Hi Luke . I've been using one of those over many years now. A handy tip if you have a helper come behind you lightly hammer in wedges It makes it easier on your saw , it won't bog down as much..

I'm glad you share a similar passion for chainsaws and timber work. I appreciate the effort you take, in creating these videos and sharing knowledge. I also have an 85cc chainsaw (385XP Husky) and a chainsaw mill. I did notice your saw working harder and going slower towards the end of the cut. I'm pretty sure the slab was clamping the blade towards the end. I don't go overboard with wedges. I only wedge the beginning and the middle region of the the cutting run. It helps if a second person wedges it as we cut, but I manage OK alone. It does the trick. You have done a great job around the property. Love the fencing. Despite all the pressure of running a business, at least you can relax a bit and do what you like doing on the property. That's your quality time.

Hey mate, is it beneficial to have someone throw a wedge or two in as you are cutting? Wondering if this could stop the slab from pinching the saw as much during the cut? Also how is the chain sharpened? I use the usual 30degree edge for maintenance stuff. I have heard that a 0-degree can help for slabbing but the cut will result in a rougher finish. Cheers for the video!

yeah had wedges think didn’t need them here if cutting good i’d rather just keep going every time u stop it leaves marks wen u start again . the saw bogged down a bit at the end but was cause ran into a heap of wet pitch gummed it up : ) i just use a standard chain seems to work fine : )

Gday Luke. Ideally if you’re going to do this a bit you want remove maybe three cutting teeth then leave one along the length of the chain. Can’t remember the ideal angle for sharpening when doing this. Removing the teeth saves a lot of work on the saw and keeps the chain speed up. Used to do a bit of this a fair while ago 😊

Have you thought about making up end boards for your ladder to make your first flitch cut, attach your end board that are cut out to suit the ladder, also are you using a 10 degree sharpened chain, we had 3 mills on 090 Stihl's our biggest bar was 60 inch that we had used on a Red cedar log and others. Like another comment you might want to wedge the slab/board as you cut.

yeah have done that , but being playing around with free hand slabbing too, which is much easier once u get the hang of it : ) think the chain come out of the box 10 degrees. i did have wedges cut ready to go but a short log i think doesn’t really need it : )

Wouldn't it make life easier on the saw if you knocked in some wedges down each side as you went along?

yeah i often do i had some cut just didn’t put them in this time, i think doesn’t make a lot of difference tho there is a lot of sawdust behind the cut
