I hate to bring this up because this was an awesome video, but the "Appalachian" mountains go all the way through Scotland to Scandinavia. They were formed as part of the building of Pangaea. When the super continent broke apart, and the Atlantic was born, a segment of them stayed behind being called Scottish Highlands. This is not the only remnant of the Mount chain we call Appalachian Mountains but is better called Central Pangean Mountains. Mind you, due to the depth of base rock, it is believed this range was at least as high as the Himalayas. Remnants of this massive mountain range include the Appalachian Mountains of North America, the Little Atlas of Morocco, Ireland, the Scottish Highlands, and part of Greenland and Scandinavia.
And the Atlas Mountains in northwest Africa are geologically the same, part of the "Central Pangean Mountains"! Scotland the northern end, African the southern end, Appalachia in the middle.

@@hime273 no, red River(Minnesota and Dakotas) goes north also, but it does flow INTO the Appalachian Mountains and not away from. That is why it is known to be older than the mountains as they rose up and the river cut down as they did.
@@robynsnest8668 I live right near the New River in Boone NC... which is one of the highest elevations which the New River passes through... And the New river isn't any deeper of a cut in the landscape, than any other river around here. I mean the rivers in this part of the Appalachians (Right Around Boone) haven't exactly created deep canyons or georges, because of the slow flow rates. The New River is exceptionally slow flowing in this area, and is very popular for Tubing.
I spent a large part of my early childhood in the Appalachian mountains and I really wish I'd been able to learn more about the area so that I could have appreciated it more. I still love that part of the country and I'm glad I've had the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding, due to programs like this one.
I find continental collision fascinating--how continents come together to form supercontinents. I just moved east from Washinton State (Subduction City) and want to know more about the Appalachians. All things considered, the were and are pretty awesome.

My only "fault" with this documentary is that they did not mention that MARIE THARP's findings and measurements of bathymetry and discovery of mid-ocean ridges, were equally as important as Hess' findings and they worked together to create the theory... Also that people had been theorizing about the matching shapes of coastlines for centuries before Wegener, but he was the first to create the theory of them once existing together as "Pangea."
@4Runner I'm not Christian personally, but there are recurrent symbols and stories throughout folklore around the world (from All-Mother figures of Earth and abundance, to ancient paradise gardens lost to time) that archaeologists and historians use to support evidence about the changes of Earth. I'm in Washington state and geologists here have been working with native tribes to keep their stories about ancient tsunamis or earthquakes- which correlate with the evidence of cores taken from sand deposits (showing the deposits of tsunami sand, or mud from landslides). Ancient people knew far more than we allow ourselves to admit- just as we are inquisitive, curious, and storytelling creatures now; we were the same people thousands of centuries ago. We are the same humans!
I would like to know more about the bends and folds and curves in the rock cut just west of the US-70 bridge in Kingston, TN. It looks a lot like the rocks in Walland, TN. Winter is the best time to see them, as weed and small trees covers it in the spring and summer. These rocks are tremendously curvy and deserve more exposure and information to the public. Also, is there a way we can get his books and maps? Thanks!
I got to say living in the Appalachian mountains are awesome the town's all across that are awesome I got to say the beautiful Winters beautiful falls I live on the border New York in the heart of the Appalachian mountains and it is beautiful and I love every bit of it I would have ever seen nature everyday then just buildings and concrete all around me because when you get stuck in city life you don't see the beauty and the importance in life when you can enjoy nature and the way of the mountains where everybody in these communities take care of each other in a stranger the friend you never met and you don't have to worry once you learn that you will always love these communities up in these mountains everybody has each other back and that's all that matters
What is really hard to grasp is the Lake Effect is that the real heavy stuff is usually localized. You can live in the town of East Aurora for example and get nailed with 3 feet and yet just a few miles away in Amherst and you got Zero zip nada with blue sky and puffy clouds.

Vertical rock formations are the result of thrust faults. Sometimes referred to as crustal forshortening .Think of it this way, your driving a Cadillac at 100 mph. You hit a bridge abutment head on, the vehicle becomes forshortened. In some cases the formation is flipped completely over. The only way to tell is by dating the fossils if any are present. In Maryland on Rt.68at 15 mile creek rd. there's a service rd. that parallels the highway, here there are ordovician strata over Pennsylvanian strata. So you have marine fossils over plant fossils with a goodly amount of slicken sides(polished by tectonic action ).

I would like to add i believe a large impact help create the separation of Pangea and the rest shows. Whats on bottom in now on top ,and brecciated melt is found. I bet there's shocked quartz around. The first mountain chain was the Ouachita Mountains that snaked its way across Texas and the South to head up along the East Coast to end up in present day Russia. Those have eroded away with a few nubs above the surface in Texas and their exposed roots forming the Ouachita Mountains in Oklahoma and Arkansas along with the Ural Mountains in Russia.
There is not a direct correlation because their origin stories are out of synch by a couple hundred million years. The Appalachian Mtns were formed by the collision with Africa beginning 360 million years as stated in the video. The Atlas Mtns began forming 80 million years ago with the collision of Africa with the European plate which is still ongoing. There is a lot of info on both of these mtn ranges online through a simple key word search
There is a section of the anti-Atlas mountain which are the same rock as the Appalachians which are on that side of the divide when the Atantic Ocean started dividing, likewise, Florida and parts of Georgia were parts of the old "Africa" (Gondwanaland) However, the anti-Atlasas have gone through a lot of processes since then that they would be much less recognizable. (b/c apparently they did recognize some similarity)
The explanations of the mountain building processes as with the Himalayas is due to the Indian sub continent, subduction get under 5he Asian continent. The Appalachian range was formed as the eastern part of the American continent began folding as the mid Atlantic ridge spreading continued. The Rocky Mountain range however was also formed from a subduction event and part of this is evidenced by the locations of volcanos in the Grand Canyon and New Mexico. Also that the HotSpot that is now Under Yellowstone as a super volcano had erupt I’ve events to the west of the current location. The Hot spot did not move, the American continent moved over it. In that there was an inland ocean in the Great Plains, this through weight on the central part of the plate, slowed the plate movement down causing the stress that formed the New Madrid Fault. It is still undetermined as to wether the Rocky Mountain range ,which extends into Canada was caused by just one plate subduction or two. If One, then the last remnants of that plate would be the Juan DeFuco plate that is being sub-ducted under the Cascadia range.
I disagree with your statement Walter that the Himalayas we're formed by the Indian plate subducting under the Asian plate to form the Himalayas. The Indian collided with the Asian plate to push up the Himalayas just as what was to become the North American plate collided with Africa and Europe to form the Appalachian Mountains. No subduction occured there either. The bent, wave like rock formations as pointed out in both locations ( Himalayas and the Appalachians) are created by the compressional forces of the two land masses colliding.

I have read that historically there might have been subduction involved in the Indian plate's rapid northern migration, but that would have predated the Himalayas.

Humans have little concept of actual time. For the most part we think that a century is a long time, and some can think in era's that involve milleniums. But more than a few millinum is more than the majority of humans can fathom. There are some religions beliefs in which everything we know is only a few thousand years old. You can't begin to understand the earth if you look at it in human terms, a million years is just a blink and the largest mountains are not even a ripple on the surface.
Molted iron, uranium and thorium. Which are heavy metals. When the earth formed it was all molten and heavy metals eventually made their way to the core. To create the magnetic poles you need a spinning core within liquid metal otherwise it wouldnt exist. Hence Mars. The theory is that the core has to have a heat generating source to stay molten. Hence the uranium and thorium reaction. Eventually though, these radioactive natural materials will run out and who knows. This is the accepted theory and makes logical sense. I personally think all the land masses on earth was just one big land mass all the way up until the great flood. That would explain why there is very similar megastructures all over the world and would make a lot more sense than people sailing across the ocean 15 to 20 thousand yrs ago.

You’ve never heard of Gondwanaland? It’s just a name for the supercontinent composed of Africa, South America, India, Antarctica, and Australia, from about 300 million years ago. It is impossible for the mountains of the earth to have formed over vast ages of time. They were uplifted during the Noaich Flood, as their features verify. Uniformitarianism processes cannot have created the earth's mountains. A mountain is a mass of materials which has been uplifted from the lithosphere of the Earth. All mountains possess deformed strata. The Earth's mountains were produced by the process of Orogeny which caused uplift. The horizontal movement of continental plates produced tremendous internal pressure and resistance against adjacent continental plates. This pressure has caused mountains to uplift at the Orogeny belt (edge of the plate) and also farther inland. A common feature of mountains is that they posses many deformed sedimentary strata which have concreted into solid rock. The existence of folded and bent (deformed) strata, particularly those of mountains, discredits the uniformitatian explanation of mountain building because rock will not bend unless subjected to extreme confining (overburden) pressure and/or at high temperature. Cold rock is brittle and will not bent, but will instead break. Because mountains possess deformed strata, mountain building by uniformitarian process would require the materials to have been deep inside the Earth where the confining pressure (overburden pressure) in all directions could be great enough to prevent the material from fracturing and becoming pulverized. If the material were not deep in the Earth, there would be a lack of confining pressure above it, and it would move in the direction of the least confining pressure, which would be upwards towards the Earth's surface. Increasing temperature will increase ductility of rock, but temperatures great enough to significantly improve ductility (300-600C) are at depths of kilometers below the Earth's surface.[9] In actuality, mountain building by uniformitarian process would require that the materials of which the mountain is comprised, including it's sedimentary strata, to have been pushed deep into the earth and subsequently covered with deep overburden which would be great enough to temporarily prevent uplift under great pressure. It's strata could then become deformed by heat and confining pressure. Once the strata had become deformed, the overburden would then have to be removed to allow uplift unless we are to expect the Earth's mountains to be as high above the Earth's surface as the depth of overburden necessary for deformation. At that time, the mountain could then become a feature of the Earth's surface by uplift. This scenario is so implausible as to be considered utterly absurd for a number of reasons, most obviously because the uplift necessary to position them at the surface of the Earth and above it would reduce the mountain to a pile of crushed rock. Also, there would be no continuity of strata between the mountain and the land which surrounds it unless vast areas of the surface of the Earth were also subjected to the same process which created the mountain. Stated simply, mountains built by uniformitarian process do not exist. The obvious explanation for mountain formation with deformed strata is that pressure was applied to recently deposited, sedimentary strata mixed with solid rock which were still moist, soft, and plastic. This pressure forced the materials upward while horizontal movement caused their folding. After their formation, gravity drew the water downward and out of the materials to pool below the newly formed mountain. The removal of water allowed the materials to concrete into solid rock. The existence of folded strata, particularly those of mountains, provides astonishing evidence that the mountains of the earth and their folded strata were created by rapid continental movement during the Noaich Flood. This evidence discredits the uniformitarian idea that mountains are millions of years old and formed over a period of millions of years.
You seem to have greatly oversimplified mountains and mountain-building and make some very odd assumptions about how rocks behave under pressure and an especially odd assumption that mountains are made of sedimentary rock. Perhaps there could be instances of mountains formed in the manner you describe, but geology is far too varied to accept a single explanation for the wide diversity of observed mountain ranges, and the evidence for their origins (or origens, if you will) is even more varied and wide-ranging.

Assumptions, theory's. How fast were the continents "supposed" to have been moving when they formed the mountain ranges??? 6,000 foot peaks are nothing. There are far bigger mountains, and there is no way they were formed by Continents colliding at the snails speed that they "drift" at today. In other words, something Catastrophic happened with our world that this video doesn't even come close to describing. Subduction and isostacy definitely played a role and still do. The science that explains the geology of the formation of mountain ranges like the Himalayas or the Appalachians has been developing and become more refined over many decades. Your over all dismissive comment of this video also doesn't offer any explanation of what you think is going on. In fact your casual use of the term theories suggests quite strongly suggests that you don't really understand the scientific method which based on collecting evidence that supports the theory. The typical answers that have been sold as irrefutable have gaping holes in them to say the least. You seem like an educated man, so I will just spill it. First of all you have to jettison the notion that the earth is millions of years old. The "science" that tells us that is demonstrably full of holes and assumptions. Now, I am giving my version of how I think it began. The pacific ring of fire and the oceanic ridge. To quote the Bible "the fountains of the great deep broke up". We know what is down there. Massive volcanic mountain ranges all following a single track. Where is the explanation for this? I submit that it was a single occurrence. They erupted so violently that it split the earths crust open like a zipper causing intense global rain, just as the Bible says. This may have been partially due to the density of the cold ocean at the time, several thousand years ago. But that was only the catalyst of CPT. Eventually water covered what once was the "Pangea" (no mountain ranges as we now know them), and then subduction occurred along the edges of the continent. So a major, sudden alteration of the make up of the earths surface ultimately resulted in subduction. That caused the real catastrophe. We know now from Geological studies that there have been absolutely monstrous earthquakes, MASSIVE earthquakes that we can hardly even fathom. What we know as Continental drift was Continental sprint! There is a huge amount of data to support this model and it answers more geological questions than plate tectonics. It is highly un_academic and un_scientific if the hypothesis is taken as fact, Pangaea is a hypothesis and I disapprove it. There is no doubt about floating tectonic plates but one must not forget the fact of lava condensation to form land masses. Another point is taking the hypothesis of solid iron core as fact as I disagree with it too. It doesn't fits in the pictures.
