clearly I'm from Visayas..in the Philippines one of the biggest island groups of the Philippines. But tbh.. Tagalog isn't my best language.. I just understand it.. I'm more of a Hiligaynon and a Bisaya person.

Another thing. The term Visayan or "Bisaya" is a bit confusing. It is most commonly used to refer to the Cebuano language. But technically, in addition to being a geographic region, Bisaya is a language family, like Romance languages are. And speakers of these languages may refer to their respective languages as "Bisaya." Ive heard Hiligaynon and Waray speakers refer to their languages as Bisaya, although some might not. People from Davao might not call their language Cebuano because the word means "from Cebu" and they might not identify as Cebuanos. People from Bohol call their dialect of Cebuano or Bisaya as "Boholano" or "Bol-anon." It has a very distinct sound. Famously, they change "Y"s to "J"s like in Spanish. So "gayud" in Bohol would be pronounced as "gajud." Examples of Visayan languages are Cebuano. Hiligaynon (aka Ilonggo). Waray-Waray. Aklanon (aka Akeanon, also referred to as "Ilonggo" like Hiligaynon. Confusing, i know). Karay-a. Romblomanon. There is actually about 30 separate languages classified as Visayan but those ones i mentioned make up about 90 percent of Visayan speakers. AND to confuse you more, there are languages spoken in Bicol region that are Visayan genetically. There are at least two that I know of: Sorsogon and Masbatenyo. They are known as "Bisakol" but they are technically purely Visayan language spawns with an admixture of Bicol words (which already has many similarities to Visayan languages, more than Tagalog at least). I don't know if they also call these languages "Bicol" as well. If I were to give you a rough comparison of how closely related these languages are I'd say that Cebuano and Tagalog are like English and German. And Cebuano, Waray, and Hiligaynon are like Spanish and Portuguese. The three biggest Visayan languages, I find at least, are about 60% to 80% similar or the same. Cebuano and Tagalog is somewhere around 30% to 50% similar. But that's just my completely unscientific musings. So take them with a grain of salt.

Filipinos use 200 sub- languages (more or less) . Each province/ethnic group uses their own mother tongue. Filipino or tagalog is one them. But Filipino is our national language. Tagalog & American English are the most common languages spoken by many Filipinos. Tagalog is mostly spoken by many Filipinos in NCR & central Luzon. Ilokano is mostly spoken somewhere in Northern Luzon. Kapampangan in Pampanga. Bisaya is mostly spoken in Visayas & mindanao region. Chavacacon (Pre-Hispanic language) in Zamboanga. But sometimes, Ilokano uses in some parts of the Philippines because of migration

There is also a language/dialect in the Philippines called the Chavacano/Chabacano.... It's a spanish creole and mostly spoken in Zamboanga City. So the word "moon" in Chavacano is translated as "Luna". "Water" as "Agua", "Sky" as "Cielo" and etc. 😂
Bisaya is Balay but other dialects like in Bolanon or Maasinhon is Bay, the archaic for langit(sky, it can also be mean heaven) in bisaya is Kawanangan(sky, not heaven). That's why langit can be mean sky or heaven and Kawanangan is only sky(atmosphere part). The languages have common words or phrase but remember that this are Languages, not Dialect. Majority of the language influences now for us came from japan(pan or bread), spain(kutsara, tinidor, lamesa or spoon, fork, table) and malay speaking countries(aku or me)
I speak 5 languages on a daily basis that i mix up the words in whatever I say and my friends and family just ends up laughing. I speak English, tagalog, hiligaynon, bisaya and ilocano EVERYDAY. At home I speak Hiligaynon (ilonggo) because that's my dad's mother tongue. My grandma is an ilocana. My boyfriend is bisaya. And I use English and Filipino at work.

Yes youre right There are word from other languages that has different meaning in other filipino language. Thats why we have to be sensitive to use our language when talking to other provinces' people. So in time we are to talk to other people, we use tagalog language to have effective communication.
What Fernando is talking about (with words that superficially sound the same but have no relation and have different meanings) are formally called *false cognates* in linguistics. Some more examples across Philippine languages examples :) Langgam - means ant in Tagalog. Langgam - means bird in Bisaya. Balak - means plan in Tagalog. Balak - means poem in Bisaya (different pronunciation as well, more emphasis on the second syllable) Hilom - means healing in Tagalog Hilom - means quiet in Bisaya Hilom - means secret in Waray and Bikol Ginhawa - means wealth in Tagalog Ginhawa - means breathe in Bisaya Buli - means butt in Hiligaynon Buli - means pubes in Bisaya 🤣 Libang - means to have fun in Tagalog Libang - means to poop in Bisaya 🤣🤣🤣 A Visayan rice wine is also called tuba. No relation (and different pronunciation) to the English word, "tuba," referring to the instrument. I mostly know Bisaya stuff because I'm Bisaya. Also, in case you're wondering, Hiligaynon and Bisaya and Waray sound more similar to each other than the other languages because they're native to the Visayan region. But they are related, separate languages, not dialects of each other.
I remembered when i ask my cousin to play with me and we got confused bcs im bisaya and she is ilonggo i say to her "mag dula ta" and she got confused bcs "dula" in ilonggo is like to vanish or loss

4:30 Haha there's a running joke in my family. The word "pusod" means bellybutton in Tagalog, then in another Filipino language, it means corner. So we'll say, "Kada pusod may pulis, kada pulis may pusod," which means "Each corner has a police officer, and every officer has a bellybutton." There's also "langgam," which means ant in Tagalog, and in other languages, it means bird.
Actually ‘LANGIT’ in hiligaynon is ‘PANGANOD’. I just don’t know why the guy who speaks hiligaynon didn’t know that. I guess maybe because hiligaynon people mostly use the word Langit.

I know a group who is multilingual also haha(international group) their name is Zstars from Zpop Dream they literally speak different languages because they came from 7 different country which is Japan,Indonesia,Vietnam,Thailand,Taiwan,India, and lastly Philippines...
