Alaskan tectonics are dominated by Pacific-North American plate interaction. The megathrust boundary between the plates results in both the 4,000-km-long Aleutian Trench and in the arc of active volcanoes that lie subparallel to the trench. This animation discusses the range of tectonic activity from megathrust earthquakes to accretion of geologic terranes. Along the trench, the rate of convergence ranges from 5 cm/year on the east to 7.8 cm/year on the west. The angle of subduction also changes from shallow in the east to steep in the west. In the Gulf of Alaska region, the subduction of the Yakutat plateau complicates the area, and is responsible for mountain building in the Chumach-St. Elias Ranges and in the Denali Range. We get earthquakes in The Yukon. I wonder how they are related. I’m fascinated that the Yakitat has slowly been subducting.

I do wonder why when Terranes are shown and explained that current ones like The Philippine Archipelago and New Zealand aren't used as examples.

Because they don't like this type of video and they think it will make RU-vid not show this type to them(?) That does not work but they might think it does. Either that or some people do that to EVERY video just to mess with the owner of the channel.

We don't use metric system here in USA...please use regular USA english.
@llwpeaches
@llwpeaches 9 месяцев назад
Yes we do. Metric is the standard measuring system in U.S. professional institutions, mostly those that are science-oriented, like geology, astronomy, meteorology, engineering, medicine, military, etc. You are clearly not associated with such advanced fields of study and practice. Perhaps a little more education on your part would do some good. Although if you drink alcohol or own guns, you're also using the metric system when referring to the caliber of bullets for certain firearms or the milliliters (or liters) of booze you buy and consume. Speaking of of buying, the U.S. dollar itself is also decimalized to match metric standards.

Call it what it is ie The Alaska/British Columbia region for God's sake, so tired of Yanks ignoring the 2nd largest by land country to its north.

We "Yanks" do not ignore Canada. And British Columbia is an important component of the Pacific Northwest. But this animation isn't about British Columbia. It is about Alaska.
