Alaska is a beautiful state and for the few who live up here, a joy to call "home." There are negative aspects to living in Alaska, though. In this video, I breakdown the top EIGHT negative things about the Last Frontier. If these are deal breakers for you, then you might consider visiting and avoid actually moving here.

I lived in Anchorage for 12 years. I loved the long summer days. I loved eating raspberries off the bush. It is a beautiful and very green land. It gets cold and I can handle that. Summers are nice. It doesn't get scorching hot. I don't like it above 70. What I can't handle is the darkness in the winter. I walked to school in the dark and I walked home in the dark. What troubled me the most was the isolation. It is a 3 hour flight from Anchorage to Seattle. In the 12 years I lived there I got to the Lower 48 three times. I'd love to move back to Alaska and I would if I were a multi-millionaire and could afford a plane ticket several times a year but since I'm not, I live in the Lower 48, where it is almost as cold in the winter and much hotter in the summer.

I lived in Alaska for little over a year and a half (Army). I loved the interior (Delta Junction) because the summers were nice. Plenty of sun. Good temperatures. Good fishing. Lots of wild life. Winters were dark and cold. Even the locals reached out for people. Yes, the winters were rough. Lots of alcohol or pot use. The key was to still do things outdoors and visit each other. It was survival. I was never a people person but up there it was important to keep depression away. Share music, conversation, laughs, food, fun, pats on the back etc. We were all in it together.

I've lived in North Pole, AK my entire 36 years of life. And yes, I've seen the thermometer on the side of my porch colder than -60*F. And with that said, not once was school ever cancelled because of it. They made it "optional" and most of us showed up. It's called good (not cheap Amazon crap) winter gear. The only time school got cancelled was when it rained in the middle of December (enough for us to ice skate down the middle of the road) while it was close to 40*, which dropped down to -30* making the roads literally an ice rink. As a former resident (1973-1979) Delta Junction / Ft. Greely(US Army), and Fairbanks I can agree with your description about living in Alaska... -50*F not uncommon. -49*F and warmer the schools were open.. -50*F and colder they got to stay home......Actually saw -82*F(Army Cold Weather testing) and was outside in it...... Seasonal depression can be described as "Cabin Fever"... Summer times having to put tinfoil on bedroom windows because of the 24hrs sunlight trying to fool the body clock vs the wall clocks.... But during winter having trouble keeping track of time (am vs pm) because of the long periods of darkness.. And having to plug your personal vehicles into a hitching post (electrical 120 volt power) to keep vehicles power trains and batteries from freezing solid... Locals had a saying.." to hell with the lower 48.. Love it or go back".... Would love to go back for a extended visit but unless winning the lottery this will probably never happen... The entire state has changed dramaticaly since then.. Some for the best depending on who you ask.....

Even as someone who was born here, the eternal winters are rough on me. I hate the snow with a f-ing passion. I hate shoveling the driveway, I hate scraping the ice off my windshield, and I hate sharing the roads with a bunch of idiots who don't understand snow and ice make roads slick. It's like many of these people are seeing snow for the first time in their lives and have no idea that their car isn't going to brake or turn the way it does on dry roads. The darkness is also depressing. I used to work at a hospital (in the basement) and would go to work when it was dark and leave when it was dark. If i didn't take a lunch break and go outside (which was frequent) then i didn't even get to see the little bit of sun that we did get during the day. My wife jokes that I run on photosynthesis because when we travel to the South to visit family, I'm a completely different person and far more energetic. Don't get me wrong; I've had some great experiences in Alaska and I'm grateful for the time I've had here, but I'm definitely looking forward to the next chapter (which will hopefully have more sun and less snow).

As far as crime goes, I actually think that the stats make a lot of sense. Yes, Texas has a TON more crime, but there are a TON more people (29 million vs 730k). If you shrunk the population of Texas down to 730k, the number of crimes, as well as the rate would be way less. Likewise, if you multiplied Alaska's population to 29 Million, it would be the most crime-ridden state in the union (which it almost already is). As far as people being spread out, (not moving to TN bc of GA) I see that approach, but at the same time, almost all Alaskan cities have a higher than average crime rate. Hypothetically, if Anchorage's crime is gothem-like, and Fairbanks is amazing and family-friendly (which it's not lol) and someone says "I'm not moving to fairbanks because anchorage is terrible", then yes that argument stands. In this case, however, almost all of Alaska gets really cloudy, cold, and dark. I loved the video, but I dont quite agree on you're view of the crime stats. I think that they are sound and make sense. Keep up the great work!

It’s actually very important to formulate statistics using per capita rationalization. Saying Alaska is nearly twice as big as Texas does nothing to exemplify how crime is considered. The types of crime must also be acknowledged. If City 1 had a 9% per capita violent crime rate versus City 2 having a 12% per capita petty theft problem, that forms a only a partial perspective. If City 1 has a population of 78,033 and City 2 has a population of 2,356 then saying City 2 has a high crime rate distorts the importance of perspective.

So I'm not from AK but I believe crime in some of the bigger cities is above the US average, according to all the articles/videos I've read and watched. I don't think it's nearly as bad as NY or Chicago because of the high gun ownership in Alaska, Alaskans "pack heat" after all. And for coffee, I was told that Alaskans LOVE their coffee, so there are definitely coffee shops. Also, for political spectrum, its a blue state but if I recall correctly uts because the population is so low and that Juneau, the Capital is more liberal. So with the low population and capital, obviously most people likely going to be there. Otherwise, all the stuff I've seen, Alaskans are very red.

I'm from California, never going back there, we've have been here just under a year. We are moving out as soon as spring to Idaho, Montana, Texas or anywhere away from here. Your questions, Not a lot of violence, No coffee shops, if your looking for a local coffee shop to sit down and drink a cup amongst the regulars this state doesn't have that. Blue or Red, YES. There are almost as many coffee huts as there are pot shops, but you can open carry a loaded fire arm on your hip. My daughter is absolutely horrified with the all the racist slurs' used by students in Soldotna High School. The kids think their shit doesn't stink. They have an oversized ego in a small pond of schools but their sports are a joke compared to anywhere in the lower 48. What we have here is poor white trash that docent realize they are poor white trash. They are absolutely a product of their environment at home and the state they live in. She hate going to school. We are looking to ship her down to one of her sisters to live and go to school until we can make the move My wife is working at one of the local schools and is stunned at what passes as the acceptable SOP of the schools. Children are missing out on a half decent education. Labeling of special needs is handed out for convenience for a teacher to git rid of a problem. Forget a nice night out at a restaurant. The level of service and food prep is vastly lower than that of the lower 48. Bottom line the food sucks but people here don't just know any better. The State Troupers operate like a corrupt stereotypical southern county sheriffs department. They installed traffic circles here in town but I haven't seen a single driver that knows what to do with one when they approach one. For the most part they act like they're stop signs. Its absolutely comical to see four cars come to a complete stop at a traffic circle just and stare at each other trying g to figure out what to do. I've even had a Soldotna Police car nearly hit me entering the traffic circle after I'm already in it making a left turn in the circle with my blinker on. He gave me a WTH look then followed me for two miles looking to write me up for something because he must have felt emasculated. Which brings me to the local gov who thought this was a good idea to install traffic circles in a town with PWT as is predominate. Want to open a restaurant, better hope is isn't a direct competition to one owned by one of the local families that control things because it will not get approved. Basically, don't move the Kenai Peninsula. Anchorage, crime, epidemic homelessness like California. Fairbanks crime. Take a cruise but don't move here.

In the winter I'm much happier I feel free and at peace, I love snow and I hate sunlight, that's why I'd like to move to AK but a safer part of it. I've never understood people who love sun and heat bc it drains me and makes me depressed and I develop a bunch of issues with peers and myself.

My brother is a gainfully employed straight-laced mid 40'a Christian Hispanic dresses professionally casual, with his wife of 10+ happy years, both went visiting a church sister in upper Washington (From Sac. CA). After visiting her they decided to go into Canada to visit as they do this often in CA, going to national parks on the weekends to enjoy the beaten path. They're at the Canadan border and get pull for inspection. The (#$¿@&!) border guard was actually giving my bro a hard time because my brother and wife, says the border guard, were carrying too many articles of clothes in their car. In CA thw climate changes a lot if you decide to drive around from the valley to the mountains, bringing a set for cold, cool, hot, and warm climate is something most people do regardless because it can be cold at night and hot in the day. PLUS, I'm sure it's normal to bring an extra set of (at least _SOME)_ clothes with you, even if it's an extra sweater or jacket. He was also giving my brother grief about not having made reservations ANYWHERE as if it was absolute proof of nefarious plans to beging their espionage directives or something. My brother reiterated going into Canada was just spur of the moment as they were really close to the border. Being from Sacramento they decided to take advantage of the situation. But the border gurad LITERALLY kept saying over and over and over (apparently) how suspicious it was for people to come into Canada without PROOF of their itinerary, as well that carrying "too much" clothes is "not normal". Literally, he said having extra clothes was "not normal". My brother is SUPER Christian, so he absolutely practices peace and patience in the face of hostility, truthfulness in the face of authority, understanding in the face of aggresive ignorance. Me on the other hand, am a complete 180 from him. Bet bones to balls I would've absolutely suggested he use his small pea brain to activate just a few more brain cells to catch up to the rest of us in understanding carrying a second pair of clothes in your car is, in fact, quite normal. Not to mention the only people who would find not presenting an itinerary during spur of the moment trips is a sign of the person possibly being a controlling abusive spouse and that is something they should get help for. TLDR: If you knew how straight-laced my brother is, it's ashame he's the guy Canada border guard chose to suspect as a potential threat. I can't imagine the training they get to focus in on a dangerous person, vs, the person they actually let through.

Realtor does not have a second a. It's not Real-a-tor. If you're coaching, I would try to correct the pronunciation moving forward😉. Big red flag for any potential coaching clients or clients period. Gotta say the word correctly. Video was fairly informative tho. Thanks

Distance and crime. As for the distance, if you're going on vacation, either you vacation in the state, or you have to fly out. You don't have enough vacation time to drive out and back. A good thing to do once in a while is fly out, buy that vintage GTO or whatever specialty car, and drive it back. Oh yes, you better have a passport as you do have to drive through a foreign country. Crime? Yeah, it has gotten bad. I lived in Wasilla many a year and watch the dope related crime rate soar!! I have lived in Alaska from Ketchikan to North Pole, and I cannot say there isn't a town I would not return to- - -except Ketchikan. What a wet, miserable little berg!! I have over 55 years in Alaska and still think it's the best place to live.

Slugger, crime rates are generally figured per capita. 10 murders in Alaska equal a few hundred in Texas. I used to be a police/crime reporter. In Anchorage, suicide, alcoholism, family violence and premature infant death rates are higher than just about anywhere else in America. Murders, accidental death and mental illness rank near the top. Alaskans sold their souls to oil companies in 1977. I knew I needed to move on when the rest of the state was celebrating the new pipeline.I saw the current Alaska coming. You can have it.

I hear there are more sex offense crimes in alaska. Cost of living is insane. $2.00 for a can of pop in most places...gas in anchorage is 5.15 ish...wages are lower than expected. And you really should address it: the racism towards white people, as well as the amount of homelessness. Most city parks are "occupied". Hotels, either 200 a night for basic or $100 for roach motels...$250 and up for a nice hotel, but they will still have homeless people that are still on just about every street from at least mid town to down town. I'm sure the nature is nice, but anchorage as a town is a joke. I hope I never have to come back here.

I left Anchorage in 1980 at the request of my girlfriend who was going to college in Colorado. Next to marrying her in 1987, that was the best decision I ever made. She and I are now in Texas, which is really f'ing hot, but I don't feel like a big fish in a small pond like I did there. The winters are brutal and the weak summers don't cut it. Alaska is populated by a lot of people who have screwed their lives up somewhere else and bring their "issues" with them.Glad I'm gone, 43 years on.
