Raw footage of commercial seine fishing for salmon in Crawfish Inlet, Baranof Island, Southeast Alaska. Unbelievable return for the chum salmon fishery.
Footage taken on F/V Lucky Star. August, 2018.
Net rolls varied from 3,500 lbs. - 8,000 lbs. This is incredible fishing!
"The purse seine fleet set a single day chum salmon catch record for the entire state with a haul of over 980,000 chum salmon taken at Crawfish Inlet south of Sitka on Thursday, Aug. 30 according to Northern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (NSRAA) manager Steve Reifenstuhl. Seiners took 1.13 million fish in two openings."

Ok a few questions answered. These fish are all for human consumption. Costco sells them as salmon burgers, the roe or eggs are extremely valuable served as Ikura in sushi restaurants the milt is eaten in Japan also. There a very few negative aspects to this program, the most negative is the concentration of the effort can make a few unpleasant experiences between the boats.the most valuable aspect here is the fact that these are new dollars not value added dollars and the hatchery program is paid for by a cost recovery program derived by a portion of the catch.

It's called plunging. When the other end of the net is first brought back to the boat the only gap is under the boat. So they plunge to keep the fish from escaping under the boat.

These are salmon. Read up on salmon stocking and harvesting, and how they keep the numbers up. These fish are hatched and released into the wild, and then they are caught at the end of their lifetime. They only live about 5 years and then die. It would be a crime if they were not eaten and just left to rot after they reproduced.

@johnnygee5639
@johnnygee5639 3 года назад
Mainly just used for there eggs bruh. If you eat Chum then you should understand the best. An as far as texture goes from King & Sockeye and then you go and take a bite out of chum Salmon or humpy. The demand for chum eggs is thee most sought after eggs out off all the salmon than any other salmon. The rest of the fish usually is fertilizer or pet food. So to say that your chum was MORE mushy because of the fisherman "walked all over". I think is was more mushy because just in general all the fish were in spawn phase of there life so they changed colors (from the fish going up a creek into fresh water then some of them come back out of the creek when the tied goes out.). Anyways these guys did a good job of working together and also for catch a telephone pole. Well note to all: that you could have a side job selling firewood after all the twigs and branches and logs you accumulate throughout the day. An if your skiff man helps you out then chances are your skipper won't be on board with your side job. Those weren't "DIVING DOGS". Those must have been sleeping dogs haha jk. Thanks for sharing the video. We just put our net away and the bait shed is on and ready to head out longlining (60k lbs of Halibut & 40k lbs of Black Cod) and then it's time to prepare for a short and we'll needed / wanted vacation. The price of dogs (chum) this year went up to $1.20 lb so that 60,000 lbs set right there, today would had made each deckhand (full crew share of 10%). Would had made you a little over $7,000 each. So that I would say would be a very good payday for about 30 minutes worth of work not counting the off load time once you hit the tender! Nice job fellas!

So unless your a plant or a cat/dog then I don't recommend ordering Chum / dog Salmon from any restaurant. Sorry for being so direct but I work in this fishery and to come off as if they ar stepping in the fish on purpose is a very improper statement and these guys are busting there ass. Let alone people don't usually eat the meat of these salmon, mainly the eggs. You want good salmon then order Sockeye (Red) Salmon or King Salmon or Coho (silver) Salmon. WOW That was freakin Awesome to watch!! I love watching stuff like this! I was lucky enough to grow up around guns, hunting, fishing ect…. But I’ve always worked hard to better my life and set an example for my younger generation…. But that’s just how I was raised… So many of today’s youth are so freakin lazy and don’t want to do crap, but yet still expect to have everything given to them drives me crazy….

Jesus Christ Saves Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is returning very soon, and is the reason for all of the things that are happening on the Earth right now. This planet is on borrowed time. Jesus Christ died on a cross, was buried in a tomb, and rose from the dead 3 days later, to pay for the sins of mankind, to give us eternal life and forgiveness from God. EXACTLY how to be Saved by Jesus Christ, the Son of God: 1. Confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord. 2. Believe in your heart that God has raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Biblical References: 1. Romans 5:9 2. Romans 3:23 3. Romans 6:23 4. Romans 10:9 5. Romans 10:13 6. Ephesians 2: 8 & 9 7. John 3:16 God bless you, peace be with you always. Thank you for your time.

@johnnygee5639
@johnnygee5639 3 года назад
There eggs! There eggs are the most sought after out of all the salmon that the eggs is what makes these fish so worth the effort. This year dogs (chum) went for $1.20 a lb and they average about 5-12 pounds. I read somewhere that this was about 60,000 pound set which if it was then each "bag" they filled would be about 10,000 lbs. The reason to fill the bags is because if they tried to bring them all on board at once would roll the boat and or they would come over the rails. Anyways I hope that answered some of your questions.

Hi, I'd like to inquire about the position for "stabbing the water," as seen early on and throughout the video, by multiple gentlemen. I didn't know that this particular job description existed! I'm not trying to brag here, but I'm somewhat of a pro/local celebrity at stabbing water in my home town. Everyone stops and watches me, when I stop taking my medication and I get the fits; because I stab that water so damn good! I've made the newspaper/"daily blotter" on many occasions, and every one of those times, I wasn't getting paid for it. If I was hired by your ship for that position, I'd stab that water so fucking good/hard! You'd never see anything like it!!

These are salmon. They only live about 5 years and then reproduce and die. They constantly monitor the numbers of these fish, and raise eggs in hatcheries then release them into streams. I visit a hatchery every year to check on the young ones that I will be fishing for in the following years at the end of their lives.

@donnyinalaska
@donnyinalaska 4 года назад
these are high maintenance boats... repairs on the nets, fuel costs, fishing permits, coast guard certifications, food on board, engine repairs and upgrades, radar's and other electronics, plus the high wages for those who work on the boats and run the gear. alot of these guys can only work when Fish & Game Departments say its allowed, and even then this can be only 2 or 3 openings , and depends on how many hours the opening is. there is alot that goes into this type of work ... and work it is... trust me, you would rather dig a ditch then work on these boats as a green horn...lol

These are not the salmon you buy in the store or at a restaurant. These are chum salmon being harvested right in front of the hatchery, primarily for their eggs. The flesh is pretty low quality at this point compared to ocean fish. At best they get canned or smoked, but they're never going to be found at a nice restaurant near you.

Video nicely recorded-no doubt. The title "fishing" is misleading, as I would call it simply fish harvesting. Man if we catch one Salmon here in Germany in the Rhine river of that size, we will be in the newspaper."Fishing" is with a rod and reel, net is harvesting as the fish has no chance to escape of refuse to get hooked.
