Alaska Brown Bear Charges Bear Viewers 

I did this and similar a hundred times in my years on Kodiak. When the bear lays down it is making the statement: "this is my space." He's giving you a message. Understand what he is saying and why. The correct move isn't to play tough guy with the bear, this is the time to back away a short distance and allow the bear to "win" the space argument. Once you've acknowledged his space and dominance he'll continue his activities and ignore you. Another trick to filming bears along beaches and creeks is to keep a symbolic barrier between you and the bear. If there's a log on the beach, set up behind that log. If a creek, film from the opposite side. Such barriers are only symbolic and easily crossed by the bear, but it gives him the reference "my space - your space." They'll respect your space behind the barrier because you are respecting his space. It took me a long time to understand this simple rule with brown/grizzlies. They have a space that they demand. The space can be quite small during the salmon runs and large during other times of year, and he'll let you know when you cross that space line that he's formed in his mind. Once you've had that space transaction you can film them for hours without him seemingly being aware of you. The best film, photos and observation is when the you and the bear have made that agreement and the bear is doing his own thing and you are dismissed from his mind. Don't be an intrusion, be part of the landscape.

Taking points from others is respectable but it seems to really trigger you.

I wonder if the bear got frightened by the sound of scraping gravel? It was just walking along and only did the display after the sound. Good thing the bear was only interested in its search for food!
