This is what she said about it herself. "Actually, the idea for that video hit me in my shower - I was thinking about the song and its simplicity and its baring itself, and I just thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if I could just walk around New York City or grocery stores in just a symbolism of being naked everywhere I went?’ Less about overt sexuality and more about the symbolism of being really raw and naked and intimate in all these environments where you’d seemingly need protection, like in a subway and those kinds of places. So that hit me in the shower and then we executed it."

@smilerpink

Most song lyrics are open to interpretation. To me this is about her spiritual journey. Biographical in that she apparently took a trip to India to meditate as many spiritual pilgrims do. She also came back very sick ("how 'bout getting off of these antibiotics?" ) but came to see the entire experience as a lesson to be learned from. She is saying "thank you" to all of it, pleasure and pain "thank you clarity, thank you terror, thank you silence." Her nakedness represents stripping her normal defenses bare. The touch from others is healing and compassion. Her ecstatic "yeah, yeah" at the end is acceptance of herself and every aspect of the experience. Just my thoughts about it. Very powerful song and video.

Yes, I agree on this and I think it's also a kind of reconciliation of having to sing you oughta know for so many years; a great song that really made her career but still a song of anger, bitterness, jealousy, hurt must be very consuming night after night therefore the lines "how 'bout me not blaming you for everything, how ' bout me enjoying the moment for once, how 'bout how good it feels to finally forgive you" etc letting go of negativity

A beautiful Canadian human being, with a soul that is older than her 46 years. (June 1st) She is healing others and thanking everyone for the honest open and naked privilege to do so, standing there, truthful, serene. Yes, she has lived through her own personal pain. Would love for you to listen to "Hand In My Pocket" from her 1995 release album, *Jagged Little Pill* - her third release I think. This was the first song I heard her sing, and is the one that got me into following her music career. I have loved her for decades and have all her albums. She remains scheduled for touring, in 2020, though the COVID-19 remains the conductor of our time, these days. Great reaction, India. The nudity is not the point - we are all born without clothing. Our society has warped our human being-ness into an overly-modest treatment of the human skin. Think of the male name Alan, then add the snake hiss for "is" - Alanis, is how she pronounces her name. Thanks for this upload!

Probably one of the best albums front to back in the last 25 years was Jagged Little Pill.Im from her home town of Ottawa Ontario Canada and had the pleasure of meeting her a couple times. Cool lady and very respectful. Was never a fan when she first came out to be honest. But over the past 10 years or so really listened to her stuff and she is a legend in her field. She was playing her home town in July for the first time in 10 years and was going. Corona stopped that. Great artist Alanis Morissette. Vanier loves ya baby

Alanis talked with MTV about the break between LPs and the first single: "Basically, I had never stopped in my whole life, hadn't taken a long breath, and I took a year and a half off and basically learned how to do that. When I did stop and I was silent and I breathed... I was just left with an immense amount of gratitude, and inspiration, and love, and bliss, and that's where the song came from, you know." The lyrics document Morissette's spiritual awakenings following her trip to India, as well as other physical and internal journeys. In "Thank U", Alanis expresses the heartfelt gratitude, inspiration, and compassion that she felt at the time she wrote it.[4] According to Jon Pareles of The New York Times, the song has "verses of self-help," such as, "How 'bout no longer being masochistic?, how 'bout remembering your divinity?, how 'bout unabashedly bawling your eyes out?."[5] Liana Jones of Allmusic noticed that "There aren't many artists, let alone everyday people, who acknowledge and pay tribute to life's lessons."

She went on a spiritual journey to India after the success of Jagged little pill. So this album was more spiritual and I enjoyed it. If you react to Unsent, it’s a song about writing to all of her exes and what she learned from it. It was a true story. She reached out to all of her exes to let them know she wrote a song about them. I related to this song because we have all done that:). The lyrics are special

This is the best response I've seen so far.. I agree 100% with "How about getting off of these antibiotics" Stop worrying so much about your health, be healthy but not to the point you're making yourself sick. "How about stopping eating when I'm filled up" Stop comforting yourself with food, have control over your life. "How about them transparent dangling carrots" How about buying those diamond earrings you've wanted so bad but not brave enough to buy or wear? "How about that ever elusive kudo" Work on complimenting/praising yourself. (kudo means 'to praise') "Thank you India Thank you terror Thank you disillusionment Thank you frailty Thank you consequence Thank you thank you silence" (thank you india for enlightening me... thank you terror for reminding me life could stop at any time, thank you dissilusionment for being there when i needed to pretend i wasnt unhappy, thank you frailty for reminding me i am strong, thank you consequence for making me think before i act/speak, thank you silence for letting me breathe and feel calm again. "How about me not blaming you for everything" it takes two to tango. i am responsible for things too. "How about me enjoying the moment for once" i need to stop complaining, worrying every second and actually live. "How about how good it feels to finally forgive you" i will let go of my anger and hurt. "How about grieving it all one at a time" i'm going to take one day at a time. "The moment I let go of it was The moment I got more than I could handle The moment I jumped off of it was The moment I touched down" letting go of negativity has helped me feel better. "How about no longer being masochistic" let's stop being perverted. "How about remembering your divinity" and instead remember what God wants from us - to be good. "How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out" let's cry without being embarrassed of it. "How about not equating death with stopping" there is life after death.

During a trip to India, in 1997, Alanis wrote some songs, including "Thank U". In 1998, Morissette contributed with the song "Uninvited" for the soundtrack of the 1998 film City of Angels. In September of the same year, "Thank U" was released on radio and Alanis talked with MTV about the break between LPs and the first single: "Basically, I had never stopped in my whole life, hadn't taken a long breath, and I took a year and a half off and basically learned how to do that. She has said in an interview that she had a spiritual trip and it had a major impact on her. She felt able to "let go" of all the materialistic things and allowed herself to see what was important in her life. "How 'bout .......' thi I ab iui it those lines. And the thank you's are what she realised were the important things

It is about being thankful, not an ingrate. It is about realizing the things you complain about are actually able to form your character and strengthen a person. It is all about not what happens to you, but how you react to it. One thing can tear a person down, and the same thing can strengthen another. The Stoic says I cannot control most of what happens, but I can control completely how I react to it, and that determines its impact on me.

the nakedness was about exposing the things that tore you down as the things that built you up and made you stronger- that not until you strip that all away and give it the distance and perspective and exposure can you heal and move on and be stronger

I love the way this song makes you feel calm - whatever else is happening. Thank you is something most of us need to remember to think about our lives. If you want to hear the opposite - listen to You Oughta Know - the angriest song I've ever heard...

The album that this is from - Jagged Little Pill (I think!) is one of the biggest selling of all time. It went to number one around the world.
