While the Violator is their most commercially successful album, what they did on SOFAD is, in my humble opinion, their best work ever. It was such an immaculate and mature record, made at the pinnacle of their fame, their writing abilities, and their inner struggles. It seeps through every songs. We all know what they went through to record it and what happened next, but despite the inevitable outcome, the composition remains their crown jewel. Anything past that point, sadly, reflect what Alan brought to the band and what they are missing to this day.
I still continue to hold onto hope that Dave, Martin, and Alan would put aside their differences for one last album, if Memento Mori was not already the last one.
Alan Wilder is my man crush, this was fascinating and sad at the same time. i could watch videos of him and listen to him all day, such an intelligent, talented and beautiful man, largely responsible for what made me love DM.
I also think it's really sad to see Alan giving up all this huge part of his life and all the tools which he used to such great effect. I heard this was to pay for his divorce which would be even more tragic, although I'm not sure how true that is.
@@wattage2007 Sadly, it's true. He also sold his house, which he really loved, and his car, too, all to help finance his divorce settlement. And since he would be living in a much smaller house from now on, he was forced to sell much of the stuff he had collected over the years.
@@rbrtck That's tragic. It speaks to the principles of this man though that he wasn't just cashing in on his past to make a fast buck. Alan Wilder shaped me into the man I am today; his musicianship, intelligence, articulation and work ethic were all things I strove for back in my formative teenage years and I miss his presence in the music industry today.
@iRichardi mostly agree, although, I think Playing the Angel had some good tracks. The best albums were Black Celebration, Music for the Masses, and Violator. IMHO. Songs of faith also good, but Ultra was pretty weak compared to it.
@@morghe321I agree on those top 3 albums However SOFAD devotional tour was by far the best!! Showcased Dave’s best vocals and Alan doing every instrument especially drums. It felt like a religious experience with the purple/blue ambiance lighting. Also DM best live mixes ever all prepared by Alan.
Thank God for Alan. Was fortunate enough to speak to him on the phone last summer. Made my year.. I just said thank you for everything and you’ve left an amazing legacy.!!
It was Alan Wilder's drive ,energy and direction that took Depeche Mode right to the top of their game. The band will never reach those heights again without his amazing input that he contributed to in the 14 years he was in the band.
but still DM till this day , the greatest band of the history few artists have reached their level, they still inspiring us with their melodies in this modern generation where about the entire 80s 90s era have disappeared, unless if you hate the shity days of the2010s , we always come back to the diamond era , ppl say that they need more recognition like a hall of fame stuff or somethin, BUT THEY ARE WAY TOO HIGH FOR THAT BULLSHIT , they are in our hearts ALAN,DAVE,FLETCH, and of course MARTIN , isn t that more important than being engraved to the floor ??
Abrazo, bro.
I wish Alan hadn’t left. But he had to do what was right for him at the time. But fan wise it made me sad especially now that Fletch passed away. It’s hard to believe that the members are getting old.
3:15 Alan's special graphite drumsticks. I wonder if used to imagine he was beating Fletch over the head, like Stewart Copeland used to imagine whacking Sting with his sticks.
@@brody5211 Alan and Dave were very, very close. You can see that by watching Devotional. They were like brothers and they fought like brothers, but Ginger Bitch is the real reason he left. Ginger Bitch has never contributed anything to their sound and he throw his weight around. Fuck him.
I still sit and cry when I think about what should have been. Alan Wilder is and will always be my man. I’ve had the pleasure of being comfort hugs from Alan Wilder and there is nothing better than that. Ever.
While I'm a Devotee for life, Depeche Mode's iconic sound died the moment Alan left the band. He's a genius at crafting songs. Sad that the ret5if the band were living their own hell and didn't stop him from leaving.
You can see the passion you have given to the group. While you talk about it and show your work, I can still see that "grit" that has distinguished you in the group. There is an unbreakable bond between you and the DMs, love and hate. Your eyes and your words leave no doubt. I met Depeche Mode thanks to my parents, who still have the tape of the 101 album. It was their soundtrack of a love that has lasted for more than 30 years.
10 000 Subs without Videos Challenge! I’ll give you “precision” and “John...” the others are crap... heaven is especially, live Depeche Mode haven’t been good since Alan left and it shows and the fact that his contribution is so badly missed by the fans just proves that
I totally agree with your analysis of why DM music worsened with the departure of Alan, at least Vince keeps the great 80s pop music alive with the release of Erasures new album Neon.
Same. Of note, I liked each of them, and I felt that they each had contributions that were vital to what Depeche Mode became. I still appreciate Depeche Mode, but Alan was certainly an important contributor and as such, DM isn't the same without him. It would be nice if the past could be the past, in terms of them being younger and now that Dave has given up the irresponsible nature of his drug use at that time, his voice is still phenomenal. That said, if they were to get back together now, I'm sure they would each appreciate the insights and contributions made by each other. A reunion would be awesome, indeed.
What a freaking gold mind. The fact the rest of the band didnt wven bother to catalogue these PRECIOUS ARTIFACTS reveals so much of how little they valued and how much he actually did. It pains me that they couldnt simply appreciate his part in making the band so wonderful. If I were paid the same share as Fletch(the clap) I too would have felt undervalued. He was the one who stayed in the engineer booth and the mixing sessions after Gore wrote, sang and left to be veaten into submission by some Dominatrix or FLETCH DRESSED AS THE GIMP. Im hot...Alan deserved so much more respect...screw the money. I wonder how many simple thank yous or a pat on the back and good show from a few of his bandmates would ha e changed history. I love the band Depeche Mode but I HATE those bandmates.
Alan was a very quiet and humble man. I know when I met him that the real problem was Ginger Bitch, and to see Alan almost hit Ginger Bitch was enough for me to know…he was gone. Honestly, they should have broke up the band. For them to continue without Alan is fucking insulting.
He's like hamster... collecting everything. I remember some eighties interview where he said he has a big box in his house where he's keeping every single staff from a tour :)
Yeah, like a pack rat. He used to have a sizable collection of macabre old medical and dental equipment, too, which I don't see anymore. He must have sold all of that before selling his DM stuff. His new house just isn't big enough to contain all of this stuff, and although he was a hoarder at heart, he didn't want to literally live like one, so the vast majority of what he had collected over the years had to go. Then he sold his beloved house, as he could no longer afford to keep it after his divorce.
Watching this again and it's still sad. Alan having to sell his stuff cause he's running out of money cause of the divorce. Sad that a relationship falls a part.
Once more, the musician and the professional one. It took the rest of DM another decade and his loss to be there probably. When Exciter came out I stopped listening their new stuff.
Alan on drums is... _something else_ entirely. I can't really describe it since I'm not a proper musician but I enjoy his drums way more than Christian. sorry Christian.
so sad when i seen him solding that stuff...now, it's simple to help him, just buy his music, recoil is very good, less commercial and more experimental, but really good...
Their live shows are still going downhill music wise. Just been to Memento Mori show and 90% is recycled from 6y ago Spirit tour... Same intros/outros, mostly same playlist, butchered songs like Strangelove or middle part of Enjoy the silence etc. Wish I was old enough to see at least Devotional.
For how much the acetate's had been sold? Does anyone know? Well, I used to have lots of Promotion records but never any testpressings or even an acetate .. would have loved to add these to my massive collection .. but since Alan left, I do not care much about Depeche Mode anymore, sold my whole collection in the meantime.
Everybody always says they want Alan in DM....I wish Alan would write songs with JOHN FRUSCIANTE...the old guitarist from RHCP....he's cool and available!!!
