WoW! What a gigantic mess. During the last winter my wall tent fell in on itself under a ton of snow. Today is the day I fix it .....or not. Dave Whipple
Thanks Chris. The mosquitos ran me out of the tent one night and I had to sleep in the yard in a Coleman tent. The next day I fixed all the rips and sewed up the door!
@@Bushradical Been living in wall tent since mid March...guy I bought the property from had it up for 2 years...rain flys don`t seem to last very long in the high wind in the high desert. Found out that Flex Tape works good on rips but needs that Flex Spray to ensure that the edges of patches stay secured... got a video of why I am not happy on my channel...don`t seem to find too many negative vids on wall tents ...yours seems to be worse than mine but we don`t get THAT kind of snow here...
Trying to convince my husband to move off grid together so we can save $$$$ for a house/land of our own. Think I'll not show him this one 🤣 glad you got it fixed
That’s the harsh reality of the wall tent, Sorry you had to come home to that. The wall tent I’m looking at is a traditional style, with the wood ridgeline. I also plan on using it at some mountainman rendezvous. They require traditional. I’m hoping using 4x4 or 3x3’s will make it nice and strong. I can see me spending allot of time there once I build it. Man Your really living the dream, I love your outlook on life. Your a good dude! Bless you and your family.
wow... sorry about your tent! I just put up my canvas tent this weekend. It is a good reminder that they don't like the snow too much. Good job cleaning up. ;)
Hey Tambralyn- they actually do really well in the snow- but this year FBX had epic snowfall.... we have a plastic fly on this one to help shed snow, but this year was too much!
@7:20 + First guy I've seen that has obviously enough experience sweeping to do a good job quickly and easily! Sounds silly, I know, but my male family and friends are awkward, sweeping dust back up into the air and all over, missing a lot, clumsy with the dust pan, (if they even know what that is 🙄) or leave it all up to a woman. 😖 I admire this couple's cooperative work ethic sooo much, a joy for me to see! 👏👍👍🥰
Glad to see you again. I was wondering how things were going. Get your rest, eat healthy and look after yourself. Keep us posted. I'm proud of you Dave. In the nearest town, do you have a P. O. Box by chance? I told my wife I wanna send him some goodies or something. We just wanna support you in some way. -Stephen, Ohio
Thats very nice of you Stephen. Brooke is still down in Michigan until the 9th of june so as soon as she flys up, I will transfer our mailing address for the summer, but until then I can't get mail up here.
same thing happened to me but with another "hot tent" and WITH the stove on. Scared the crap out of me because it all fell apart at 4am'ish. Me and the two dogs inside. My first thought was to make sure my dogs are ok and not burned. All turned out well but really spooked me from hot tenting again bc it could have been really really bad. It's very scary to see uncontrolled embers flying around in the air in pitch darkness, in the wilderness. Be safe my friend.
Thanks. Sounds like quite a scary episode! The frame to this tent is actually really strong.....I'm 245 and I can hang from it. But I left it up over winter and it got a big snow load.
Well like the wife and Black Creek Bushcraft said, what a job and a disheartening one, but you figured out and got it back together and what a day it must have been. Thanks for filming it !
I watched the whole travel series and enjoyed it. I am super jealous of that beautiful property in Alaska. That is just plain awesome. Keep up the good work and get your self settled in. Then you can go chop some stuff with your axes! LOL! Be safe and enjoy yourself.
Hey Adam, all I have is aspen on my place ( some spruce) so there is good chopping' everywhere you turn! Don't forget to watch us on ALONE. Thanks for the comment.
awesome projects Dave...A man's gotta have a project wall tent disaster sucks though. Don you guys ever put a 2nd tarp over the canvas for added insulation when it's starts 2 get colder ?
Thank you for showing me the Carnage give me some thought for good advice.. obviously I think those pipes are a little bit too week probably have too much lead in them.. you probably could have bought yourself what are you going to use your good floor for.. and go ahead and constructed stud walls.. I thank you for giving me this consideration if I ever see myself in such a back to the wilderness situation..
Actually When we put the tent up originally ...we already owned the tent and we set it up to live in as we built a log cabin on a separate part of our property. Those videos are here to if you are interested in them.
What a life You live! When I was 10 or so what I ( or anybody I knew ) would have given to have You for a friend and mentor ! I would definitely have a lot more life skills!! But , more importantly a life long friend..
Could you tie a large canvas up above the tent at a really steep angle so the snow will slide down and away from the roof of your tent? Awesome looking spot you have there Dave. Jack Southern Ontario Canada
I see that was years ago. Glad i saw this video. I think i will purchase two poles to attach to the ridge pole. One in the front, splitting the entrance in two and one against the back wall. This should add more strength to the top ridge pole
Do you have the means to sew the tips in your tent? I dont know how to send you photos, but we used pecker poles for our tent frames. One center ridge pole and short ones on the outside that were wall height and ropes drawn back to hold them upright. Lots of snow in Idaho and never a collapse. Good look. I enjoy your videos.
Wow Dave, lots of work. Good idea on the coffee brea. Hey your intro has a pic of a modified butcher knife. I have about 12 of them and use them for everything in the bush. Do a vid on yours!
I would do a vid on the knife but I left it in Michigan. I'll have a knife review or two coming pretty soon. BTW....I did throw the coffee out that was on the floor, lol.
Dave, Years back, My family and I had taken a vacation be to Miami Florida. We had been there at my mother in laws home, we thought we could get out before the hurricane hit. I was WRONG, so we retreated back to MIL's home to ride out Hurricane Andrew. Well came thru alive, her home we as only slightly damaged just the garage roof was blown away. But the rest of Miami resembled a War zone. Total devistation everywhere. We had ridden out a few lighter strength canes over the years, Living near the Gulf of Mexico, in Northwestern Florida. They were extremely light compared to Andrew. I called my boss and took another week off from work. I m in nimially repared the garage roof, just put up two blue tarps to hold until I l her nephew could really repair the roof. The rest of time we helped my wife's sisters and brother deal with housing and went down near San Joukein to hand out food and water with the Red Cross. Stay safe out there in the woods.
Set my old wall tent one spring just to check it out. A big storm blew in and just about tore one end off. Too torn up and too old to fix so bought a new one. You had some pretty big tears in it and I'm wondering how you repaired them. I've used a product called Liquid Stitch and it's amazingly strong and withstands water etc. The catch is you have to somehow hold the two pieces together until it sets. I'm sure you got the tears repaired already but it would be serviceable to simply cut a patch to over lap a tear put the liquid on liberally, press it together, and let it dry. It's not real cheap but cheaper and easier than hauling it off to a canvas sewer.
Thanks for the info. Actually, I bought some double sided carpet tape and some new canvas to do a ll the small stuff. It worked good at first but then started coming off. Some of the other spots held well. I think next year I will sell it to some moose hunters, lol. These tents sell like free beer right before september.
Did you have a plastic tap over the outside roof? Helps the snow slide off, but too much will still cave it in. Friends lost a Indian style teepee that way once years ago.
Yeah, we do have a heavy white tarp over the tent itself. There was just a FREAK amount of snow in Fairbanks. I remember years when there never was more than a foot on the level. We got more than that in one particular night!!!
You're a beast Dave! Just watched the 6 day trip up before this video and wow,I loved it! I can't drive more than 7 to 10 hours at a time anymore and honestly I prefer 4 to 5. It would take me weeks to make that trip, but who cares eh? So dang beautiful! Glad you got your house back in order and looking good! I am living vicariously through your videos, maybe someday visit my kin in Alberta if I get radical enough. I had an escort like yours for a few years but after the second engine swap I put her in the graveyard, glad yours has done so well for you,or should I say that car's lucky you're an able mechanic. These days I like my conversion van with the 14in memory foam bed and all the comfort. I got a good laugh a few vids back on your journey about the packs of wild collies, that was hilarious! Thanks for sharing your adventures Dave,I really enjoy them and look forward to more! Still have some catching up to do. Be radical!
Sorry to see your sweet back I had collapse from the weight of the snow it how's my boat it was so bad I had to just cut it up and throw 😭 we'll get another one there handy and can be moved easy
The thing is, the poles are only a fraction of their original strength now, and prone to bend much easier when load is applied. Be sure to put in ridge supports any time you are expecting snowfall.
Worked in watershed restoration in the White mountains of California one summer in the early 1990's. We woke up to a heavy wet snow in June, high elevations, tents were squished to the ground with occupants inside. I actually returned my LLBean tent that had the poles kinked. Looks like a nice hill, how are the mosquitoes there?
Wow. Makes me feel like I got out the deal pretty easy! Smashed inside a tent. Thats a cool story. The mosquitos can be bad or not too bad but there are always a few around.
Man, what a total bummer . I bet your heart sank to the plywood floor when you saw this . Almost looks like Yogi , Boo-boo and Cindy Bear used your roof for a trampoline (;-P) . I too have a wall tent we use on northern Maine deer hunts - can't imagine coming back to camp and dealing with that ; uuugghh !! Good repair job , though . Love that portable pipe bending vice - where do they sell those , anyways ? lol .
Oh man you guys...I just saw the full cast for the show...What the...! Incredible...Bairds! Wilkes! Whipples! even Ribars! How the heck did you swing a tv show for you guys and all your friends! Wow. I can't tell you how excited I am to see ALONE on History Channel Thursday June 15th @ 10pm ET. Dancing with the stars my %#* . Take care.
I'm always amazed when I check out a friends channel and YOU have posted on their comments...I'm always thinking "who IS Brandon" and how does he know all of us? You have a knack for following certain people. LOL
I feel truly honored to have interacted and been able to enjoy content from, what I consider, a very elite group of amazing people, here on the YT. I have to admit, I am still stunned that all of my favorites are on my favorite show ever. You could say I got lucky, but I think I was naturally drawn to excellence!
Thanks for the plug! LOL. I thought from the people you follow you were about to be blown away.....or you were a total insider on all this ALONE stuff! By the way way . Shannon Bosdale Lives in wrangle ( also on season 4)
She's here. Everything is going good. I'm stoked for people like yourself who have followed some of us and now get to see the Alone series. I really couldn't wait to tell you!
I don't know what tent would survive being set up for an extended period of time when it is snowing. Every tent needs to be maintained and snow brushed off as much as needed in order to prevent this from happening.
Correct. I had a neighbor lined up to knock the snow off of it, like I had in previous years.....however Fairbanks got a HUGE , unusual dump of snow and my neighbor did not get to the tent in time.
Great job piecing it back together. Home is where you hang your tent.I know they make those off grid, satellite internet terminals, but I am sure they are spendy. Do you go in town and steal internet from the diner? TFS and be well!
Funny you should ask that question. I'm currently at the world famous Hilltop truck stop, eating pie, using free wifi and typing this to you! The library in Fairbanks has great wifi so I go there to upload videos.
I'm getting ready to set up a Wilderness tent in north Idaho where we get big snowload. I'm looking at adding additional rafters every 2' and some internal upright posts. Do you think that will be sufficient? I will be on-site everyday to address snow, but its not unheard of to get 4' over one long storm. Ty!!
ALWAYS HAVE A VERY TAUGHT , STEEP ANGLED " FLY " , ENSURE YOUR TENT SET UP IS AT LEAST 2 INCHES ABOVE NATURAL RAIN RUNOFF. a good nights sleep saved, right there. NORTHERN Labrador LIVING, best regards,
Hi Dave . I spotted you on the ALONE preview , hope you and Brooke did well on it . I'll be watching to see how you guys did . Thanks for sharing . ATB , Ken 🇨🇦 .
Good question. I have 2 small generators when I need real power, but other than that no I don't have electric. Truthfully , I don't miss it much. I would love to have internet though.
Let me know when you have dog teams that can pull you along for miles upon miles and bring you back home after a few months of trapping. It's the Labrador way, my way , I may have now second thoughts as to how " tough " it is to live in Alaska !
New bushcraft radical coffee, freshly swept off the cabin floor for a new earthy woodsy dirt taste. Specially made for the most rugged outdoorsman/woman (dont want Brook to get left out :) Coming to a backwoods store near you.... Well Dave hope you got a chuckle outta that quick lil joke. Hope the rest of your time at the property goes well for ya. I know the lil escort needs some lovin to get ya home, but after it's fixed i hope everything else will be smooth sailing for ya. Take care and see ya on the next vid.
I don't know if i AM gonna fix the escort.....I drive it every day and the stuff thats supposed to fix the head gasket has worked perfect. No problems at all. I may just run it and forget it ever had a problem.....That said I will take a can of head gasket fix with me next time I cross Canada.
You may run into radiator and heater core issues if you do. That stuff don't play favorites to pluggin stuff up. You may end up freezin your nuu nuus off, due to no heat going over the mountains. If i remember right you overheated pulling into the property. Not telling you what to do, but if you do i'll cross my fingers and toes for ya to make it home safe. Also those heads are prone to having the metal valve seats fall out on them and losing all compression in that cylinder when they over heat. So watch the temp on that thing.
Thanks for the heads up for sure. I don't know what happened when I pulled into the place , it hasn't ever got hot since???? Who knows. I may just drive a truck back next time. I hate being without my escort though...its cheap freedom.
Bushradical I've got a milsurp tent stove, and have toyed with the idea of using it within a canvas shelter. Can you recommend a source for this material? I'd be grateful for whatever advice you can give...
YES.......Any company that makes Canvas wall tents can get you a replacement "stove Jack". Its a piece of fabric with a hole through it. Davis Tent made the tent in this video. Alaska Tent and Tarp in Fairbanks could hook you up too. Also there is a tin ( two part) stove jack that you can buy....you just cut a hole in your tent and install it yourself. No tools required.
Hey,BR- since u aren't busy, can u help me Hitch up my childhood pup tent, fix my roof leak, clean my debri home, play ur guitar, sang(I no u can), fix my cars carburetor and send me some fresh pink salmon COD? If not, I'll drop back 10/ punt! Love ur videos/ Mrs Whipples.
Tom from Quebec Canada Your frame is to small put bigger polls 1x3 Heat your tent with compost Did you know that compost will go up 140 f . Wood chips or horse shit just think Put some pipes together and a fan .
Ive built and sold several houses up here over the years. I was concrete contractor for 7 years in Fairbanks. Right now I'm building a little cabin for Brooke and I ( future videos) , and the rest of the time I'm working with my good friends David Still And Jay Heath , doing concrete work. Its a Zero stress work environment as Dave owns the company and we've been great friends for 20 years. We have a great time.
Bushradical I will, just from experience carving walking sticks/ staffs my first thought was "oak would hold up Purdy damn well, better'n' metal anyhow" you're livin at the finish line I'm steering for, suburbia just don't feel right anymore. Keep up the good work brotha.
In Alaska, we have white spruce and it makes a great ridgepole for a wall tent. Stiff and strong. But hopefully I will have the cabin ready to move into first thing this spring.
Hell yeah, still when the cabins done, and the tent reinforced, could use the tent for gear/firewood. But you already know that. I gotta escape suburbia. Been away from my mountains up NH too long. I call it concrete fever. For now, till my mother's injury is all healed up bushcraft vids keep me sane. Once she's better I'll be goin big, 4+ months of wilderness solitude and meditation. Probably Maine. Hell, maybe I oughta find someone like minded that owns land up maine, just make sure I pull my own weight.
