**Sorry for gaps in audio, "royalty free music" that I actively pay the rights for apparently has an expiration date now and studios get to claim my meager income when it does**
Take a trip with me to Fairbanks #Alaska to chase the #NorthernLights, Take some cinematic landscape videos and watch breathtaking views of #Denali, the Alaska Range, The Chugach Range, and Paxson and Summit Lakes!
Can you see the Northern Lights from this part of Alaska any night of the winter? Absolutely.

It's Deep winter in Alaska, one of the coldest in years. Let's see for ourselves!
Our journey begins with flights from Seattle to Fairbanks where we could watch and photograph aurora from our Alaska Airlines flight.

In Fairbanks we watched as a shield of Aurora formed to our Northeast. Later we travel to Denali and set our sights on wonderful bed and breakfast: The Runway House. www.booking.co... Which happens to be open all winter! It's fantastic place to stay surrounded by Mountains.
Overnight, a top notch display of Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) was visible in Denali's rain shadow (Mt McKinley)
The next day, we find a view of the Denali summit, followed by lots of mountain views worthy of the best Bob Ross paintings.
That evening was snowed in, So we stayed overnight at the Totem Lodge.The next day we pulled an allnighter after another round of mountain vistas, frozen lakes and rivers, and Moose!
A bare-minimum weak aurora display still managed to fill our lenses with greens and reds for an entire evening.
And of course, Northern Lights all the way down to Seattle!

I lived up in Juneau for 10 years...When my dad built our house... my bedroom was on the top floor. The gable of the 1/2 of my ceiling was all plexiglass. I put my bed under that for the lights. Green was always, but the vivid blues were my favorite. Then add the red touches and you have purple lights dancing above you. That way I stayed warm. In the summer I’d go commercial salmon fishing with my dad. they were fewer because of cloud cover... but when it was clear, and the lights were dancing and they would dance across the water and up the side of our ship and you would feel like you were inside a kaleidoscope. The Northern lights are truly something that SHOULD be on every one’s bucket list... even if you only just see the green color. The way they move is truly an awesome site

lol. Would you be ok with me quoting this in an upcoming video? Of those 3 nights of Aurora, only the brightest ones on Day 2 would have been visible inside of fairbanks, at 2 AM--which was cloudy at the time. There's quite a few challenges to pin next to "Any night of the year" and you illustrate that for me here perfectly.

What type of lens were you using for that really wide angle shot towards the end that included the lights over the mountains? I think it was time lapse. Also, I have a very fast lens (f1.4) but have never gotten the stars with the lights as well as what you had. Would you care to share your camera settings?
@scienceoutthere
@scienceoutthere 3 года назад
That was done with a Canon 6D Mk2 (full frame). And the Sigma 20mm f1.4 Art. I think I mostly used it at f2. Stopping down a bit will prevent some stars from bloating or turning into little rainbows.

One major thing, in Alaska, the KP literally is meaningless. In Fairbanks Alaska, you only need a KP0.75. And the KP is only a conglomeration of all the data, it is NOT a guarantee to either see the Aurora, or how bright it is.

Hi, what an amazing trip and footage ! I'm from Brazil and planing to see the Aurora in Fairbanks, but my wife can only take 2 weeks off in January, do you think is a good time to see the Aurora ? Or temperatures are unbearable outdoors ? Thanks !
@scienceoutthere
@scienceoutthere 4 года назад
Victor Haddad January is a great time for Aurora as it’s generally clear and dry. But you’ll need to dress warm. Bring lots of layers and cold weather gear. Definitely Get some hand warmers. Some basic survival gear would be helpful as well. Just be mindful of the hazards of being in a cold place, during the coldest time of year, and driving to remote/dark places at night.
@victorhaddad466
@victorhaddad466 4 года назад
@@scienceoutthere Thanks a lot ! What are the items of a basic survival gear? I also heard that January is very cloudy and blocks the aurora ! Thanks again !
@scienceoutthere
@scienceoutthere 4 года назад
Victor Haddad temperature and aurora are unrelated. It’s a question of how often you’ll get clear nights and January and February offer the best chance of clear nights in Alaska. Survival gear would mean some kind of a light, something to make fire with. Hand warmers, food, a container to melt water. At bare minimum. Just think about the consequences of your rental car breaking down on some seldom travelled road with no cell phone signal and what it would take to self rescue or wait for rescue. Any amount of protection from that scenario will keep you safer.
@victorhaddad466
@victorhaddad466 4 года назад
@@scienceoutthere Thanks, Man, for your very useful tips, will take them all into account ! Also I heard the pick for the sun storms that cause the Aurora are stronger in September / October and February/ March increasing the chances to spot the Aurora. Is it true? Thanks again !
