that's the biggest number of oscars won by a living person (not counting Visual Effects supervisor Dennis Muron, since only six were competitive, two were "special achivement" awards and one "technical achievment" award).
@@juanrisa945 And in '91 he had 3 songs nominated for best original song, all from Beauty And the Beast (Beauty And The Beast, Belle and Be Our Guest). Its not everyday that one person have 3 out of 5 nominations in the same category at the Oscars. He was basically competing against himself. As a sidenote, we should all really give a shoutout for Howard Ashman and Tim Rice who wrote the lyrics for most of Menkens most popular songs. RIP Howard Ashman.
As far as I could tell, he has performed at the Kennedy center but has not received an award. I have seen the awards on television since Trump came to office and denounced the whole affair and people protested going. :(
I'm here much later than these comments were written but I find it hilarious that someone with the word "piano" in their username doesn't know who Elton John is
Okay. A few things.... (1) I didn't know he composed for Little Shop, Enchanted and Tangled (2) I think I forgot he wrote music for Pocahontas. (3) I was hoping Hunchback would be included. (It was. Yay!!!!!) (4) Watching this medley made me realize that the Disney Renaissance, specifically the songs of that era of Disney, would not be the same without Alan Menken. He literally composed my childhood. Each song he performed brought back memories from my younger days watching The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, belting along to the songs and wishing I could be a part of the movie. Thank you Mr. Menken for filling my childhood years with joy and the catchiest songs ever.
My dad says he had a roommate who could hear a song, grab his guitar, and immediately play it. Mr. Menken must be the same way 😂 (prob good w/ numbers +memory too...both seem to be connected to those with superb musical talent)

This man is one of my biggest idols!! His music crisp and clean all the time, his personality down to earth and caring, his piano skills indescribable. My passion for how music and theater is written mainly comes from him. I am so proud that he moved past Howard's death and became a better person having lost his best friend and partner so young. Howard would be extremely proud of him and the world he has created for Disney films.
This is nowhere close to his whole songbook. Haha! The man's repertoire is larger than an encyclopedia. What about Out There from The Hunchback of Notre Dame?
xD I died when he sang that he forgot the lyrics for 'Go the Distance'.. no wonder I was really confused up til that line. Still, he did well... just wish he wasn't in such a rush :x
He and Howard Ashman were like Rodgers and Hart. Fabulous music and lyrics. And when Ashman, like Lorenz Hart, passed away, Menken, like moved on to create great music with others.
When he started playing Bells of Notre Dame, I was like YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS but then again I was like YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS throughout the whole thing!
I got to see him do something like this in person, but it was like three hours and he talked about working on the songs and stuff. Such an awesome experience, he's an incredible composer AND preformer.
He's the best movie composer ever. People likes to talk about Zimmer, Morricone or Williams, are they are really great, but Menken is just... incredible.
Thank you Mr. Menken, I was able to finish my school because of the scholarship you granted. Thank you again. The school I went did not allow contacting you directly to express my gratitude, but if you read this, thank you and thank you
And nothing from Sister Act the musical of Newsies...this man has blessed us with so much! The Disney renaissance era would be nothing without Mr Menken!
He's got a pretty good singing voice himself! I remember him saying his voice is always higher than those who sing his songs (on one of the Bonus Tracks for the Aladdin Broadway musical soundtrack). Plus it's amazing he can play all those songs from memory like that.
It's not easy to come up with children's music but even adult can enjoy so this man is genius. All his music has this fairy-ish sound that go so well with disney princess movie. Classic indeed.
@@jpc2470 The Menkin/Ashman films were straight up Broadway musicals. While there wasn't any profanity or gore, that shouldn't mean they were for children.
Alan Menken's impact is endless. I love the man, the artist. I'm a Disney superfan. I would be so honored to see him. God bless him. I thank him for everything, His work makes me feel in my place and makes me feel like I'm in home. He is just the best to me. 💗
As a kid, I didn't care who wrote the songs I grew up with. Hearing this now, and all these were from just one man, I would just like to give applause 👏
In my musical theater class at school each student had to pick an Alan Menken song and perform it for the class and everyone else chose Disney princess songs and I did star spangled man and it was really funny
I'm guessing the camera team told him "OK, maybe you could play something of yours for maybe... 5 minutes?" hoping it wouldn't be to much of his time. But then Alan love playing his songs and just kept going
I adore him. #1 person on the planet I would love to meet. Not only did he create some of my favorite soundtracks ever (Newsies, BATB, little shop of horrors, Galvant, etc), he comes across as so genuine and friendly. I've seen so many interviews and he seems insanely nice and normal. I would literally be speechless if I actually met him.
I remember watching many Disney musicals when I was only four, not knowing who this guy was. When I got involved in music I discovered the genius behind Aladdin, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, and much more. This man has greatly inspired me to become a composer through the compositions which he wrote. I hope I get to meet this man some day.
Quick shoutout to the incredible Howard Asham who was his friend and collaborator who passed away during the production of Beauty and the Beast. Another incredible artist!!!!
Like everyone and many people of my generation he is our composer😍!! Somehow Disney recognized his talent when he was new in the business and since then he has been composing most of their success songs, like his score always is nominated to Oscars or golden globes. How can so much talent be inside someone???????? Is it that easy for him to compose all those different songs? Like he composed for Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast!
Been a professional song writer for much of my life. There is a very real reason why Alan is my favorite song writer. And Howard Ashman was such a gift.
