Mountain Mariner Off-Grid Alaska

The beginning of my 8th year living off-grid in the mountains of interior Alaska. I worked over two weeks, which means I would only have two weeks off then back to work. Well Murphy's Law kicked in with a late crew change, then supply issues, followed by bad flying weather and mechanical issues with the Raven R44 helicopter. Had little damage from the bad wind storm we had in early January, the anemometer on my weather station couldn't keep up with the intense winds and tossed all three wind cups off. It was time to upgrade that anyway.

It's about 12 degrees F where I am and I'm waiting until Monday to walk to my mailbox. It takes a special type of person to brave those elements.

I skipped a few mundane tasks. But it takes the first day to get everything in order. Thanks for the compliment but this video was really thrown together fast, actually now that I think about it all of them have. One of these days I should slow down enough to put together a real video.

Welcome home Ed, Happy New Year. You certainly have some work ahead of you. I'm surprised your snowmachines started right up, must have some good batteries in them. I have the same washing machine you have, sure comes in handy. I am changing my L16P solar batteries out, I have 4 and I am replacing them all with one lithium ion battery, it's going to cost me $2600 but, it is well worth it. I'm still cleaning up around my place from the snow and winds. Good to see ya back. Take care my friend.
@MountainMariner

Used the washing machine tonight for the first time. Works great! Clothes are drying on my drying rack next to the woodstove now. No more washboard and galvanized tub! (Except for big blankets) I’m getting 4 BattleBorn and also 4 new silicone gel lead batteries. The silicone gel will run the show when I’m at work and the lithium when I’m home. Lithium will be inside and gel batteries outside. Two independent battery banks and chargers. Will have a wind turbine that I can switch between the two systems. Can’t rely on MPPT charge controllers when I’m away, plus the solar panels get snow on them too. Turbine will solve that problem. No shortage of wind here on the mountain.

Oh I didn’t miss much. Got hammered in Valdez Harbor with freezing salt water spray and lots of outdoor activities during the storm trying to keep the vessel ice free and machinery/pipes from freezing up.

@@MountainMariner ah the good old days, freezing spray . Just a great time for everyone involved 😀 lol, just kidding of course, that's rough conditions. I grew up commercial salmon fishing in Dillingham and have been out on the Bering Sea, I have an understanding 😅

I really enjoyed the video. That was a lot of work just getting your supplies in the cabin and getting everything running again. I wouldn't last a day up there! 😂 What was the small metal piece you removed from the wood stove? How did you get your snowmobiles up there? Looking forward to future videos.
@MountainMariner
@MountainMariner 2 года назад
Thanks! Lots of work but it keeps my old bones in shape. It’s good work, compared to the paychecks kinda work. The small metal woodstove piece is a hatch to the ash bin below. I dumped the ash bin into a orange bucket in the video. Pull that hatch, sweep the ash into the hole. Except I had some big chunks of charcoal messing up the system this time. Good catch. I should have explained that in the video. The white snowmobile was driven out here, the black one was slung load out by helicopter. (Suzuki ATV was brought out by helicopter too)

Ed, I am sure you have the electric matters in hand and likely know of Will's site at ru-vid.comvideos. Being in Nevada I am Battle Born favoring but there are lots of other options as you have to ship. Will has lots of good info on 24 and 48 volt setups. I like the SOK's, the EG's, and the AO's. Looking forward to your array build coming. Looks like you get your $$ worth from the R44 ride, not much room for PAX!!! Bob in Nevada

I watch all of Will Prowse’s videos! That guy really likes his PV systems! Engineer 775 is good too. I like to learn as much as I can about PV, it’s a rather steep learning curve when you start out. Even the professionals seem to be learning new things…

@MountainMariner
@MountainMariner 2 года назад
Well I don’t really have any neighbors. Only a vacation cabin neighbor who comes up a few times a year and a trappers cabin about a half mile away. Haven’t seen him out here in about 2 years. Both of those cabins should be ok, both are well constructed.
