I live in the American Midwest and am of Native American descent. Amongst my people there is an expression used frequently. It's a statement of recognition and acknowledgement of every little event and action, every being and object to have happened and to exist that has led us to this moment right here right now and give thanks to it all. It's used in good times to show gratitude to the Great Spirit for all our blessings. It's is also used in bad times to help us find ourselves in the universe and be grateful for the gift of life we have allowing us the honor to experience this world no matter what hardships we endure. It's an expression that is stated within a single word... This word is... Mahweiah! (MAH-WEI-AH) In short it means thank you everything.

Alanis traveled to India with her mother before writing this. She us thanking India for her enlightening. The dangling carrots are what motivates you even though you can't see it. This song is about suffering and enlightening

Great song. Personal song for her, but one many can relate. She says Thank you India because she credits her spiritual awakening to a trip to India (Savio nailed it). Or a big part of it, anyway. Many people say similar things, as you mentioned. I like that she thanked terror. Even though we have moments where we are scared and afraid, it helps us become who we are when we get passed it.

I was in the midst of an awful divorce, my wife had moved out, we were fighting over custody of our daughter, it was a dark time for me. This song came on the radio, I was driving home, I will never forget, I pulled in my garage, hit the garage door button and for some reason, I cried like a baby all alone in my car in the garage. I sobbed for the first time in the process. The dame burst while this song was on. I remember being shocked at how hard I cried. I was hurting badly and this song reminds me of that moment.

If I remember an interview back in the day she went to India to make peace with the feeling that all of her musical creativity had been sucked dry. She started as a child performer and had never stopped between the physical and mental exhaustion not to mention she had been touring a very personal and emotional album and she was experiencing major writer's block. It wasn't just her career but her identity that she was losing. She was visiting an orphanage, I believe, and spontaneously sat down and started playing a new song, an early draft of this song actually. India did seem to heal something in her.

Ever since hearing Gordon Lightfoot way back in the early ‘60’s and ‘70’s, I’ve been paying attention to musicians coming out of Canada. And they have so many great ones! Rush, Bachman Turner Overdrive (aka BTO), Alanis Morissette, The Bare Naked Ladies, The Tragically Hip, The Lowest of the Low...the list just goes on and on! Tons and tons of talent from our neighbors to the north!

I can’t recall where I heard this story, but this came from when she was in India and became so sick she faced her mortality, which started her questioning her beliefs about life and afterlife. She is thanking this difficult experience that led her to the spiritual quest, expressing gratitude for hardships.

She said in the talk before her VH1 performance of this song she said that after her tour promoting her Jagged Little Pill she was worn out and she was faced with herself and questioned her values. She questioned her belief that you had to look and find outside yourself for happiness, joy and bliss and to get approval from the public. As her values and beliefs were dissolving she was feeling terrified and scared but excited at the same time. So she felt inspired to write this song. PS In Hinduism there is the goddess Kali who is the goddess of death. And in Buddhism they have the Buddhist concept called maya which means illusion from the worldly possessions.

In the video for this she stands naked, only singing certain portions of the lyrics and observing the world around her while literally being touched by random people (not in a dirty way). Yes, her vocal flip is legendary.

I know this was almost a year ago but wanted to say I love this song and I love your reaction! As others said, you nailed the interpretation of this song- Alanis has talked about how she went to India after chasing success but still not finding happiness, and learned a different way to be grateful and a different view of what makes us successful. Being grateful for the blessings in our life and even the hard things that show us we can get through them, these are what we are thankful for. I am glad I came across this! Love from Canada :).

This charttopper captures her new mindset after a trip to India 🤗 The terror she refers to is a feeling she gets that's like stepping into a terrorizing abyss when she lets go of preconceived notions and everything she had been taught to reach a new state of mind 🔥 Great reaction Enoma 🙏

As for the "dangling carrot" reference, I remember seeing it on the little rascals. A donkey, boro, mule, or jackass type animal is very stubborn, they would hang a carrot off a stick in front of it to get it to go. We all chase carrots at some time. Peace and Love!

I remember when this song came out. Los Angeles radio station KROQ has the Kevin and Bean morning show. They play a song after each commercial break. They play the song. It ends and you hear a phone get dialed and ring. "Thank you for calling (Hotel)." "Hi. Is this India?" "Yes." "Thank you." They hung up.

I don't know but I think thanking terror means she is thankful it has not happened to her and it shows how awful terror can be and how she is thankful she has not had to deal with it. I don't think it has anything to do with INDIA.
