KPDX Portland, OR
Alaska Airlines flight 1282, a Boeing 737 Max 9 registration N704AL was enroute from KPDX Portland, OR to KONT Ontario, CA when shortly after departure suffered a sudden explosive decompression and loss of a large panel and emergency door. Speculation that it was possibly due to an exit plug failure. Some minor injuries were reported.

Well done by the pilots. They definitely earned that pay check last night.

I'm listening to this from PDX on an Alaska Flight coming up to the runway right now. Heading to LAX to see The Eagles tonight.

0:49 aren't they supposed to say "mayday mayday mayday" to declare an emergency?

I understand that would be the ICAO standard. I've gotten the impression that specifically US pilots have a tendency to use deviating expressions, mostly 'declare an emergency'.

There isn’t a rule about this, but it is addressed by the Aeronautical Information Manual (6-3-1c), which states the initial communication *should* begin with MAYDAY. When they use the word “should” it means it is preferred but not required. In practice, I only hear it used when an emergency is extreme or will require major deviations from the rules or ATC instructions.

I also think they were so busy going through the motions that there just wasn’t time for a Mayday per se. They’re prolly preoccupied with safely descending as quickly as possible whilst also checking that there are no technical issues.

Was that an emergency exit panel that blew out?

It's the plugged door that can be plugged or door placed for higher seating capacity layouts at the factory-- it's between exit rows and aft exits (around row 27).

Imagine how the pilots feel!

And the automatic subs are hilarious - the algorithm identifies the radio white noise as 'applause' and 'laughter'...

Wow ATC had their heads up their ass on this one. Terrible response and handling. They're not even ID'd as EM. To be fair, the PIC never stated they lost part of the aircraft.

Aviate, navigate, communicate....in that order

Strapped into the seat with the cockpit door closed all they knew was it was an explosive decompression. After that it’s all assholes and elbow’s stopping the high climb rate while donning their masks at the same time. Then communicate to ATC the declaration of an emergency while running the memory items then the checklist for a rapid D. Once the dust clears, and there was certainly dust and debris flying, they had to get turned back around and load the box for the approach back into PDX. Not to mention communicate with the cabin crew to find out what they knew and advise them to prepare the cabin for an immediate return. Approach and landing checklists needed to performed after briefing approach and making sure the nav radios and approach was set up. I don’t think most can appreciate the ballet in the orchestra of chaos that was performed very well here. The crew performed as trained extremely well. How many of those passengers think that these pilots are overpaid?

@Gundog55 Spot on. I was surprised to heat later that the cockpit door blew open which probably made things even more chaotic. Aren't those supposed to be hardened?

@@mball572They are designed to unlock and blow open in a decompression
