Alanis Morissette: Self-Care is No Longer a Luxury

Alanis Morissette (singer, songwriter, musician) breaks down different versions of restoration, the dangers of intolerance and a lack of boundary-setting, and the beauty of anger as a catalyst for positive change. She explains why meditation may not be for everyone, the benefits of guided meditations, and her approach to creating her new meditation album. Alanis opens up about the origins of her disordered eating, her prophetic visions about her career, and the dangers of turning anger inward. Mayim and Jonathan discuss the reasons we project our parents’ relationship onto our own partners, cranial sacral therapy, and what it means to truly rest. Stick around until the end to hear Mayim sing and dissect Alanis's lyrics!

This conversation was so engaging and so REAL. I wish people focused and talked to her more about her second album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, as I think there is a lot to unpack and learn from there as well. Alanis is such a gift to the world and such a talented songwriter.

My girl, Alanis Morissette! Her music carried me through so many emotionally charged times, good and bad. Mayim, while you were speaking about lyrics, I got chills. I've been like that my whole life and didn't realize that other people have that reaction to music. One song in particular, a few lines from the song "Uninvited": "You - you're not allowed, you're uninvited, an unfortunate slight." I would loudly sing those words, like I was saying it to the person who took away my innocence. It feels empowering. Thanks, Mayim, Jonathan and Alanis.

Jagged Little Pill came out when I was 15 and it truly was the first time I heard a woman singing an angry song in an angry voice and it was amazing 🤩. The thing I love most about Alanis, aside from her incredible talent, is that she is a fellow HSP. As a present for finishing middle school, my parents bought me my first CD player along with Jagged Little Pill. I played that CD so much that it nearly broke. What a powerhouse of a record. Also, this interview seemed too short. I checked the time, and there are 20 minutes of just Mayim and Jonathan talking at the end! I wish there had been more Alanis.
@deannad9105
@deannad9105 Год назад
A lot of the time, when a celebrity is promoting something (in this case, the meditation album), they have interviews stacked one after another and are scheduled for 15 minute increments, one after another for an entire day, so they can reach as many demographics/people as possible within their limited amount of free time. I assumed that Alanis was probably doing that and that is why the interview seemed to end abruptly.

I feel the same about You Learn, Mayan! … “just because I can’t meet someone’s needs, doesn’t make them needy”
@vivienne-australianhealing358
I chilled as you sang those lines from that song, Mayim. I am 76 and had never heard of the song, Suit of Lights. I did learn years ago that the composers of "funeral songs" use chords that will make you cry, to assist with the grieving process. So maybe that is what happened here. The human body is amazing with the way it can respond to certain vibrations. In the book "Fork in the Road", (about tuning forks), some of this is explained. 🥰

For me, podcasts are powerful because I get to learn so much more about celebrities, mental health experts and artists. I realize they decide how to answer questions, but your ability, Mayim, to draw out answers from which we can learn is amazing. I believe your honesty about your personal struggles and the other ways in which you lead into questions allows the guests to feel comfortable. These conversations have the feel of "we're all just sitting around and having a small group discussion" even though you have over a million subscribers. Many are careful I'm sure not to say the wrong thing, but it's always fun. I wish you and Jonathan could've talked to Alanis longer.

I really enjoyed the convo at the end about deep rest. I didn’t realize this was a thing lots of people experience, I always called it “resetting my nervous system” - would often happen if I went to nap for 20 mins, wouldn’t fall asleep deeply but I would wake up feeling totally restored. I thought it was just being an HSP thing!

In true brilliance, an poetic, Alanis fashion, I love how she flipped the saying, and called her new cd, the storm before the calm! She is ineffably brilliant, and if I ever go back to teaching English, I'm going to make her lyrics mandatory, for us, to read, because she is one of the best poets and contemporary, of my time! I love you with all my heart, Alanis🌟🎁🥰🕊️! Your music has been the soundtrack to my 20s, both a glorious and miserable time, but you were the soundtrack to everything I was feeling and living! U've also helped me get through my suffering, with Grace, & u inspired me, to better & more creatively articulate, my range of sentiments & emotions, in my writing of poetry, so Thank You, which is also my anthem song! I am also incredibly humbled by your intelligence & vast knowledge, on any given topic, but you've also inspired me, on my lifelong journey, to deeper spirituality & communion, with the God of all good, not the demigod of this world! I am so excited about this CD & can't wait to hear it & read the liner notes which is my first go to! Thank you so much for unabashedly sharing your raw honesty & conveying your deepest & most personal life experiences that we, as fans, & fellow human kind also appreciate, as we are doing more suffering, than not, in this lunatic asylum, we call earth, the prison planet! Much love & blessings,2 u, & your beautiful family, dear Alanis! 💖🙏🎁🌟🥰🕊️✨💫🌟 ps. Just learning that your name came from the story of Atlantis & a Merman, a Demi god, also named Alanis

I love the way she articulates things. Like "we're meant to be projected upon", "invisible loads of moms", "operating from such a flooded space", "can't be left alone because the voices inside get mean", that meditation may not be for everyone, etc. I was like AHA, HMMM, all rings true but I just wouldn't have articulated it that way or even looked at it that way. Like how she was totally understanding with being projected upon, wow, and how she was like, yeah let's shame the ones who can't/do meditate (all in fun) but I love how she's like, ok cool, with everything & just embraces it. I've been really trying to acknowledge my own trauma issues and work on my self healing and it has made me more triggered, resistant, able to identify others trauma behavior & projections which sometimes frustrates me, but her attitude is so chill & cool, like letting it all roll off her back and letting all things just be. I wanna be like that.

I loved this episode. fellow Canadian here. The "none of your business" side of me still desperately whats to know who 'You oughta know' is about!!!! Ugh I feel slimy even wondering, yet I really really do.

I learned that the invent of electricity (lights, phones, TVs) has hurt our ability to rest. When there wasn’t electricity, people would sleep on average 8-11 hours due to lack of sunlight for those hours

OMG. I'm so pleased for this conversation. The first IT job building Linux boxes were assembled while just burning out this cassette. One of my top 3 ever to this day. edit: that's a huge coffee transport system lady.

I feel the same about music. The lyrics and the way it flows just mean so much that alot of ppl (like my soon to be ex husband) never understand why some songs will hit me so emotionally. Jagged little pill came just after high school and all the feelings that come with that album take me right back to that time. At this point I would love to meditate and be at a state of calm. Life gets do chaotic sometimes it feels just so hard to take a breath

I used to have jagged little pill on CASSETTE when I had my first car in the 90's. Loved that album. Felt such a rebel rockin out to that. Great interview

Jagged little pill was my favorite album when I was 8. I didn't even understand most of what she was talking about but I just loved it. This talk is amazing.
