I was born in Alaska and lived there until I was eight. I’ve gone back every year until 2019, and I’m finally moving home this week. I love that I’m watching this as if I’m going for the first time. I feel like the whole state has probably changed so much.

Thank you for the commentary. I’d love to see more lessons like these as they apply to houses on the market. Some examples: are there pros/cons with rooms on concrete rather than a subfloor due to seismic activity? How does the low sun angle impact heating rooms (i.e., is it ideal for certain rooms to be on the north side of the house, and why)? I’ve seen quite a few houses for sale with damage: is that commonly due to seismic activity, or more likely due to frozen pipes? Can you explain what’s common in radiant heat in many homes (hydronic vs. electric, floor only versus panels in walls, etc.)? What other factors do you recommend newcomers pay attention to in helping them find the right abode?

One month here and my list so far: 1. Specialized doctors have left in droves. 2. Native American Burroughs let go the worst offenders to Anchorage deal with. 3. “Head on a swivel” at the Shopping Malls. 4. The aurora looks like a cloud haze in the sky. (Not worth it for kids to stay up all night) 5. It seems like everyone drives a pickup truck.

Back in the 80s it was easy to make 70-80 grand a year. A person with good technical skills in the right field can easily make over 100 grand up there now.

Alaska will "pay you to live here"...if you want to be their cash cow & spend your time in jail. Taking & keeping prisoners in the system is a huge revenue stream for corrupt politicians & such. And they don't really care how they get you there. No public defender in Alaska is allowed to nor will they ever enter a not guilty plea for a client.

I have to correct a statement Jamie made about Seward and the 1964 earthquake and tsunami. He said Seward was wiped out. Seward was not wiped out. It did get damaged but not wiped out. Eighty-six houses were totally destroyed and 260 were heavily damaged. The harbor facilities were almost completely destroyed, and the entire economic base of the town was wiped out. But unlike Valdez, Seward wasn't totally wiped out. The entire town of Valdez, which experienced a tsunami caused by a submarine landslide, had to be relocated due to the resulting ground instability in the area. Anyone can get this information online. So please check your facts before posting wrong information. I was living in Anchorage when this quake hit and I've been here since that time. I've gone through all the quakes and I remember that one. It was bad.

I'm a paint and drywall specialist, how realistic is it for me to come and open a business? I know I'm just a cowpoke texan, but I'm concerned there wouldn't be much work for me. I work in 6 different cities and towns, and most of the time I don't work in the same place more than a few weeks. Do real estate companies do their own maintenance and make readies? I'm really considering moving up there, but lack of consistent work is daunting.

If you have a background in any hard skill work like that, you really wouldn't have trouble finding work from everything that I've gathered.

Why is it so uncommon for Alaskans to have A/C? Is it just do to how little they need it because it's almost always cool/cold? I ask this with the ignorance of a born and bred Floridian.
@alaska_realtor
@alaska_realtor 2 года назад
Great question, and the reason is that it's pretty chilly here most of the time and the times that it's hot are only a few weeks out of the year. So, we just save the money on the utilities and don't have AC units.
@mchobbit2951
@mchobbit2951 Год назад
Cost of living in Alaska is already pretty damn high, so it makes sense to save on AC units that would be in use for a very short time. It just doesn't get hot enough. In Alaska, you need heating a whole lot more than AC.
@jondstewart
@jondstewart 7 месяцев назад
I’ve had a portable AC unit in my house for the past five years. I kind of need it up here during some of the summer because the homes here are like heat magnets and not designed for good ventilation. 75 degrees here is NOT what it is in places like Arizona or Texas and definitely not like California. It DOES feel hotter!
@jondstewart
@jondstewart 7 месяцев назад
@@mchobbit2951 I disagree about the cost of living here being high unless you’re talking about food and utilities. Housing up here is actually quite cheap compared to most of the lower 48 states now. You can actually get a decent house for 300,000 and all over the west now and many other nice places, $300,000 won’t get you crap except maybe a mobile home or run-down fixer upper.
@jegreene2632
@jegreene2632 5 месяцев назад
one thing about Alaska is you can't just drive to the next state with $50 in your pocket and survive like the Lower 48. It's a long drive through Canada and one has to abide by their rules and laws. So google about Alaska, find out about the weather, the daylight and dark, summer and winter, jobs, medical availability, etc and realize, if you don't like it here, you can't just pack up and head out for the next state that easy. Don't come here on a fantasy and dream expecting to find gold nuggets lying on the ground for you to pick up and live off of it.

I've lived in AK collectively for about 10 years. I was able to adjust fairly quick, but I came up during the summer and could ease into it. You know, not really. Given the same circumstances, I would have done the same thing.

You need to live up here at least once in your life! A lot of people leave because of the lack of high paying professional jobs and the winters really wear on some people.

I just saw your video 15 things to know about living in Alaska. Just to let you know that someone from the Lone Star State would disagree with the comment about Alaska being the largest State. Just route smoke pipe 15 feet horizontal out window & build EXPOSED radiator shelves all walls absorb cold or heat. Use ONLY circular saw &dead branches usimg FLASH fires.
