Alaska capital weighs tourism, melting glacier 

When Capt. George Vancouver "discovered" the area now called Juneau, AK in 1794 the Mendenhall Glacier overlaid what is now our Juneau airport and pressed up against what is now called Douglas Island (Gastineau Channel was a dead end inlet). During this same voyage of discovery, he sailed past what is now the entrance to Glacier Bay, but he did not "discover" Glacier Bay or see it because it was filled with an ice field. These Alaskan glaciers and ice fields were retreating then and continue to do so to this day and have probably been doing so since the end of the last little ice age.

Everywhere those ships show up, get ruined. We banned the biggest ones, and limited the amount of people here in Maine. Business owners, too bad, find something else to do.

Visited Juneau and A Huge Piece broke Off, IT Sounded like a Freight Train, Luckily The Tourist Chopper had Just Departed. Do they Still have the Tours? Once A Ketchikan Resident, Alaska I Consider 🏠

I've been to Juneau. It's beautiful

The tour boats and ferries will still stop in Juneau . People on the inside passage will still see glaciers. Maybe they won't bother to ride out to the mendenhall but the shops downtown will continue to be profitable.
