So sad we lost them both now :( Will never get tired listening to my favourite band ever

I'm from Russia, I'm 52, sad event... It's almost impossible to find such pure creativity, and in modern music it's useless to even look for it. I would like to believe that one day we will see them on stage as holograms. So that people realize what a treasure they have lost. I couldn't figure out why I suddenly saved two songs "People We Meet" and "Set Me Up" to the top of my playlist on my smartphone and have been listening to them on loop in the car for days. It makes sense to me now((( It's a spiritual connection request.

@@KenKeisi I'm only 23 but been listening forever... Their earlier stuff was so creative and Mackenzie's late stuff was often beautiful. Two fantastic songs there and they, like all the others, are on loop for me all day :) I don't bother looking in the charts either and I'm working on my own stuff to follow theirs

Thanks Alan (& of course, Billy) for making Sulk, for me it was (& still is) the best album ever made.

Such great, innovative albums! Mr. Rankine, if you read this, know you had a bunch of young fans on the other side of the pond, in New York City, who LOVED these album and the Associates. Cheers!

I'd play The Affectionate Punch on full volume. Mum hated it haha, bless her. I want to thank The Associates for making my all-time favourite song. I miss them.

First heard 'Bounce Back' on the J Peel prog, went to see Associates at the Marquee and the UCL in London almost the same week. Totally knocked out by Alan's playing and tone. Adventurous songs, melodies and tones, and of course Billy's outstanding vocals. Affectionate punch still one of my favourite albums - Paper House favourite track !!! Thank you guys... very special.

One of my favorite guitarists/multi-instrumentalists/producers. Genius. RIP. “Kitchen Person” is definitely the most mental track off a mental album (or better yet, single from a collection of singles).

Great musician! The dynamic of this duo might be compared with that other great duo Soft Cell.

Hello Grant, it would be amazing if could ask and record Alan Rankine about his solo recordings, which I truly love. And his remarkable work as a music producer as well... Thanks!

As a young fan of the band, Alan and Billy were like having 2 eccentric uncles. Complete one-offs: “wee man, what do you think of the new Barbra Streisand album?” Er…just amazing, kind guys both gone too soon xx

The cover is from the later Affectionate Punch, not the original one he is talking about.

It was something the Big Gold Dream team put together for MBG for the album re-releases a few years ago. Alan is fantastic with an amazing memory!

IMO, Affectionate punch and A matter of gender were the first of the master pieces.

It's so sad that Alan decided not to stay with The Associates and Billy. One of the great travesties of 20th century bands.

It's because Billy didn't want to tour. So Alan was afraid that they would lose the momentum they had at that point. I think he regretted that decision later on. Sadly, I think that was the start of his downfall which lead to his suicide.

In my opinion Billy was finished after 1984. All his best music was before Perhaps album.

Alan quit because Billy did not want to tour. Yeah, the magic was gone after that. I think Billy knew that as well.

I think the remixed Affectionate Punch has its moments, but most of it sounds just like that: remixed. The songs seem squeezed into a soundscape where they weren't born and where they don't really fit.
