Guitarist Tariq Harb performs his arrangement of the wondrous "Granada" by Isaac Albéniz.
Originally written for piano, since being transcribed for guitar by Miguel Llobet, Granada has become one of the most important works of the classical guitar repertoire. It has been played and recorded by guitarists such as Julian Bream, Andrés Segovia and John Williams amongst many others. Walter Aaron Clark said: "Albéniz poured forth his emotions in works from the Romantic repertoire, and concluded with improvisations that might well have contained the thematic seeds that later sprouted into his Granada-inspired compositions."
Granada, the first movement of Albéniz's Suite Española, represents a serenade that is typical of many works by Albéniz in that it suggests, rather than quotes, rhythms and melodic elements to evoke the Spanish landscape. It was premiered by the composer on January 24, 1886.
During his career, Isaac Albéniz (1860-1909) established himself as one of Spain's foremost musicians. Through his activities as a conductor, impresario, performer and composer within Spain, as well as abroad, Albéniz not only contributed to the rebirth of Spanish nationalism, but also gained international recognition for Spanish music.
