It seems to me that the crew on this boat is pretty green and eager to do a good job, but the guy in charge has no idea how to get the best performance out of his crew. He has a "the beatings will continue until moral and performance improves" sort of attitude. Were I on this crew for my first trip, I would have quit once arriving at the dock. I refuse to work for jerks!
I am said man joining a crew, it’s a right is passage, I was born in Alaska and in a few short days I’ll be on this boat, as long as I’m not physically beaten I’ll be fine
Seeing a lot of comments from people that obviously have no idea what it's like to work in this industry lol. They could have ran it a lot smoother but I'm sure an opener or two after this and they were running a lot more smoothly. Also, holy shit do i miss Alaska. Outside of Sitka at 2am and standing on the back deck listening to tunes and watching the northern lights is a memory that will live rent free in my brain forever.
E-GADS! First time deck boss with a green crew or what..... Couple more hauls and they might know what to do and when. Need to funnel the fish into the hold through a larger opening instead of kicking them in through a small hole. All said, nice haul.
Sorry I hit post accidentally. Clearing the web from over your open hatch. But this will also keep the web higher up on the deck and that In turn well cause the web to pull higher up towards the top of your picking boom causing a pouring affect to happen. And your guys will not even touch your gear. That should only take 10 to 12 min. Max to get that set out of the water. The skipper is the one that does all the work with the hydros. But I will say that a great set good job and thanks for sharing it with use. I can’t tell from the if your picking booms a long enough, lots of guys get that part of there rigging wrong. Your picking booms have to be hi enough to make it easy on the fish recovery.
The boat holds needs a sloping hopper to accept fish coming on board, save walking on, being pushed around by boots etc. Have they ever heard of a wooden board rake. Was the crew ever shown what to do in sea trials, and the lifting rope system looks very antiquated and not fluent in operation. Very poor directions given by the skipper to his crew. I've seen many European ships handling far larger catches and the ship are designed to minimize catch spoilage, and speedier storage of equipment and product
This guy is my friend and he knows what he’s doing the only thing he did wrong is not tank down so he hast to lift the fish in his bag higher out of the water. He was anticipating 150+ thousand pounds and went dry tank lesson learned I’m sure he’s super smart and his ability to catch fish in the money he makes yearly is way more than the people that are commenting against him
Yeah, lots of ppl who have money stomp on anyone on the ladder below them. You made everyone's point instead of defending your friend you made it clear you look down on ppl who don't have a monied status and think you should be able to treat them as you wish. And when the behavior is pointed out to you, you come back with a statement of your worth? WTActualF dude?
A real good skipper treats his crew with respect, if they are not sure? train them so they can become a valued part of good crew. This Flog of a skipper is lucky he didn't end up in the drink!! I would hate to be in the trenches with him? well done to the crew who put up with this prick.
are you guys allowed to use old school seine tables? as a canadian were allowed to use big net drums. But i know its more strict up there. would seem more efficient with a seine table
Recipe for disaster. Green deck boss, green deck hands and a piss poor set up for catch management. Someone one that boat is gonna get hurt, if not DIE!
Beware of captains that always have greenhorns. Good captains will maintain a good crew. If there is turnover, the new crew will have some sort of experience. Remain calm and explain what you need.
O c'mon. I did it... and it is basically slave labor with high risks and no respect. Much respect to good crew members but I totally understand why there is a high turnover rate.
Stay calm, Skipper. Your stress is transferred to the crew which only slows them down, impairs their thinking, and makes accidents more likely. Bona fides; retired construction foreman.
I don't know this type of fishing but it only took 5 minutes to see they were a paniced skipper and a willing but raw crew. I couldn't see if fish were getting lost but it can't be too many. Not if your going home with fish covering the deck. I was trained to not abuse the fish or get my arse kicked by the age of 10. I felt sick to see this display.
The reason that there are so many asshole bully's in the world is because good people let them get away with their shitty behavior. Blue Shirt Guy needs to try picking his teeth up off the deck with broken fingers once or twice. He may learn that being a bit more patient toward others fetches better results.
@@aculasabacca yes I agree 👍💯 lol, I can't believe I actually sat and watched this video almost a year ago! Was once considering taking up commercial fishing in Alaska!!!
@@sandmors7998 I spent ten years up there in the 90's. My last gig was purse seining in Chignik which was a sweet fishery comparatively. The following year many of the Captains there left their boats dry and crewed on their friends boats as F&G became more and more restrictive. Crab jobs were really hard to find then. I assume Deadliest catch must have caused a flood of young dudes looking for work further saturating the market for deckhands.
Is this their first rodeo?? That guy with the potty mouth is making it worse...quite comical hahaha. I hope the guy with the mouth watches this and learns from his mistakes.
Guy doing all the instructions is deck boss not the skipper, skipper runs the boat. Fairly green crew they will learn after a couple more sets then will become more efficient. Deck boss seems pretty tolerant, chums first runs of the season, nice haul
Pretty sure if the guy on the hydraulics wasn't the captain, the captain would have came out and ripped the deck boss a new @$$#ole... He didn't handle anything great...
Amezing....thank you for the video....this is really like in Galilea two thousand years ago, when He said to the pupils; "Duc in altum"...Lk. 5 : 4..good luck to Deck boss and the crews....
Everybody is a critic...FYI this was a 65k pound set. not our first, not our last. Loaded the boat in 4 sets, unloaded then made 4 more for a grand total of 145k lbs for the day let’s see you rookies do that.
You need to go outside your crib and go view other boat operations, setups and and product handling. Especially the European boats, they handle far larger catches, quicker and cleaner. And maybe you should train your crew by doing some sea trials first. In Australia we do numerous shots all timed until we are ready to go fishing. If a crew member can't cut the mustard they're off and replaced. Look up Australian Prawns. These boats are speciafically built to do a job including weighing packing and cold storage all whilst catching. good luck
Once again, his condescension to the younger crew members, or if your friend is the skipper in the wheelhouse allowing the treatment out there to happen, it makes NO difference what his stock or bank account has in it as far as his real worth as a human being.
I would say that when you bring them to dock and unload them you will be told how many pounds you had by the factory who weighs them, since that's how you get paid. It wouldn't take long to figure out how many pounds you have when the tank is at a certain level, also called experience.
buggsy5: I can see that making sense. The catch can be tracked and time adjusted during the season or in subsequent seasons since they are unlikely to catch all of them in one season so survivors can reproduce.
Generally they are weighed out when picked up by Fish tenders. A larger boat that moves around and picks up the fish to save the fishing boats from having to leave the fishing grounds and waste valuable time and fuel.
